Solas might be the *best* romance that Bioware has written Not the happiest (that would be Cullen). Not the sexiest (*definitely* Iron Bull). Not the most fun (probably Sera). But the *best-written* love story in their entire franchise. It just has so much going on, so many layers to it and is so well entertwined with the overarching narrative Once you've played Sollavellen, it's hard to imagine the story existing without their tragic love in the middle of all the chaos He comes out of his sleep, sees the world in a worse state than he found it. Walking through "a world of tranquill." It's like walking through a dark future where everything has gone wrong. His people are still enslaved; to Tevinter, to the Qun, to poverty and squalor in human cities, and still to the Evanuris through superstition and misunderstandings about their history He's ready to wipe this world away, start anew, undo all his mistakes and erase this entire horrible future that never should have existed Then he meets Levellan. A woman born in this strange world, never having seen the beauty of the past Yet despite that, displays such wisdom and grace, such purity of spirit, such strength in her convictions and moral character - if someone like this could be born in this world, then it means he was wrong. This world *does* have value, if it could produce someone like her Through Lavellan, Solas realizes that by being so fixated on the past, he completely overlooked the beauty that existed in the present But even after seeing it, he's so weighed down by the guilt of his mistakes that he can't bring himself to live that idealic life. So he'll force himself to sacrifice the first person he has ever truly loved for the sake of undoing his past mistakes, thus turning the lovers into enemies. It's such a beautiful tragedy that adds a whole new layer of drama onto the pile And now I spent so much time gushing over the Romance of the Egg that I barely have space to gush about the rest The way Trespasser brings to a close one of the main themes of the game: How institutions become corrupted The First Inquisition rose up as a force for good to restore order, but once its leader was gone it formed into the Seekers and the Templars, which went on to oppress and deceive and do anything to maintain their own power. And you see the starting blocks of that same cycle beginning with the Second Inquisition. All through the game you gain two things: Power and Influence Until you become so powerful that the world demands you be put in check, and under the control of an authority that, even if it didn't corrupt your organization in your lifetime, would doubtlesslly lead to its corruption a few generations down the line. And you get this one chance to stop that. "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain." The quote is a bit overused these days, I think, but it applies perfectly to the way powerful organizations are portrayed in this game But by disbanding the Inquisiton, Lavellan manages to do something that very few people throughout history have ever had the strength to: recognize that your purpose has passed, and step down from power It's such an amazing story, there aren't enough words to describe how well it's told

It's even greater when you consider that time-travel madness with Dorian. Seemingly just a very interesting, heartwrenching mission: The player "fixes the future" by going back to the moment when everything went wrong. Saves everyone, yet it erases a world by doing so. But as Leliana said, "It was **real**" for her, even if it felt like we simply got teleported to that bleak future and just as easily "fixed it". Solas is trying to do the exact same thing, though with no time travel. It has been millenia since Elvhenan, and he probably had a very similar feeling of complete detachment towards our world that we had to the one destroyed by the "Elder One". Erasing everything will change how the world works, yet it's the only way to save his people. Just like us. Besides, how many things in Thedas happen to have come into existence because we were separated from the Fade? The war of templars and mages didn't have to be a thing. The Chantry. The corruption of pure spirits into demons. Tranquils. Darkspawn. A lot of bad things that happen in Thedas were born out of the lack of understanding about the Fade, from the separation from it that changed natural order. Maybe we even lost an entire sixth sense (much like elves lost immortality) in the process without knowing. Something before thought essential, but now "irrelevant", no different from how Tranquils talk about emotion. If I were to wake up and realize all of those things happening around me, having the understanding of **why** they came to happen, I too would be horrified. But how does one explain to an entire world who lives blind what colour is? The immensity of what was lost for every civilization? I don't agree that the current Thedas is any less valid than his people, but if roles were reversed (and they were, in the mission above) wouldn't we be doing the exact same?

Solas’s plan makes so much more sense in context of doing In Hushed Whispers. You travel forward in time, see a terrible future that everyone else actually lived, but for you it didn’t happen. It’s not real, you can fix it. This is basically what happened to Solas when he woke up, only instead of a year having passed, it was hundreds. Just a really cool mission that adds more dimension to his character

His conversation with Varric about how the Dwarves lost themselves lends further credence to this. *Solas:* Do you ever miss life beneath the earth? The call of the Stone?” *Varric:* “Nah. Whatever the Stone - capital S - is, it was gone by the time my parents had me.” *Solas:* “But... do you miss it?” *Varric:* “How could I miss what I never had?” […] *Solas:* “How can you be happy surrendering, knowing it will all end with you? How can you not fight?” […] *Varric:* “Life goes on. It's just different than it used to be.” *Solas:* “And you have no concept of what that difference cost you.” *Varric:* “I know what it didn't cost me. I'm still here, even after all those thaigs fell.” Solas makes an excellent point about Varric. Varric truly has no concept of what the Dwarves lost because he wasn’t alive to see it. Whereas Solas was alive to see what the Elves lost. And what the Elves had to give up because of him. It’s different sort of burden, morseo than missing the world that was. Solas also carries the guilt because it was his own doing that destroyed his people.

I might be wrong about it being present here, but most people seem to forget it's heavily implied (if not openly stated) that Solas knew at least remotely what creating the Veil would do to the Elven Empire. You literally can ask him why he did that and he answers "Because every alternative was worse". He also says that the Evanuris were close to destroying the whole world. It looks like his choice was between: destroy the Empire and hope it can be rebuilt or let the whole world die. Almost like destroying the mass effect relays and all electronics Vs. just let the Reapers do their thing. Now, what I'm about to write is a heavy speculation but with a lot of hints within the DA lore. It really looks like the existential threat of the Ancient Elves was the Blight and everything Corypheus was doing with it is, again, as befitting a Tevinter magister, copied after the Ancient Elves. And that's what brought the Bligh back to Thedas: The magister's got infected in Arlathan aka.the Golden/Black City. City overtaken by Blight since before the Veil was created.

See I played as a male in my first run but I always imagined he and solas where best buds so I loved when I picked to redeem him and he just said "I would cherish the chance to be wrong once again my friend" ah I love dragon age so glad you could see the ups and downs of this one

i remember when I first played during launch, I was just confused. Then I picked up Trespasser as that released, and was more confused and angry because I hadn't replayed the story leading into Trespasser. But just replaying fully through, I love that line when you try to redeem him, the story of Inquisition is really about redemption in my eyes (and having romanced Blackwall that playthrough as well), so it just felt right. Also the music is just chef's kiss during the Solas convo.

Solas romance is good, but IMO Solas friendship is great too. My male warrior Inq has a mage sister who died in the mage's rebellion, naturally he'll grow fond of a wise and talented mage as Solas. Dorian could be the only love of his life, but Solas give him potions and tips to control the anchor so he can sleep better each night, bond with him through endless conversations about magic and fade stuff. Inq couldn't have better friend than Solas. And then he reveals himself as The Dread Wolf. When Solas says "I would cherish the chance to be wrong once again my friend", it literally stabs me in the chest. My Inq is a bit of a himbo but he has a great heart, and Solas knew too well if anyone can change his mind it's my Inq, the one who has gone through all the hardship with him.

One of the most interesting takeaways from this DLC is that the Thedas that we know of is actually not at its natural state. The actual Thedas is the Fade and Waking World merged as one. The Veil was just a spell used to separate the two from each other. Solas actually f*cked the cosmology of the Dragon Age Universe. That’s like discovering that gravity was actually an accident by an ancient alien eldritch. Everything that we would know about our world would turn upside down. Solas and his friends literally created a world-changing spell. Makes one wonder how powerful the ancient elves were, when Solas says that for Ancient Elves “Some spells took actual centuries to chant.”

Yup, that moment broke my mind. Thedas was something else entirely before it became what we know. Life endured, and adapted to the stability of the new world, but it also means that the Elves can't go back to being who they were without destroying the new world.

Honestly, I think the ending is better with an unromanced Solas because of his parting line. Instead of the kiss, you can get "You don't have to destroy this world, Solas! I'll prove it to you!" "...I would treasure the chance the wrong once again, my friend. Live well, while time remains."

got that ending too I romanced Cassandra who you get engaged to in this dlc and solas was one of my inquisitors best friends so it was still very heartbreaking. I would absolutely love to play as the inquisitor again in dreadwolf cause having the main baddie be either your love or a trusted friend is just amazing setup for drama and an overall gripping narrative. It just seems so empty playing as someone new who doesn’t even know solas personally.

Let's be fair, Lavellan who romanced Solas would figure that out as soon as she saw the fresco of Fen'harel "freeing" the slaves by removing their vallaslins. "Ar lasa mala revas", which what he says right after he removes it means "I grant you your freedom". It's all so beautifully written.

i romanced solas on my first time through, with no spoilers or hints about what was to come, in november 2014 when it first came out, and i've been waiting (patiently??? sort of!) since then! i remember in mid december i was driving into town to get some last minute christmas presents and a song came on the radio that i had put on my solavellan playlist and i had to pull over to cry! and that was just with the knowledge of the base game, not even trespasser! it's been a long.... 8??? years now.... but it's made easier when i get to see other people enter solavellan hell so... thanks for that!

I know I’m late to the party but I just found your channel and I love watching people play Dragon Age for the first time, it’s so special! For what it’s worth even though I’m normally a Cullen romancer, when I romanced Solas for the first time I had all of the same range of emotions that you did. I think even when I didn’t romance him and he just said he respects me and “would cherish the chance to be wrong my friend” I cried. I know it's been a year, and someone has probably already pointed this out if you didn't manage to catch it all yourself, but just in case: One of my favorite things is the chess game banter between Iron Bull and Solas you can get. At one point during it, Solas sacrifices his queen piece in order to achieve his victory. The foreshadowing is heartbreaking. I'm very curious about DA4 for sure.

Hmm, I never found the correlation between the chess game to his plans, only in how sneaky and ruthless, cunning he can be. But if so, then I would assume the queen was Mythal probably, not Lavellan - the chess game happens no matter of Inquisitor's race, and Fen'harel was a guardian, and good friend of Mythal - she probably was like a mentor figure to him.

Here's what I'll say for Dragon age 4, a lot of people think that the upper-management at Bioware may have been pushing for an online multiplayer game like Anthem and that has caused a lot of course corrections in development, and possibly caused some developers to leave as that is not the kind of game they want to make . However, I believe that since Anthem's release, Bioware probably decided Dragon age 4 is best left as a mostly single player game, which I, and most of the community, prefer.

Bioware aren't good with multiplayer. I think it was a concept EA introduced to them.e.g. Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, or ME Andromeda. However, in my opinion, they loose a lot of focus on single player when they work on multiplayer. So, yeah, I think Bioware should stick to single player, just the way they've been sticking to it back in their golden age.

I played this game when it was still brand spanking new- and I had no dlc - nothing - but -- I did have Solas. My first love--- and let me tell you- I've played all dragon ages. All of Origin + DLC - DA2 - now i didnt have DLC on that one but i'd seen playthroughs (sadness of xbox player, without live or anything. only learned of ultimate bundle this year actually lmao) now Fenris, he hurt my heart, but then that comeback was **mmm chef's kiss** ---- And when Solas did that to me??? --- I was so broken like WOW - ... my heart fucking HURT. and then he didn't come back. In fact he left. and i can not explain that PAIN that literally killed me - i suffered like it was me going through the heartbreak i actually COULDN'T PLAY THE GAME --- foR yeARS- ---- and when i picked it up again i was like.. I met Solas and was dead inside like "god how could you--- but i love you-" and the one that saved me??? xD .. fucking Iron bull... ... *eye waggle* literally. And then i learned of the DLC and all that went in it and im just like- I will always love Solas. I will *always* love him. He is the perfect tragic romance.

People think Solas is going to be the 'Big -Bad' of the next DA game, especially after that trailer... but I do suspect that he's going to be a 'Red-Herring' that there might be another villain (if Solas is even truly a villain) and a much bigger threat... Hmm, I wonder..? (Imagine if in a future DA game, somehow sort-of breaking the 4th wall, the actual player themselves (i.e. 'you') are revealed to be 'The Maker' & the player/you could talk (following a text-based script) to the characters in the game...

I recently just finished this game and feel like I've been missing out. This was my first introduction to Dragon Age franchise and now I'm looking to binge DA content. I'm thinking about going back and playing through the prior games also. Made a male inky, romanced Cassandra (best romance fight me), and made Leliana divine so I could stay with Cass while she focused on rebuilding the seekers. I really hope next game gives us the chance to redeem Solas. He's being a bad egg.

Thank you for this play through :) i loved your emotional reactions, i felt the same I tried romancing cullen but i could not, i was drawn to solas. after some time thinking i realise i like solas because he sees you as an equal, idk but him liking my spirit is a really deep love. its not about a man and a woman loving each other its much more than that. i hope that he doesnt "die alone" in DA:4 that would really crush my heart. and i know its most unlikely but i wish this doomed character a happy end

As always just thoroughly enjoy your playthroughs- how invested you get and how deeply you go into the mind of your characters. Truly I think it’s unique and special! Now I’m done with the BioWare games I love, I’m excited to dive into your content with unfamiliar games! Thanks for all the amazing content you provide! I think the ending shows just how unwilling some people can be to let go of the past- despite how positive progress is or how people prove that. The rebellion against Leliana’s chantry reforms, Vivienne reforming the Circle, and Solas is the culmination of that concept. Despite making friends in the Inquisition (so he says), despite coming to see the people of the world, as people (so he says), and finding a true friend and/or love in the Inquisitor (so he says) he will STILL destroy the world to put it back. It’s even more frustrating if you get the “I hope you prove me wrong my friend line”- like what the fuck else can the inquisitor do than save the world on multiple occasions? That’s why I take the stance that I don’t trust him or believe what he says - he basically sets you an impossible task. Because he never intends to change his mind. (Of course it’s still up for interpretation, these are just my feelings) There’s so much DA4 has to reveal because I think there is more to the Evanurius story than you get from him. I -really- hope for eg we get Mythal’s version (who knows though, Flemeth can be so vague)

This game is great and should have had more success than it had but unfortunately some DA fans are extremists who think that everything new is not good enough compared to the first game which is not the case. I love the story and I love the characters I hope to see some of them in the next game. I'm a bit concerned though because the game should have been out sometime ago they had even released a teaser with Solas narrating voice which looked very much like Inquisition (which was good) and then EA cancelled everything and they had to start again and we know what EA does forcing the devs to make online games or multiplayer games. I really hope they will not ruin my beloved DA.

personally I felt like if u romanced Solas you could go with him thru the eluvian like u could in Origins if u romanced Morrigan, think how awesome it would b if the Inquissitor became a boss in DA4

How can I not cry every time playing this part of the dlc when you finally meet Solas... I mean, I didn't ever romance him, but I grew to love him as a character and he was always in my party on every playthrough... There's so much grief and sadness in his voice so it hurts me physically. And this music....damn. Fucking gets me all the time. So.. lost

hey girl I don't comment regularly because I don't have time to tune in regularly but I always binge watch later and enjoyed your playtrhough so much. your investment in the story and your passion is addictive, I am glad you romanced Solas on your blind play because it gives and extra dimension to the story that is already amazing, sorry it broke your heart tho! On the good side, you wont have to wait as long as some of us have for the new game. I have a good feeling about it too and can't wait to go to Tevinter!! :)

Solas hates the Dalish because they turned him away when he tried to offer them the true elven history and culture - this is revealed in one of his dialogues that you happened to not get

he doesn't hate them, it's more like they are a grim reminder of his mistake and all the culture that he destroyed. I guess he feels pity, disgust and shame (for himself) when he sees the Dalish, they twisted the history and turned Evanuris into their good gods which is probably the harshest pain for Solas. The fact that he was rejected by them is just a cherry on top 🙄

And to think that we almost got a game without Solas romance... I have two cannons: one with Solavellan and second with Cullen, because I just cannot choose between these two. I just need two realities in whitch I will cry or cry even more 😂

I kept the Inquisition together when I romanced Solas. I had just watched the Kill Bill movies, and at the end of Part One, Uma Thurman tells one of Bill’s ex-spies, “I want Bill to know what I’m doing. I want him to *know* I want him to know.” That was my short-fuse Lavellan’s logic: she wants Solas to know exactly what she’s planning.

Trespasser was such a profound turning point in the history of Dragon Age DLC. I loved every bit of it. I am a Cullenmancer and enjoyed the romantic aspect included in Trespasser. With Dreadwolf possibly looming on the horizon I'm curious about doing a Solas romance playthrough. My Dalish Quizzy Anima would do her best to redeem Solas.

I finished DA:I recently and as a Human Inquisitor, I did not able to romance Solas but he and I have high approval. My Inquisition remains as a force since I feel it will be needed when Dreadwolf decides to strike, Cassandra is my Divine Victoria. I felt she is more fit for the role and dismantle Chantry like what Leliana does is unwise when Chantry will also be needed when Dreadwolf threat has come. In my playthrough, Leliana express her desire to work in the dark rather than leading the chantry which is why reinforce my decision to support Cassandra. We are probably in less than a year before DreadWolf release for real, I can't wait to play it because I want to see all the characters throughout the series come together against Solas! This fight will be epic without a doubt!

Josephine could, since the game will likely touch on (if not take place in) her part of the world. Cullen, well, given he can end up as a homeless lyrium addict it's less likely (and that's without getting into the fact that the voice actor went full MAGA off the deep end and burned all of his bridges with Bioware).

My cannon ending is Inquisition serving the Divine Leliana with an angry response. Greater chances vs Dread lover's armies . Unless Dread lover takes the field himself. Then the amount of Stone statues shall rise to a record high🤣 . Some of my Cannon decisions: My cannon Fade Adamant events are Grey Wardens joining the Inquisition. Hawk escapes Fade(not an easy decision). Sarcastic Female Hawk fully romanced Isabela,returning to Kirkwall to assist Varric in ruling and keeping him safe . And her Sister is Grey Warden. I fully supported Mages in all 3 games...as much as I am considering to change my Inquisition cannon to supporting Templars over Mages. Their Powers could be very,very useful. I condendemned Alexios and Livius to Tranquility. They are just way to dangerous and execution...well I don't believe in it and I try to make my cannons as close to my IRL values as possible. Fully supported Curly . I cannot decide between Male Dalish Rogue or Male Human Mage Warden-Commander and between romanced Leliana or Morrigan. EDIT: That said,the Dark Ritual was performed regardless. I spared the Architect and Messinger in my Cannon Awakening . Bhalen is Orzamar King. He is seemingly more ruthless than Harowmond,but not really as he is far more open minded. Anders is a dear friend . As is Fenris. As is Zev . Note,my memories about certain events are fuzzy at best. Oh and that Orleasan Assasins guild? They serve Lady Josephine now .

Ah, Solas... Since the beggining, i knew something was up with him. That's why i didn't really trust any explanation he gave me in Haven or Skyhold. After playing the DLC, i truly despise him. The fact that he "doesn't see us as people" reminds me so much about a "friend" who told me the same after i came out as gay to him. Probably that's the reason i can't really tolerate him... Well, that and probably the fact that he wants to commit a purge of all modern Thedas :P In any case, i really enjoy your playthrough! Keep up the good work Meg!

Apparently romancing him makes the player miss out on one of the best damn lines ever written, when they say they'll try to save him. "I would treasure the chance to be wrong once again, my friend." Much MUCH more satisfying that all that nauseating romantic mush.

I had hopes for the series, because the writer of Solas - Patrick Weekes - became the lead writer for the Dragon Age series in 2016. But now seeing the trailer... it looks so goofy. The characters feel like characters, while in the Inquisition they felt so mature and real, complex, like people. But it's only a trailer, we will see I guess. One of the most upvoted comments on the trailer say "Solas was right, it's too painful to walk in the world like this." and it made me laugh so much.

Honestly felt nothing for the romance, or most of the characters in that game. I liked Dorian, Solas felt as weirdly tainted as he was after some time(seemed great in the early to mid-game tho). None of the straight male romance options were really worth shit tbh. Cassandra was written for a lesbian/heavy duty submissive guy(not to mention how she was an absolute asshole who loves to kidnap, threaten and beat up innocent bystanders - And then keep on blaming them for getting caught in the middle of things. She's a repeat offender, and it doesn't help that she pretty self-important and stupid to boot. And yet she keeps up her attitude of "woe be me"). The ambassador was meh, distant, and not really a full on romance worthy of a Dragon Age game. The rest I would not even mention. I suppose I didn't really mind Iron Bull, but to me he was a slightly less amusing Ohgren. Don't get me started on Sera or Vivienne... The greatest points to this game were graphics, maps, and the end credits when they roll. And yes, I'm quite serious about that.
