The Intercept’s Mehdi Hasan speaks with world-renowned political dissident and linguist Noam Chomsky on the 2020 presidential election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Now that Bernie Sanders has dropped out and endorsed Biden, does the progressive left have a moral obligation to hold their noses and vote for the former vice president, despite his many sins?

Chomsky doesn't stop. At 91 he is still doing interviews and is as sharp as ever. Apparently, he is something like the 9th most quoted person in history. That is quite an achievement, esp given he is still alive and the establishment and mainstream media would prefer he was mute and clipping coupons. Noam is a rockstar.

Yeah, that among the most quoted thing is the same kind of marketing you see when they say that the New York Times called him arguably the most important intellectual. No - one writer who worked at the Times said that. The period Chomsky was quoted a lot was in the 1980's and that was not a measure of quotes worldwide but of a certain social science digest. An MIT librarian self-servingly cited that and that idea. There wouldn't even be a way to count who was most quoted across all media and in all languages although the guess that Jesus and Shakespeare are in the lead seems pretty sensible to me for Westerners. SO no, not 9th in history for Chomsky. I should also point out that being quotable may make you clever and brief and a good wordsmith but it doesn't make you correct or wise. It's precisely the kind of concision that's easily accepted that Chomsky claims to find harmful because it mostly echoes pre-existing conventional beliefs. If you say something truly radical it will be so jarring that it will take some more explaining beyond a couple of sentences >>> the establishment and mainstream media would prefer he was mute and clipping coupons. FFS, he's pushing for Biden - EXACTLY what that mainstream media wants and does itself. That's not being a dissident. >>> Noam is a rockstar. Fanboys are pathetic.

I don't know. I think his time has passed. Aging in comfort has sucked all the revolution out of him. Lots of embarrassing lib takes in this one. He naively argues that a biden presidency would stand against climate change and imperialism, when we have decades of evidence to suggest the democratic party stands would never do that. Not to mention his absolutely radioactive take on communists causing the rise of Nazism. The German communists refused to work with the social democrats in the Weimar republic because the social Democrats were arming fascists to kill the communists. It is the centrists and the so socdems that allowed the Nazis to rise to power. Embarrassing to hear such ahistorical takes from one of my heroes

@@fuzzirodekill Absolutely agree and decades of evidence specifically on Biden as well. Maybe it's a cheap shot to cite his wealth but OTOH, actual dissidents don't have $8 million dollars unless it's for being a turncoat outside their country, like Solzhenitsyn. Chomsky was only dissident on American foreign policy but is actually very conventional on domestic politics and his anti-communism is absolutely conventional and aligned with the new McCarthyite Dems in power today.

Noam Chomsky is one of my heroes. One thing I love about him is that he is able to, and insists on speaking directly about the very most dire emergencies we face both as a nation and as a planet, while at the same time doing so without getting angry or otherwise bringing his own personal feelings into the discussion. He is always measured and logical, yet what emerges is a voice not only profoundly intelligent but also infinitely compassionate. His calm in the midst of the storm is a quality we would all be blessed to emulate--not to deny the chaos, but lest we throw up our arms in panic or despair.
@bryanleggo3489
@bryanleggo3489 4 жыл бұрын
If you didn't think that reflected anger or personal feelings then you weren't paying attention. Repeated references to the malignancy isn't dispassionate objectivity. While i understand why Chomsky would have a touch of TDS, given that he's about the opposite of Trump in personalty, his arguments for supporting Biden are unsound. Citing climate change and nuclear war only shows that he doesn't know much about Biden, no matter how detestable Trump may be. Trump's less the imperial interventionist so far and yet Chomsky is manufacturing consent for warmonger Biden.

They just hail him and circlejerk how great he is. For these ppl its a sign of "intelligence" if you are 100% aligned with chomsky. They don’t dare criticize him and he is their jesus. Its just another cult of personality with him. I mean we are talking about a man that has lived through cuban commies, pol pot, the soviet union, socialist germany etc and hes still a strong believer in a central planned economy. And he himself is a harmless guy. But he is inspiring millions that are fine with using violence to achieve the horrors he thinks are right and good. He admitted himself that he was a communist ever since he was a child. And imo everything he read, he read on the basis of this ideology and made it fit his ideology

@Tom Herman "measured and logical" !? Have you listened to what he said in this interview? He argued that failing to vote for Biden means wanting to vote for "the destruction of organized life on earth" ( 8:50 ) just after he declared this election to be a "rerun" of the election leading to Hitler where Trump is analogous to literally Hitler. This is the least measured argument I can possibly imagine. Right around there he also argues that you can't argue with arithmetic and that "failure to vote for Biden in this election in a swing state amounts to voting for Trump. It takes one vote away from the opposition, it's the same as adding a vote for Trump." ( 8:36 ) Let's analyze the arithmetic then, shall we? If I neither vote Biden nor Trump, then Trump gets X amount of votes. If I do vote for Trump then he gets X+1 votes. Chomsky says failure to vote for Biden is the same as voting Trump. This would mean: X=X+1 ... (subtracts X from both sides) ... 0=1 Yeah, I don't think this argument is arithmetically correct, Mr. Chomsky. It's absurd on its face when you are a conservative listener to this interview: If you fail to vote Biden, that's the same as a vote for Trump. So if I vote Trump it's a vote for Trump, and if I don't vote Trump, it's also a vote for Trump. What?! Doesn't make any sense. Also, if I were to vote Green party (thus "fail to vote Biden"), that would not take one vote away from the opposition - the green party is an opposition party. This argument is just illogical on so many different levels. "always measured and logical" my ass. Think about his arguments instead of worshiping him as a god.

You have to be a mindwashed fool to not have learned this lesson. And you had to and have to be ignorant towards what we already knew during the enlightenment... Just read montesqieu and why we have power splits. Why owning guns is important. Why an enlightenend ppl strike fear into their government as opposed to their government striking fear into them. Hitler, stalin, pol pot, all the south american cunts, stalins successors, mao... The list goes on. Mao and stalin alone killed more than 100 million of their own ppl. Pol pot killed an unbelievable percentage of his own ppl...(not sure right now, think up to 50%) These didnt just starve. They were killed directly. I cant understand how all you guys complain how the government is owned by corporations while you are looking at those same ppl to get more power... Or atleast the institutions. As if different ppl would change this fact. Power corrupts... We know this to be true. This has been known and was a historic fact long before socialism was thought off and it became a political theory. The simple fact is that you are so naive that you think you can put someone into office, give him or her all the power and this person will take from one group and give to you. And you not only think this is just, as the corps do now, but you think that this wont end with corruption like it always did so far in history... It really is childish stupidity

He was 5 years old when Hitler took power so he's relying on historical (mis)-interpretations the same as you and I and several others here have addressed how poor his 30's Germany analog history is including how he always falsely blames the communists as a major factor. While I agree that Obama and neoliberalism led to Trump, I would say that was just because people didn't get out there and push Obama. People got complacent or were unable to play politics in a way that pressured Obama to do better. Someone like LBJ wouldn't have pushed for civil rights and the social safety net programs he pushed for without plenty of pressure. And generally progressive change has happened with more liberal presidents, as long as people pushed them. That's why it is better to have Biden to deal with than some authoritarian like Trump.

As far as that goes, even on foreign policy, Chomsky regularly uses the technique of demonizing foreign leaders and even diminishing their socialistic accomplishments. He even recently advocated keeping U.S. troops in Syria to "protect the Kurds" a classic neocon technique that Bush also used - literally the same before betraying the Kurds after they fought U.S. "enemies" as requested. You won't see the same verbiage about others as you do in his personalized attacks on "murderous Assad" and even makes facile arguments that Syrians hate Assad. Some clearly do,but as far as I can tell more support his defending against Western proxy wars and even more are just hapless victims of our machinations. A good , decent , moral and ethical human . Noam Chomsky is one of the best of us , with wisdom and intellect to match his years . Best wishes to him and his wife in these turbulent times . However , while a agree with his assessment on the perils of continued organised civil human existence , I disagree it's in the balance with the two options being put forward . We are , I fear, beyond that point , the question now is how can we best mitigate the impact of the unimaginable that's headed our way ? Can we change our societal norms , our reliance on capital , rather than human development, to curb the impact of climate change . The term " we're in it together " will never be more significant than in the years ahead !

There is no literally no reason to vote for him, since they offer nothing, and compelling reasons to vote against them, since their electoral defeat will force them left on economics. Bernie & Chomsky will want there to be a minimum wage, disease management using drugs and surgery for all (which is called health care). These are great things. But he will not talk about democracy at work, or building health into societies. These require an end to financial crony capitalism. In NZ here, we have all the things they are aspiring to, but the fundamental problems of crony capitalism are ever so present here. Obama could have made all the difference, he didn't. He was the "fracker in chief", the wall street president, presided over 7 wars, and on and on. Now we're suppose to believe and elect Biden. Enough! My spirit is broken, thank you Obama, thank you Bernie for capitulating so quickly and leveraging nothing!

Absolutely, could not have said this better myself and something Glen echoed on an episode of Red SCare last week. THe refusal of real progressives to completely disavow neoliberalism, corporatism, and it's PR demolition of the language of woke politics to destroy the working class party needs to be destroyed. I agree Trump is absolutely a threat, Unfortunately, I think like Glen, the establishment elite taking him down represent an equal existential threat. The idea that the DNC can be reformed if we just get rid of Trump is a fantasy which depends on the impossible dream that corporations will learn to stop profiting from war. It is false. When BIll ad OBama decimated the working class support of the DNC in favor of a Woke PR tinged corporatist pro-war russia conspiracy peddling force, it showed its inablity to reform. The idea of voting for the lesser of two evils is no longer going to work, only because, it isn't going to work. Trump will win against a moderate and more polarized candidate than say Tulsi, Klobuchar, or Yang. The DNC got rid of the candidates that wouldnt play ball with wall street, and they have their plan now to bring in a senile man so they can bring in whatever women of color is not principled enough to accept corporate corruption and bring back in the whole white house staff of OBama so wall street can continue to loot the treasury. We need to vote on principal or realize that a vote for Biden is a vote for Trump. Are we really going to let the establishment spin the Biden has this one nailed now that he has picked whatever token women of color he choses to represent Wall Street.

Utmost respect for Mr. Chomsky, but.... A) I don't think Biden can beat Drumpf even WITH the Bernie supporters. Like Chomsky said, half of the eligible voters don't vote so you have to have a candidate like Bernie to excite people enough to get out there and vote... but addled, senile Joe and his non-progressive, neo-liberal record won't excite anyone. Most people just will look at Joe and the DNC and know that there is nothing there for them personally. But conversely, the right wing ALWAYS vote. And... B) To use Chomsky's own words, the DNC would rather lose the election than win with Bernie. Isn't that the same thing he is telling Bernie voters not to do? And frankly, based on Joe's behavior, I don't think he cares if the Bernie supporters vote for him or if he even wins the election. I think he knows he can't win and he probably knows he is declining mentally and can't function in the office anyway.

Noam Chomsky needs to debate Ben Shaprio. I'd love Chomsky to show Shaprio where he is making mistakes.

I sent a message to several progressive and human rights about the danger of demonstrators with weapons. Noam Chomsky is the only one who responded to my email. That show how genuinely cares about the people.

I hope that Chomsky, Hasan, Akala and Lowkey can all have a discussion one day. They are the best political commentators!

@@maddman4747 I reccomend Lowkey, he is a very intuitive person being involved in activism since the Iraq War. He makes many anti war speeches and helps his community. Akala does a bit of the same but with books and music

Chomsky is a rare specimen worthy of use in the arguments of cloning. It would be worth a try, but of course someone would try to control the outcome. they always do. He teaches to think for yourself, but go as deep as thought will allow, and keep testing it.

The Capitalist class requires another world war, in order to destroy massive amounts of accumulated capital and restore the rate of profitability somewhat. This upcoming war is a necessity for the continued existence of Capitalism. Now you can choose to vote for a representative of the Capitalist class in a red or a blue colour. Voting for this system won't prevent the necessary outcome of this system
