Watching Derek play is like coming home. Reminds me of the days when I was a long haired college kid smoking up and tripping on Derek’s drum solos, his work on Black Seeds of Vengeance and some other sick stuff like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel and Obituary. Good old Tampa Bay !

Mac Drummer kinda glad too, he would do so much good for Dream Theater they would sound completely different with Derek as a drummer (in a good way), but would alienate most of the Squimish fans. Maybe i'd even like Dream theater if they'd accept him as part of the band.
@j.d.72084 жыл бұрын
He doesn't fit their style at all and was unable to play their complex odd time signatures so speed his impressive as hell but just one peice of the pie Mike the master Mangini was clearly the best
@marcofrassini91724 жыл бұрын
@@j.d.7208 I love Derek but I Kinda agree with you. Derek, thomas Lang, Mike Mangini, Virgil Donati, Marco Minneman, they all were great drummer but I think Mangini was the best choice. Don't me wrong, I think that Derek is a phenomenal drummer but I don't see his style fitting dream thetare very well, not as Mangini's. Speed and odd times are two different "difficulties" on the drum.

Not a big fan of blasters and that kind of metal. Much prefer Matt Garstka from animals or Matt halpern from Periphery and that style of groove djent metal. This blasting style definitly takes endurance and speed and takes a long long time and a lot of practice hours to get good at but this kinda drumming just doesn’t do anything for me. It’s impressive but after 10 seconds I’m sick of the same beats the entire song entire album. It’s awesome when some drummers use blasts occasionally like Alex rudinger but ALL THE TIME is just annoying to me. But anyways about the meinls, I have his serpents ride and picked out a lighter one out of the average weighted serpents ride and it’s my GO TO ride cymbal for live shows. That big bell cuts through ANYTHING and since mine is lighter I still get an amazing crashability on the edge but still retains the stick definition on the body which is the perfect ride cymbal I’ve always dreamed of having and much prefer this serpents ride over the formally known as heavy bell mb20 ride which has no crashability and too heaving sounding body stick definition with no beautiful wash under it or now it’s called the byzance heavy bell hammered ride or something but essentially it’s the same exact cymbal as the mb20 since they only kept the popular mb20 cymbals like the crashes, china, and ride I think. But for practice my favorite is the 22 inch extra dry medium ride or 22 inch sand ride, or 21 inch transition ride but those cymbals just don’t cut it for a loud rock/metal band I’m in so for shows I switch between the 22 inch traditional medium ride sometimes but mainly almost always I choose the 21 inch serpents ride. It’s so reliable and isn’t harsh and annoying to the ears like some metal/rock geared cymbals. It’s still a byzance so it has that beautiful dark undertones but man that thing has the perfect volume and sound.

This is just a tip of the iceberg of what Derek can do. blast is only one thing. He is well versed in many styles and timings.
