Derek Roddy was the first extreme metal drummer to inspire me when I bought my first kit. He really is amazing, especially how ambidextrous his playing is. His left side is stronger than my right side.

You're right, my analogy was shit. It was merely a suggestion to add a more natural feel to the snare. Good sound doesn't always mean a perfect snare hit. And I'm sure if Samus was so concerned with my comment, he would be defending himself. Even in the EDM scene, some producers implement variation in their drums.

I don't see what the problem is with triggering or sampling. The drum technique and timing are all that matter. They're both drumming out their own strokes, no 'cheating.' Perhaps the sound could be better? That's just a matter of opinion. I thought it sounded decent. Keep in mind there are no other tracks to balance against.

@@cosimofusi2562 Nechtan definitely doesn't have as much power as Samus does but with a MICed up kit it doesn't matter as much. Nechtan will always win on speed, bass patterns, and precision. Samus probably has better fills and power but not that blaring fast speed. I wrote this comment years ago so I will say that I think overall they are equal with each having their strong suits. They're both very good.

I have the same type of hair as him. when it's long that's how it looks when it moves. It's a lot heavier and thicker than it looks, so it actually reacts less but faster.

If Roddy triggers anything, it's only his bass drum. That snare, and those toms are real, which trumps the other sound. *EDIT* Listening to it, yet again, those kicks are real, too.

Everything is 'real.' Every kick and tom/snare stroke is legit. Nothing is duplicated or manufactured beyond after-effects.

Roddy does trigger his kick drums but he mics them as well. He does NOT trigger his toms at all, in fact 66Samus is the only person I've ever seen trigger their toms and I just don't get it, I know it makes it "sound" faster and snappier but that is what quick toms (short) are for.

@@richardaaron4454 I've seen sound engineers use triggers for things like noise gating. The triggers, in this case aren't being used to trigger a sample hit, as in Samus' case. It could possibly be that Roddy is using them for noise gating.

i think gojiras drummer is known for using triggers more than most if i remember correctly. this was just a lazy use of triggers there was very little variance in velocity..

I'm not so much anti-trigger....well ok I really am but I'm more anti-sounding like a Commodore 64 game. I know most all the extreme metal guys (except Paul Mazurkiewicz) use triggers but they don't all sound so squishy. A snare should sound like a rifle shot, not a damp sponge.

That's probably because Samus triggers his snare, making it sound very machine like and not too organic. I much prefer his organic snare sound, especially because he gets good power out of his snare without triggers, but we haven't heard his pure snare sound in years, I think. Unfortunate :(

Derek's kicks sound like shit........like the typewriter double kick tone that came out of Morrisound on all the death metal releases of the late 80s & early/mid 90s. His toms sound massive, but too much reverb! Not really a fan of triggered drums so much, but overall I still like Samus' drum tones, even though they are fake. Derek has always been a great player, but IMO, Samus has got Derek beat on tightness and fluidity.
