Yeah, I actually always used Bartre, and he always turned out pretty nicely. His only crippling flaw is speed, but majority of FE 7 units are so slow, its almost unnoticeable. Probably not the best idea to give him the secret book though, because it only increased his % to strike by 2%, but hey, its still an increase, I suppose

One thing to point ot about Luna; The things it is useful for, while rare, are also things that other units usually struggle with which makes Luna seem *that* much more effective. It's that situational spell, it's really good when it matters, and even though it is rare, when it matters, it makes him comparatively more useful than the other units.

I remember when I first played HHM, I was constantly trying to find ways to use Nosferatu and Luna because everybody online always talked about how broken they are, but I legitimately could never find any time where they weren't worse than Flux. For years I thought I was just missing something since people online still talked about how broken they are. Nice to know that I was right about it this entire time.

Something I think is funny about Canas is that people have made Luna out to be this great bosskilling weapon when a brave weapon + FIlia’s might does a ton more damage and basically trivializes every boss post Ch. 26. Like seriously there isn’t a single boss lategame that doesn’t go down to this (except Denning but that’s only because Nils isn’t available for that chapter, and Lloyd but he’s not even guaranteed to show up). Like tough bosses like Limstella get absolutely destroyed by this (Vaida w/ a brave lance + filia’s might literally ORKO’s her). It’s crazy how good it is and it’s crazy how people think that Luna is a superior option.

Counterpoint: Compared to Luna, Brave + Filia's Might is more expensive, must be done at close range, and requires giving up your dancer's turn before the attack is even made. It's more certain, sure, but Luna is better for a max-rankings run.

lherrebout Even with FIlia’s might Canas lacks the speed to ORKO half of them and the magic to ORKO the other half. The only boss from Kenneth/Jerme to Limstella it would work on is Sonia, every other boss isn’t killed by him. Granted, the lack of Nils means you can’t use it on that hero boss/Denning, and Lloyd’s too bulky to be 2HKO’d and too fast to be quad, but every other boss does go down to it with fairly high chance of success. Even Maxime and Linus, Maxime goes down to Harken + brave axe + filia’s might, and Linus goes down to Jaffar + brave sword + filia’s might w/ about a 50% chance of success.

Thanks again for all the great and entertaining content. All the jokes and goofing around with Mangs for POR is awesome too. Oh man..unit diversity? I stopped doing that a long time ago because of you. I only suffer in desert maps. It was kind of weird seeing my team in other games or hacks just being paladins, magic knights, wyvern knights/lords and pegasus knights. I kind of felt like my squad at times like I was Bern or Travant as a protagonist. I hate magic knights though; sages look so cool but..utility, sigh. Thanks this video really helped me unlock the full potential of my favorite FE character. Erk and Lucius are abysmal to try and train on HHM. Canas is the simplest choice to get a physic user with actual range before Pent and honestly I think he should be recommended for newcomers to HHM over any other growth magic user. He just makes so many aspects of the game so much easier.

As much as it might be a pitfall to try and cram one of every class in your roster, I feel like FE7 really does allow you to make use of all 3 basic Magic classes effectively.

After playing way, way too many playthroughs of FE7, I can say with confidence that the best magic user: Doesn't matter at all. Individual chapters may be easier or harder depending on who you choose based on weapon strengths, individual stats, etc. (or you could choose multiple mages, and cover more bases! Scary thought, I know), but the overall game doesn't really force players to use a particular unit. Play-throughs really comes down to who you want to use, just because you want to/ they match how you're currently wanting to play.

It's totally valid where you're coming from, but I must say: the context of which Luna and Nosferatu has utility are in situations that few other units are viable. For example, if I need a brave weapon or a Final Chapter god-like character to execute something Canas can do with a tome that has as much as *105* uses (since Luna can be found thrice in FE7), then I'm going to take Canas as my weapon of choice. I'm not losing funds or using a character that ultimately trivializes the storyline struggle. Sure, it's understandable to value combat throughout all chapters while not putting too much weight into the last few maps/battles. But at the same time, if you're trying to win the whole thing and/or get the best rank, you need the giant killer to execute your gameplan to its best efficiency. This is especially notable when the tougher challenges require a lot more work/funds/strategy to execute in *convincingly* winning fashion. On that note, two things I think that should be mentioned: 1) Body ring(s): While this can go for any unit, the body ring is a big help to Canas. But given the usefulness when Canas isn't weighed down, the usefulness is amplified here. For example, given a Body Ring and about two level-ups per map, Canas wouldn't be doubled by Lloyd in Four-Fanged Offense (given you go with the tougher map of the two for Chapter 24 HHM). And he's about the most-feared opponent for Canas, IMO. Also, give Canas both rings, and now Luna doesn't weigh him down at all. Obviously, this doesn't come until Chapter 31, but still. Meanwhile, I personally don't worry about Nosferatu, as it's always been hideous to use in enemy phase IMO. Too many potential uses in one turn, and it saps funds. Usually a player phase attack and switch afterwards is the best route for Nosferatu, and that is a big help with unit spaces are more limited in HHM, especially when few units are promoted. The utility of a free staff use cannot be understated. 2) Enemy Types: I don't think I'm misinforming people in saying that mages/sages are by and far the most common magic-using enemies. (And this isn't even getting into the obvious about the bosses.) And given how heavy they can hit, Canas comes in seamlessly with his res/advantage, relative to his physical allies. And even if we are to ignore magic triangles, his defense is nothing to dismiss. He's far more likely to take on a physical opponent than Erk or especially Lucius. I mean, his D is pretty much on par with Raven (without HM bonuses, I believe). It's better than Florina's. And while speed/skill obviously still play a factor, I'm feeling fine relatively speaking if Canas takes a hit. Match-ups are nearly as important as the units themselves, and Canas sees so many advantages while running into few disadvantages. I know you don't like people using personal experience in their arguments, as anecdotal evidence don't make much of a logical debate. But Canas is almost always my MVP in FE7 (either him or Marcus), and it's for reasons you mentioned, combined with the two added factors from me. Oh, and Luna. Sorry, but beating the big bad generally gets you MVP status. I never have trouble building up Canas, because he is useful in almost every chapter (sans one -- Chapter 21 -- since I never do FFO with Lloyd's map) and he is very effective in combat as long as you don't expose yourself to being doubled in enemy phase (which really shouldn't happen much in FE7 with strong tactics). Maybe I'm overlooking some things, but I feel fairly confident in considering Canas among the best units in the game (which I feel like strays from the opinions of most diehard players).

I think you're right about the Body Ring. You can think of the Body Ring is being either a bonus to speed, or a bonus to might, depending on what the unit using it was going to do. It's just a simple stat booster. However, on Canas, his heavier weapons aren't simply higher might. Luna and Nosferatu have special effects that are fairly unique. And so you're doing more than just giving him more might, you're 'unlocking' better Resistance-negation and self-healing. You could say the same for other characters, because not all weapons are simply "Heavier, but does more damage". But those other weapons have more users. Canas is a character with mediocre speed and constitution. If he can't double (or avoid being doubled) by the dark tomes, then nobody can. But you can just make sure to give the heavier weapons that do have special effects to units with tons of speed and/or high constitution already. The Body Ring is less likely to be the difference between being able to use these specialty weapons sometimes, or not at all. On the other hand, when just Flux-spamming, it would be wasted, whereas other units can enjoy the simple power boost it offers.

This series is amazing. I've always liked Canas. After watching this I gave a try at level 11 promotion after the pirate ship map. It's really nice to have a staff user who is able to take a hit and dish out damage in return. I ended up fielding him every map but the final chapter. Even when I got pent Canas stuck around because staff users are nice to have. The ideas you present end up making my entire play through noticabley easier.

I have watched this a few times and while I can agree with many points, others seem strange to me. Yes he should basically use Flux for 95% of the game but Luna is still great for taking down bosses, especially during the last chapter when otherwise you need such high strength or magic to take them down and they DON'T wait around for you at a throne. And then comparing who beats these bosses faster? Yeah maybe Hawkeye can kill off a boss quicker but you know what's even faster than that? Hawkeye and Canas together. Luna works at range, allowing a powerful unit with a powerful 1 range weapon to deal even more damage. To get those S ranked games means finishing chapters faster and Luna can possibly help do just that. Yes it is silly to use against anyone with less than 7 resistance, but then you use Flux. The other thing I don't agree with is... his battle animation. Yeah it's cool but you've seen it before and it's LONG, it's perhaps the least favorite thing about him for me, prompting me to turn off battle animations for him specifically because it drags on so much where most others are snappy.

He's going off the fact that it's an instant Game Over if your Lords die. You'll want them to be able to at least survive, though a Seraph Robe or two helps them all in this regard.

In my most recent playthrough I decided to staff spam with Canas and I have to say, his good magic stat combined with better combat than Serra make him a great staff user! I definitely plan on doing this more with other mages I already enjoy using like Lilina and Artur! Great video, Mekkah. Without it, I would not have had as much fun with Canas as I do now.

12:06 the weight of nosferatu 14 - his constitution 8 = 6, his speed 14 - the AS penalty 6 = 8, the same as his base. base canas with flux loses one AS putting his spd at 7. tl;dr early promoted canas with nosferatu is faster than base canas with flux.

ShadedHydra i think he's pretty overrated. he's useful for the first 3-4 maps of the game, but then your units start getting good (i.e. doubling and thus ORKOing) and the maps get too big for him to really contribute much.

While I may be one of the biggest Canas fans, I don't disagree with too many of your points. I usually always stick to Flux and like using Nosferatu when it comes to walling certain mages who I know can't OHKO him. Luna as well when I fight some Mage bosses as well since I did notice that 0 might. I am glad you shed light on his character in a time where every dark mage now is edgy for the sake of the edge or just trying to win you over via sex appeal. I did enjoy this video, although I do hope you do more FE7 characters soon. One character I think is underrated is Sain, especially when he has a Support with Rebecca.

I love your videos. With that aside I gotta say this one was really enjoyable. Canas is the only magic user I use during my runs of FE7 (as seldom as they are) mostly because he is ready to go. Having to invest some time into a unit is ok if the results are good. But having to train / babysit someone for ages is something I absolutely dislike to do in most FE games.

Ngl in Hectors game I think Canas is like the 3rd best magic user in Hectors game. Best is Nino. Number 2 is Lucius. If you level them up to 20 then promote them and get them to level 20 they hit the hardest. And Lucius activates his special the most of all magic users

The first point, about First Impressions being important, is definitively why I personally favor Canas. My very first playthrough of FE7 my Canas got an *amazing* lucky growth set, and ended up hard-capping every stat except Luk. I have never been able to replicate this again on subsequent playthroughs, but that first run (Eliwood Normal because first run, and promoted 20/20) he was so brokenly overpowered that I have loved him ever since, even on runs where he turned out a lot weaker due to the RNG not giving him lucky uber power growths. I know that his averages are not terribly impressive, but I still hope every game that he will somehow do this again and ascend to the godhood I know he is capable of doing because he did it once. xD

Great video, one minor nitpick is in your first couple of graphs Lucius has a yellow line that is VERY hard to see against the white background, the more orange color you use later worked much better. Keep it up I love your content!

On my first play through of FE7, I actually promoted all of my units at level 10, even Canas. Looking back on it, I was actually using some good units without knowing, mostly all of the pre promotes. Canas was pretty useful, and was perfect for fighting units with Bolting, and overall he was useful. I didn't bring him to the end game as Pent and Athos this were more viable.

I don't see what the issue is with Luna on Canas. The speed penalty is big but in my opinion that makes Canas one of the better candidates for the Body Ring. Having a Con of 10 and only taking minus 2 from Luna is a lot less impactful considering how slow enemies in FE7 are. Going from 14 speed to 12 still lets him double most enemies. With that in mind Canas now becomes a character that can spam flux and then Luna bosses and promoted magic enemies. He can even self heal with Nosferatu if he needs to, though I agree its not the best in FE7 but strategic use of it can heal him up to full freeing up a healer to heal someone else or use Barrier or any number of things. He's completely self sufficient. And as for the Body ring who else is a better candidate for it? The only classes that really want it are Peg Knights, and Myrmidons, Peg Knights are okay candidates but their speed growths are so absurdly good its often not needed. And same thing for Myrmidons even though if it wasn't you're comparing a sword locked 1 range unit to a Magic user that can counter on EP at 1 or 2 range. Even other magic classes like Monk and Mage don't really need it because Lightning and Thunder are fairly light in weight. Hell i'd even go so far as to say spending a speed wing on Canas isn't a terrible investment, you get one along with the promote item ring on the boat level.

If you're using Eliwood, he's pretty much the prime candidate for the first Body Ring, as with it and his promo bonus, he'll be able to use Javelins without a speed penalty. As his speed is likely to be suspect/borderline doubling range, this can help push him over the edge. Isadora also benefits greatly from the Body Ring, but most players don't use her past chapter 22. Lyn can use heavier bows like Long/Killer with less of a penalty, but again, most players either use her with swords or not at all. Canas only benefits from the Body Ring at all when using Luna/Nos, which is very rare, and even then it may not make a difference, he'll probably still double low speed mooks and not double fast bosses. For reference, Darin in the final chapter only has 15 AS, which means Canas will need both the Body Ring and 21 Spd to double with Luna, which he doesn't hit on average until level 20/18. Bottom line is he won't be doubling many of the mid-late game bosses, and any he does aren't that difficult to take down with other units.

In my ranked run(which I finished with 18 exp short and 5k funds short, so I'm using a backup save now trying to fix it) I only used 2 stat boosters, neither on canas (boots and body ring on fiora) Canas doubles everything with flux and doubles Nergal, morph kenneth's room with Luna anyway Body ring isn't really that necessary, gba enemies are slow, especially fe7s (nergal has like. 10 as or smth. It's rediculous)

@@BHox01 I wouldn't ever use a body ring on Eliwood. The speed penalty of a jav is very low on him, so he should double most enemies anyway, if not all. Someone like fiora needs it way more to raise her 5 con to 7 (8 post promotion). That way She loses just 3 points instead of 5, which actually makes her have a good AS stat, making her double a lot too. Other candidates would most likely be someone like farina or florina, but florina is kinda really bad. Regarding bosses being able with other characters, that's true but it's slow. On a casual run you'd not really need to get canas up there, though you can if you want to. In a ranked run Canas definitely is one of the best options for killing late game bosses with luna though

I think I ended up getting pretty lucky in my run of the game because both him and Erk ended up being very tanky and ended up one rounding everything so I could use these two and Pent to help form walls with Bosswin and Marcus

Lucius is a speed demon, and will frequently one round once he gets shine and a few levels. Add in the C staves on promotion, and he always gets easier growth for me.

I love Canas, he may drag in the beggining, doing cheap shots, but when promoted he can do much better, having staves he can heal and having more power to avoid and support, also, I like having him with Nino in Cog of Destiny and with Jaffar/Matthew promoted they can be a great moving Wall until last chapter.... I don't use Luna that often, just because of its hindrance but it's great as dmg pile or finisher
