Speedrun and LTC are the same thing, casuals DO NOT BE DECEIVED BY THE ELITESTS WHO CONTROL THE TIRE LISTS (An aside: I am credited in the FE6 speedrun route and discovered the fast enemy phase camera trick in FE10; I just never committed to speedrunning because you used to have to play on console to get on the leaderboard and that was too high of a barrier to surmount for me.)

Holy crap shoutouts to defritos for this sick video editting, and mekkah for this pitfall :O The reality is that in many ways, which this pitfall describes, they're complete opposites. 3H is a good example - LTCs want to milk as much out of monastery, lessons, goals, greenhouse, etc, as possible. Whereas speedruns want to be the worst possible teacher by killing off students, skipping birthdays, giving bad lecture answers,, and setting goals so students learn as little as possible. Also want to emphasize that anyone can speedrun - there was someone who recently came into the discord with no speedrun experience, and started routing out hard mode 3H runs, and he's been having a ton of fun with it! Which is ultimately what matters!

i always imagined the difference as so: a) a 5 turn strat that takes 2 minutes b) a 4 turn strat that takes 3 minutes the speedrunner and the LTCer would pick differently.

One of the ways that LTC playthroughs *do* exert outsize influence on tier lists is that they are among the few common reference points for discussion. If there is a Fire Emblem playthrough that (1) is documented on video; (2) is played on the game's highest difficulty; and (3) is "serious," in the sense that the player is constantly trying to execute advanced tactics (and not, say, entertaining their audience with funny moves or trying to use all the characters whose personalities they like); then it's probably an LTC (or else a 0% growths run, or both). In the typical tier list discussions, most participants understand that their own personal experience isn't necessarily representative of a given unit's performance. But then you can point to someone else's video and say something like, "Look, this isn't my personal experience-in this challenge run, Unit A can pull off Tactic X, and that's why they're better than Unit B, who can't do that same tactic." So challenge runs become authoritative sources. As you describe in this video, these challenge runs are planned out very thoroughly. The particular strategies that end up being used in someone's run aren't necessarily the only ones that work. Perhaps your plan requires Unit A to do X, but if you had adopted an entirely different plan, then Unit B would have an important part to play and Unit A would be useless. People tend to forget that, and they assume that the tactic they saw in a cool challenge run video is the best or the only approach. And they also forget that the decisions you make in an LTC or a 0% run often make very little sense outside that context. Sometimes you spend a lot of resources to shave just one turn, when you could otherwise save those resources and spread them around your army in a more advantageous way.

It's the best class but the only problem is most units can't do a stabby magic build, Byleth and Death Knight can but their personal classes are pretty much better in all situations except for one. Everyone else sucks at dealing either magic or physical damage. The only character with at least a 45% growth in both stats is El.

I think the funniest example to me of how LTC contributions don't necessarily correlate to tiering is an LTC of FE6 that made use of a weird exploit. See, in that game, if a unit carrying another unit dies, then they'll drop the unit they were carrying... and if the drop happened on your turn, then the dropped unit can still move. Even if they already moved that turn. So you can rescue-chain Roy, then have his carrier suicide on an enemy, and then have Roy seize. It's the dumbest strategy that has ever existed; a maniacal relay race that tends to end with a base-level archer plinking a lategame boss and dying on the counter. It also technically meant that the base-level archer saved a few turns.

I feel ltcs still have a lot of influence on teir list. Much more so when we get a heavily experienced person doing it since personal experience is much of it, it really does boil down to much of the conversation that the jagen, warpers and flyers the best units to save turns end up being very high. Despite jagen abuse usually ending up the most boring way to play for most of the casual fan base. Becouse it also certainly about reliability but in a skewed way, in mekahs fe8 tier list review moulder and the other warpers were intended to hog the dancer for the most part, which just isn't somthing most people will do. Plus the favoritism argument is rather backwards, where favorite a bad unit with all the upgrades is a bad idea, vs giving it all to your jagen is considered a good thing all becouse of ltcs and turn counts. Which again isn't all that fun for most people. It's still while likely a fact those units are the best in those contexts the bias towards them makes rhe rich get richer and honestly not a lot of the fun to be had gets included. Every iron man will go out of its way to inefficient becouse its just more fun to play that way. In a way teir list and ltc have mathed the fun away for much of fire emblem especially when certain games have major flaws. (Any game where you can freely reclass is just copy past the best unit)

I feel like this video is not only important for the Fire Emblem community, but for gaming in general, as there is a need to normalize the concept that what is important when playing a video game is having fun. Do you enjoy being competitive and strive for the lowest time possible? That is cool, and you should go for it. Do you enjoy a game more when you feel you can backtrack on your mistakes thanks to save states? That is fine too. Do you like a unit that is generally considered bad for an optimal playthrough? Good! Do not feel bad about yourself. In the end the best unit is the one that makes you enjoy the game the most, be it Seth or Amelia. In the end, the only important thing is that you enjoyed the time you spent on a game, nothing more, nothing less.

Casuals who turtle or grind or whatever retarded thing you can think of shouldn't just jump into serious discussion thinking they are privileged, and then get argued, subsequently destroyed, and finally cry for a long time to come when they bring everything upon themselves This applies to anything, really. Competitive or high tier discussion are called these for reasons. If a child's IQ is clearly not enough, they shouldn't bother.

The video editing is amazing here, DeFritos did a great job! The intro was hilarious. Getting into draft racing for the first time was honestly overwhelming at first, but the outpouring of advice from people like you, dondon, castle and others was super encouraging and makes me want to keep at it. Definitely a solid point for both the speedrun and LTCing community being welcoming and helpful. And LTCing is really interesting too although I haven't dipped too much into it, but it is fascinating just how each LTC run is unique in its own way - makes them really fun to watch.

You get nothing for LTC's in fire emblem so there is no point in trying to get the lowest turn possible every time. Some maps it's worth it, and it can be satisfying. Some maps like thracia ch 22 are much less frustrating on the player. But for every map? Just to do something that isn't worth the effort? Yeah no thanks.

You know, you’d think that this wouldn’t be a good subject for pitfalls since most people don’t do it. But I think just the concept itself is very misrepresented. For context I was arguing with someone who thought Shinon was S tier in fe10, and he kept calling me a speedrunner elitist because I brought up strong 1-2 range and movement. Then it sorta dawned on me how little some people know about speed runs and ltcs. Nice job Mekkah

"LTCers control tier lists" contains within it an assumption that tier lists can be controlled, as if there's some kind of tier list supreme court that judges all tier lists and bans all of those they deem unworthy. Imagine such a powerful body existing within such a niche community. If such a body does exist, I've seen quite a few tier lists that I would like to send to them for review. Secondly, I'm about as casual of an FE player as you can get and an easy mode evangelist, but I still find LTCing to be interesting and fun. Coming up with an LTC strat on your own, without any help from anyone, is the greatest feeling. I recommend to anyone to take your favorite FE game and try to LTC at least one or two of the maps in it and see how you do. Even on casual playthroughs a little bit of LTC can be very satisfying. The best is when you've been slogging through a map you hate and you figure out a way to do it that bypasses all the annoying stuff. In short, LTCing isn't just for elitists. It's for the little people like me, too.

They do control tier lists, because the rules of tiering are tailored around them. It is very noticeable because in similar games tier list are built on a different approach entirely. The general RPG tier list for SOV for example would give a lot of importance on whatever a unit can be used in Thabes or not, because JRPG players works on the assumption that Post-Game superbosses are the hardest content and therefore the one you have to prepare for. On the other hand, Thabes is not a concern at all in FE-style tiering, because those have consciously decided to ignore post-game, wich tbf is either not a thing or a joke in most FE games. A similar argument can be made about Awakening and Apotheosys, with the obvious example being the child units. Pokemon for example has a wide variety of different tiering systems. A pokemon that is amazing in VGC may be not as good in a nuzlelocke because of bad Gyms matchups or unaviable moves, and may be not used in Smogon OU because it shine in doubles. But if Smogon was the one and only tiering system used such things won't be understood.

I've seen FFX tier lists that put Auron at the top because of his strong presence throughtout the game and on no sphere grid while I've also seen lists put him in low tier because his ultimate weapon sucks for superbosses. Darkest dungeon(Not technically a JRPG but close enough) tier lists tend to put more focus on hallway fights than random encounters, I've never seen a list that focuses purely on how well characters do at endgame. FFV you'll get freelancer top tier list sometimes but others will put Samurai at the top since he melts the maingame even if he's almost junk against Omega. It really just depends on whose making it and what they are rating based on, there is no standard. JRPG tier lists aren't very popular to make though cause a lot of them have a low character roster.

One of my fondest memories in FE was during my first draft race when I was doing so bad that dondon started tutoring me mid-race. People like him, Castle, and others have taught me a lot and I really enjoy learning from them. My times have improved a lot over the course of a few races. A few weeks ago, some of us in Castle's community did an FE7 randomized draft race that was a lot of fun because it turned the meta upside down (Florina and Heath were bad, Serra good, etc). It was a fun way to spice up draft racing.

This is a great video and love the editing and the thumbnail. If you ever make another video on this topic, I'd love to hear your thoughts regarding what is considered a reliable LTC run in regards to RNG manipulation. This topic is probably a minefield to tackle, but I've been curious on this topic even though I know in the end it's essentially a subjective choice based on the specific rules that the player chose before starting the run.

IN the LTC community we have a metric called ETC kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5iqqJ-riblpbaM a few people like myself are making runs using this metric. However I think it's a super jank metric because #1 the biggest turn loss is that 5% of the time attacks with a 95% chance ot hit miss. Causing many turn losses. #2 Basically any chance of death is unacceptable, a run with a 10% COD on turn 4 and 90% of the time victory on turn 4 is much worse than a run with 0% chance of death on turn 4 but only a 30% chance to win on turn 4 and a 70% chance to win on turn 5. #3 In games like echoes/3 houses divine pulse rigging becomes super degenerate very quickly

If I had to choose between LTC and speedrunning I would choose LTC because it's working better with the strategy aspect. You can actually take your time instead of memorizing all that stuff and staring at a black screen for half of the run.

"staring at a black screen for half of the run" is an extremely exaggerated issue - it only applies to DS/3DS runs and onward ,and even then, FE12/conquest/revelation/3H speedruns are very player phase heavy so 80% of the time you're not missing anything behind the black screen. ...it's very true for birthright though lol

This is for speedruns in general. The absolute bane of my existence is the Castlevania harmony of dissonance maxim TAS. Under 30 seconds of actual gameplay and skipping everything for a time that real people will never achieve, and skipping an entire game just for some stupid number. If you're going through all that effort for a stupid less than 1 minute timeframe, then imagine what you could do if you tried to live a life or accomplish a real goal.

I think the one thing that's makes me hesitant to attempt LTCing is the thought of getting fairly far in and finding out I messed up with a stat threshold I needed to meet or something. Though I am tempted to try it for FE6 or something.

I think you just have to go with what Mekkah says in the video: don't expect to get the lowest possible turn count on your first (or even second or third) attempt(s). If you miss a stat benchmark that you didn't know you needed to hit, that sucks, but you'll probably only lose a turn or two to it, and you'll know for next time. I missed a clean ORKO threshold in my TRS LTC because I forgot to check a boss's stats beforehand (and the worst part is that I could've met the threshold by sending a different weapon along), so I had to find an alternative strategy (rigging a 4% true critical...), but that was for a playthrough that I was recording. Otherwise, I would've just accepted the turn loss and moved on.

While I still think terms like "objectively better" are problematic (because the real objective is that highly subjective thing we call "fun"), you succinctly express the need for some non-subjective metric of evaluation. Man I love Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles music - I played that game so much when I was younger Also great vid! I've always had a huge appreciation for what I think of as "non-standard" modes of play for games. For me, the fact that standard speedruns rely on execution is a problem, because I don't have great coordination, so I prefer to play strategy games (like FE) with other challenges or restrictions in place (Ironmans, LTCs, nuzlockes, using low-tiers, etc), just to see if I can keep up with the extra difficulty I can definitely see the appeal of trying to perfect your play, especially in a game you love, so however you like your games - keep playing and having fun, and good luck!

Another thing about new players getting into speedruns(and this probably goes for LTC, as well, but I'm not even using FE Speedrunning experience for this, so...): Even if you're unlikely to get a record any time soon when starting speedrunning a new game, that doesn't mean you won't contribute. I haven't even actually started *running* OoT 3D yet, I'm still routing the child section for Low% no Wrong Warp, and I ended up discovering something that shaved I think like 10-15 seconds off the any% world record, RTSC. (Well, apparently rediscovering, somebody in the OoT3D discord mentioned they found it in like 2013 but had forgotten about it since it didn't seem useful at the time) The more brains there are working at something, the faster things get discovered. Just because you can't nab a record doesn't mean you can't help the people who will, and seeing people use a thing you found in a World Record speedrun is itself pretty freakin' satisfying.

I've lost count of the number of people who come in the discord, get sad that they can't get world record, then don't bother - or, come in, ask for someone to route something for them, then when I encourage them to try it themselves, they leave. The collaborative aspect of speedrunning is an aspect that people really neglect, and it's always really disappointing to see that ignored when it's the reason why speedruns are the way they are. And obviously I don't LTC at all and don't really interact much with the LTC community, but I know that the LTC meta is hugely a collaborate effort as well.

Though, I am yet to finish creating a completed route I wrote down for any one game. I tend to use a Pencil and Notebook to write things down.

Originally, I was interested in learning to play LTCs and Speedruns, but I always had the idea that I have to beat the record to be able to enjoy the runs. I also thought I had to be a pro at FE LTCing and Speedrunning hence I never join any draft races. Idk if I'll still be interested in taking on these challenges, at least for FE, but maybe someday. At the very least, speedrunning looks fun to do, especially with having other people to do it with

Lol, last pitfall video was 10 years ago already? Now I feel old... Never been into speed running, but LTC can be really fun. Worst part is the amount of reset for level ups. No fan of 100% runs, though I do understand the concept. One of the reasons I love awakening, really gentle on the rigging parts, as base growths are natural high(ish)

You mentioned FE8 as an example of an way to enter LTC for fun, but if someone wanted to put on an extra pair of training wheels, they could try FE7 with that perfect luck patch you show-cased a while back on some random Biggest Tier List video. This delves into a run that's completely theoretical, but it could be fun to try out for anyone. The number of chapters with turn floors in FE7 (13x, 15, 26, etc.) also makes investing into specific units easier. It's something I'm considering for myself, and I've never done a full LTC before.

Dondons most viewed Ltc video is part 1 of his fe 6 0% growth playthrough with 29.615 views (I didn’t take the introduction into account because it isn’t an ltc). However there is a person that has more views on an ltc video. He is called „Mekkah“ and has 30.202 views on his blue lions maddening ltc part 1 video. So yeah actually Mekkah is the most well known Ltcer.

6:19 Single segment LTC's should be a thing, call it "ironman LTC" since all LTC categories are arbitrary anyway. You could easily plan a run from start to finish, and finish it in 1 segment, sure it wouldn't have much rigging at all and the reliability requirements would be very high, but I bet the runs would be interesting. 17:06 Est is super good IDK what you're talking about, she's easily better than Nomah/Conrad/Valbar/jesse/Sonya/Atlas. Swap 7 move the ability to throw a saunion, Flight triangle attacks and door opening. Man such a good unit.

Honestly, I think the biggest thing is thinking that speedrunning/LTC is the "intended" way to play. I don't personally find any enjoyment playing the game either way and just enjoy developing units and clearing the map.

The only LTC I've done is on SoV and only to try and get the trophy... hardly an impressive LTC but I still did well enough to get the trophy and it was fun. Having no turns to grind units made me use some that I never did on my first playthrough. Mycen went from a joke on my first playthrough to amazing in an LTC.

I wonder if you could stratify tier lists across Speedrunning, LTCing, casual play, ranked runs, etc.. E.g., Serra might be S tier for a ranked run but D tier for LTC.

I think in games that have those, rankings should be the most important meters. At the end of the day every parameter is arbitrary, so i'd rather use the arbitrary parameter chosen by the devs.

@@noukan42 Developer choice is really not a strong argument, the devs basically never know a game as well as the community does because they just make it and be sure it works, the players actually figure out what you can do with it. And the FE7 ranking system in particular is just a mess, they didn't even implement it properly for HHM and it has some baffling decisions (the gems whose description flat out tells you to sell them should never be sold or you're a shit tactician, really game?)

You never need to record anything to speedrun - only submit to leaderboards in most cases. Which, really, isn't even a requirement to enjoy speedrunning - it's another misconception where people think you have to submit to leaderboards to speedrun in the first place. Yes, competition is nice, but it is never a strict barrier to trying out speedrunning Heck, I strongly encourage people to try speedrunning without any capture at all, because if you get a capture first then try speedrunning and end up not enjoying it, you basically just wasted your money.

I would say that LTC is a specific category of speedrun where the specific unit of time being optimised is turns rather than real-time, the same way that a 100% speedrun is optimising for a specific end goal rather than the fastest possible run.

Not really, they have nothing to do with each other. LTCs are usually done in a segmented fashion, don't really have their own leaderboards, and set their own restrictions based on their personal preferences, none of which apply to speedruns

ltcs are more like routing low % speedruns except with turns instead of item % except we all just do the theory and demonstrate it works instead of the speedrun bit because most of us don't want to grind execution lol

Ive mostly played FE8 but have 1 run on Awakening and a little experience with Fates. Im very much a casual, not looking up unit growth rates etc. Typically I struggle to even get an time limited bonus objectives set by the game, so seeing LTC is like a completely different game to me. Ive never even used a Warp staff.

I've been working on the same thing actually, thought it was the best way to start Were you able to find a 2-turn for Chapter 8 that didnt involve lucius dodging a buuuunch of stuff on the bridge on turn 1 enemy phase? My current strategy is dropping him with florina and praying for multiple sub 50% dodges, but something more reliable would be cooler

@@fumito5836 sub 50% dodging is pretty reliable for 0% growths standards. Vest clear I ever got for 2 turn was just placing Lucius on the forest above the double bridge.

Having more mobility is just better in general even putting aside the fact that it can help clear chapters faster. Since they give the player more options to work with. So regardless if you put any stock in ltc or not mobility is still really nice to have. Thats why I dont really get this idea of using how fast you can complete chapters with this unit as a measurement of how good they are. I more so look at things like "What options does this unit provide me and how many situations can they be useful in and how useful are they in said situations".

Yeah, even playing casually and rarely getting my chapter count below 15, theres not uncommonly been situations when a characters movement has been only just too short for them to reach an enemy I want to kill on player phase, resulting in them still being alive on enemy phase to target a unit who cant handle them as reliably, just to give one example.
