Hey everyone! Today we're looking at a map of the Benelux states, that is Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, and I'll be reading the names of the different places to you in French, Dutch, and German.
Thank you all so much for your support and your patience this week. Love you! ❤

Best ASMR, hands down - too many people don't understand that ASMR is way more than tapping and soft spoken...

It is soooo weirdly satisfying when a youtuber correctly pronounces Dutch place names :D

Your french pronunciation is absolutely ‘fantastique’! 👏🏻 So is your Flemish/Dutch (making the difference ‘cause there are much similar sounds but also many different ones) Greetz from Belgium 🇧🇪

I had never heard the term Benelux before. I always learn new things from your videos! My daughter is going to Belgium and the Netherlands in April. It was fun to watch this and see where she will be going.

Thank you! And that's a relief to hear haha, I feel like Dutch has this really specific sound that I don't find very easy to imitate.

It's not easy, but you really have a talent for Dutch. You even got the hard G's and 'ij' sounds correctIy. I had a laugh when you said you should spend a long holiday to get a feel for the Dutch language. The area you were tracing is Zeeland, which is very popular with German tourists. So popular in fact, that most hotels and restaurants will assume you're German (or a German speaker in your case) and don't even bother with Dutch when you sit down at a table. So don't go there if you want to learn Dutch ;)

Admittedly, a lot of ASMR can be an acquired taste 😅 I'm very happy you enjoyed this one! And thank you for mentioning Walloon. I didn't really have time to read up on it back when I was preparing this video, but what a fascinating language!

17:50 It's because you cross the Uerdinger Linie around there ^^. Many of those towns also have a history connected to the Netherlands. They were part of Guelders and also partially exposed to early Dutch standardization (in written texts like the local administration).

18:22 The pronunciation of "ng" in Dutch is identical to its pronunciation in German. The "g" is not a fricative when it is preceded by an "n".

Compared to German, the Dutch "u" is similar (if not identical) to German "oe" (e.g. in "Goethe"), and the Dutch "oe" is identical to German "u"

There is a mistake on the map. The correct name of the French city is Armentières, not Armentiéres...

Leeuwarden is the capital of the province Friesland and Frisian is considered a language. There has been a professor who stated that English derives from Frisian:) In the early Middle Ages Frisia was very powerful and important. And Dutch is very similar to German so I think it won't be a problem for you to learn it quickly😉Grüße aus Haarlem

Dutch sounds so cute! If I had some more time, I'd love to learn it - or learn a little about the related Low German. It's funny just how different it is from my native Upper German dialect - I don't think I would be able to understand it, but Dutch and German dialect speakers living along the common border probably wouldn't have a problem.

@@Ineke1466 Yeah I remember watching sports commentary and it was a strange mix of being able to follow along sometimes and then not getting anything at all again haha. I can imagine that just being more familiar with how Dutch pronounciation varies from German would already help a lot.
