I visited Prague for the first time in 2018. Such a beautiful city! The huge radio tower has a one-room hotel in it as well as a restaurant and an observation room with a gorgeous view. I loved the city so much and want to go back. I lived in Germany near the Czek border in the 80s and it was forbidden territory. So nice to be able to visit now and experience this lively city. Thank you for the video.

Interesting to hear your local perspectives of your northern neighbour. I found Czech as a magical place - especially upon first arrival in Prague. The vibes of the whole Central Europe seem to resonate out of there is how it felt to me. Probably because of those gothic style buildings with their tower lines and all these diverse statues and sculptures everywhere. Vienna has these old vibes about it as well but differs in being much more baroque. My elderly Austrian friend used to say "Prague Darling - you must go to Prague to capture the atmosphere of old Europe". I had only been to Vienna at that time and was raving about it and got the impression from her was Prague was on another level. I remembered this as I first walked across a very foggy early morning Charles bridge on my way to Prague castle for the first time. This is truly magical - interesting what you were saying about alchemy as it certainly seems to emanate powerfully here. Great to hear your perspectives. Love the old hardbound book from the fifties. You are very lucky to live in this part of the world IMO . Thank You for presenting it in your relaxing style - so good. 🙏😊

As a Czech interested in history: that's basically because Prague was the centre of the region in the Middle Ages (specifically during the reign of Charles IV the Holy Roman Emperor) whereas by the Baroque age the centre of power had shifted to Vienna. So Vienna got rebuilt in the later centuries much more than Prague. Czechs at the time definitely would not have thought it, but we actually got lucky in that regard!

The 50s guide book is a posh hardcover with lots of text to read, maybe as a substitute to a gentleman's morning newspaper. I imagine an 1880s guide book would have been a leather-bound tome, of an appropriate size to be carried around by just one servant of an average build.

Those palaces are usually called after the noble families that built them. Members of those families are still alive, most notable our former foreign minister and senator Karel Schwarzenberg, the current head of the house of Schwarzenberg, or senator Tomáš Czernin of the house of Czernin/Černín.

The Czech Republic is a very interesting country, especially during its time in the Holy Roman Empire and the reformation. Its highest mountain, Śnieżka, means 'snowball' or 'Snow White' (the princess) in Polish, so I guess it's the same in Czech ;) But I had no idea that Katowice used to be called Stalinogród. I googled it and it was only the case in 1953-1956, fortunately.
@MelangeASMR Жыл бұрын
What a cute name! In German, it's dry and descriptive, it just means "snow crest" haha
@beth12svist Жыл бұрын
Czechs tend to translate Sněžka into English as a much drier "Snow Mountain" (although we don't have "mountain" in there, what with Czech being a flexive language not given much to compound words). Snow White as in the fairy tale character is Sněhurka in Czech. 🙂
