Melanie's explanation to her EP songs: 💗Test me is a song about accepting the challenges of life as tests from the universe that build strength and wisdom. It is also about understanding that your experiences in life/school teach you more than the actual classes themself. (Strength Energy) 💗Brain & Heart is about the importance of being balanced in your decision making. Using an equal amount of logic & emotion. (Temperance Energy) 💗Numbers is about feeling underpaid and overworked In a system that treats you like you’re disposable. (10 of wands Energy) 💗Glued is about attachment/detachment. When you’re completely attached you have the potential to get hurt but you are able to feel the depth of love. When you’re detached you save yourself from potential hurt but never get to feel that level of love. (Devil/Lovers Energy) 💗Field Trip is a more personal song about some of the intricacies of who I am as a human. Being an empath, a life path 11 (bridge between the divine and the material) The duality of my Triple Taurus and triple Scorpio placements. The contrast between what my mother was going to name me when I was in the womb ( katarina- pure light) and what she ended up naming me the minute I was born (Melanie - darkness) and also a reminder that whatever imaginary box people put me in I will always find a way out. (Empress Energy) 💗The Bakery is a song about unenthusiastically working at a bakery in high school because I needed to make money to invest into my art and my music. (8 of pentacles Energy)

@gwyn48574 жыл бұрын
RodriVlogs that’s ok! Everybody has their own opinions. I personally love the EP and others might prefer her other work. But don’t worry, this was just the “intermission” between K-12 and her next Crybaby album. This was just an EP for her to create something personal to her life, especially with covid and everything it would’ve been hard to create a k-12 part two anyways.

i think like this EP is kinda confusing cuz we are used to listen music of Melanie as a Cry Baby like a character she made but Cry Baby and K-12 (at least in my opinion) is that what we hear in those albums , Cry Baby a character but is not Mel (in my opinion) And in this EP she is Melanie Martinez with her feelings and her sounds her voice and that is what i think like why is this EP so "weird" or like not what we are used to hear of her. Cuz in K-12 and Cry baby we were hearing to Cry Baby's thoughts and feelings and sounds and experiences and in After School we are hearing Melanie as Melanie.
@rome_lbbh63463 жыл бұрын
I think that's the point of this ep. To see and learn more about melanie instead of crybaby and their always been a pattern that ep and single aren't connected to the storyline
@lilibeth20043 жыл бұрын
I think I’m this EP instead she wanted us to hear more of her instead “crybaby” I would understand she’s coming from because after her break up I think she wanted time to write and feel herself she wanted us to hear her instead of crybaby even though crybaby is in this ep crybaby is Melanie so this album is amazing

I noticed that she was experimenting with samples and personal, more emotional lyrics. She's also grown so much as an artist, that's she's able to experiment vocally without losing her particular style. Even though it's an extension to K-12, this doesn't really sound like anything she's done in her other albums, and I'm here for it!
@nurazani47194 жыл бұрын
I agree. I can tell that she is experimenting with different styles. Some work better than others but I admire how bold she is to not just try new styles but also to present it to us as her fans. I hope she will continue making wonderful music

exactly! I’m so glad more people are noticing that instead of just saying “no i don’t like it bc it’s not like k-12 and crybaby”. Some people just don’t understand, but i think the EP is amazing and she did a great job.
@elisakrivas4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think what it is is that the EP isn't like her old stuff, which means to old fans, it's a new taste to aquire for the ear. I actually enjoyed it. It was very different from her older stuff and it was unexpected to me, but the EP does sound the same throughout the EP album itself, unfortunately. It was like the first song was like, "Wow, Melanie!" Then after that, I was like, "Okay, but now, which one is which?" I've listened to it a whole lot more times on repeat, though, and I definitely love it now. I can't deny she has a new style, though. I don't know how people can call this the same. Listen to Intervals, A Million Men, Dollhouse, Playdate, Gingerbread Man, Piggy Back, Strawberry Shortcake, Fire Drill and Numbers. The progression is obvious in each of these.

The reason why melanie's song sound the same is because they are being produced by micheal keenan, the producer who produced all the k-12 songs exept for drama club(one love and kenetics), I mean they sound good but that's why I prefer the crybaby album, because there was a variety of producers, it's like chocolate, yes i love chocolate but when I'm only eating chocolate, it kinda taste repetative, that's why the bakery was a stand out is because it's being produced by another producer, anyways love the EP nether the less

12:50 It's because this EP is more about her and not crybaby, that's why the song don't really "stick". The reason they don't feel like....Melanie? is because she made this EP different so that people see her more and not just "the lady that is 'Crybaby'"
@joewhite44563 жыл бұрын
But if you don't like a song and it doesn't stick then it doesn't really matter what the song is about.

@@HopAndLockDropSoppityPop I mean context doesn't make it sound better.
@joewhite44563 жыл бұрын
@@HopAndLockDropSoppityPop what do you mean that's not the conversation? It's a review, that's exactly what the conversation is. And how on earth have you decided both my race and sexuality? And in what planet does being straight (which I'm not by the way, I know, shocker, gay men are allowed to like football too) mean you can't like Melanie?
@joewhite44563 жыл бұрын
@@HopAndLockDropSoppityPop personally I prefer more distinction between the verse and chorus, it makes it seem a little like each song is one long verse, and you're waiting for the chorus then it ends. The bakery is one of my favourites of hers and that's one of the songs on the album that I don't find has that issue. The comment was about the song sticking, and if a song doesn't stick then it isn't a good song, regardless of the meaning or history of the song. You might have specified "who don't know or care who she is" but you did so in response to my comment, again assuming that I don't know or care who she is. Whilst there will be a lot of men who don't like Melanie's music it's unfair to just assume no men will like it or that no men will be able to relate to what she's saying in her music especially when she covers topics such as sexual assault especially considering male sexual assault victims already face so many stigmas.
@joewhite44563 жыл бұрын
@@HopAndLockDropSoppityPop yes, you might have said "a lot of men" but that wasn't what you originally said. What you originally said was "it's not directed at the straight white men in the audience who don't know or care who Melanie is". The issue comes from you assuming I don't like Melanie Martinez because I'm a straight white man (even if that were true) yes you later said that "a lot of men dislike her or can't relate" but to assume, for example, straight men don't like her just because some don't like feminist lyrics is generalising and stereotyping which is just so toxic. As is assuming someone's sexuality based on nothing more than whether or not they like one particular album. You can say you simply assumed I was just a random subscriber all you want but a lot of subscribers on this channel know/ are fans of Melanie so to just decide that, despite me having the same feeling towards the album as the person reviewing it who is also a big Melanie fan, I'm 100% not a Melanie fan is weird. I fail to see how you can be confusing why I got angry when you made assumptions about me based on my taste in music (which you also decided for me) and then made generalisations about the person you assumed I was.

afterschool is really a showcase of her growth as an artist. listening to her music from crybaby, she really only wrote about specific concepts that she derived from her experiences (which is totally valid), but they were limited to the aesthetic she produced. this EP showed more of growth in her lyricism and finding out where she as a human fits in her own artistic style rather than how to represent herself in a character. this EP also shows how she is learning a lot about her being and having a really beautiful experience on her path through her spirituality and finding peace with herself. i also did notice her songwriting has greatly improved since crybaby and she clearly has a handle on how to creatively represent her ideas. personally the last 4 songs were my favorite because they seemed like they had more work and attention, also she really went deeper into thought through the second half. it definitely did need time to grow on me though
@joewhite44564 жыл бұрын
Umm no, it was written on the crybaby tour before k12 was even writen.
@yeeclaw13444 жыл бұрын
Joe White just because they were previously written doesn't mean they're all only about her previous experiences. don't you think it's possible that between crybaby and now she tweaked the lyrics and changed things due to her new experiences? i also still stand by the whole idea of her portraying herself as her rather than a character for a more real feel. if it was written then or now it doesn't really matter. what she put out with this album is clearly an improvement not just in her writing but also in her sound (production-wise and vocally). as a songwriter myself there are many songs ive written a while ago and then come back to many many times again to tweak or change based off of how i've grown as a person. if this were written years ago then she's had all that time to do so :)

the reason this EP may not sound as evolved to you is because she started recording/creating this in 2017 during the crybaby tour, and its supposed to be the deluxe version of k-12. this is why it's using school themes and that's why it's called after school. its similar to "crybaby's extra clutter" which was a vinyl that included the deluxe songs from crybaby, along with gingerbread man. basically it's songs that didn't fit the sound of k-12. ALSO: you'll find it interesting that THIS project isn't from crybaby's perspective at all. this is a Melanie project and it's only about her. The Bakery was about her very first job. (don't worry I think mm3 will be more solid, maybe her most solid yet...)

think this EP is supposed to be the bridge from K-12 into her next album "Portals". At the end of the K-12 movie, she heads into a portal into her next life, which is her adult/evolved form. So I'm not sure if she's letting go of her characters/story building. I think she's always shown her true self as all of these characters, just in different ages and maturities.

After School was more personal to Melanie and she said it's kinda connected to K-12 but also not really, when she posted the explanations on instagram you could tell it was more about Melanie personally than contributing to Cry Baby's storyline. I also think it's called After School because it's Melanie "After School" it's her after she plays Cry Baby like its her real self and not her character self so it's basically her after school/after performances ya get what I mean?

As a Melanie stan. I agree. This EP sounds a little off.. almost unfinished. But I enjoy it still.

It's a bit like k12 in that there's often a little too much going on at once to follow what's going on completely.

Cause some of the songs were made in 2017 when she doing some tours in Crybaby Album but still, the ep is still the best
