This song is so clever! It's about an ex-boyfriend/writing partner of hers who she felt was always condescending to her. Because he'd studied music and she hadn't he thought he was smarter than her. But in the song she's being condescending to him, calling him 'Alphabet Boy', saying "I know my ABCs, yet you keep teaching me, I say fuck your degree, Alphabet Boy" ... "you think you're smarter than me, with all your bad poetry" ... "you won the spelling bee, but are you smarter than me, you're just the prince of the playground Alphabet Boy". AND to illustrate her point that you don't need to study to be a good musician, she made a really clever song. The verses are like the sentences you have to write as a kid when you're learning letters. They use A words, B words, C words, then D words (apples aren't always appropriate apologies / butterscotch bubblegum bittersweet / child counting coins / daddy dolly dictionary destroyed)

When you’re done with Crybaby, she has a few songs in between. Dead to Me, Bittersweet Tragedy, Gingerbread Man, Playdate, Bombs on Monday and Teddy Bear. That ends the Crybaby era. Next is Piggyback and Copycat, these are NOT related to Crybaby OR K-12. THEN it’s K-12. K-12 features an unreleased song called Fire Drill. Copycat came out after K-12 but goes side by side with Piggyback but wasn’t released at the same time. Piggyback and Copycat are EXTREMELY controversial, that’s a whole other can of worms, but it’s best to know about what you’re getting into. Piggyback and Copycat do not have anything to do with her albums, they are both about a personal issue she had and wrote songs about to cope and/or explain her side of the story. Yeah....it’s drama.

Actually linking to the carousel music, she is talking with the boy from that video, who played with her, hypnosis her and was in a toxic relationship that she couldn’t get out (that’s why the end of the video is tied up with the start). I’d say that “Carousel” is linked to the family through the fact that she doesn’t feel like she’s loved by her family and now she’s trying to latch onto this boy who keeps leading her on. She’s focusing all her love on this boy because she doesn’t have anyone else to love, yet he doesn’t love her back. He just sends her mixed signals. Hence why she goes “Round and round like a horse on a carousel”. She can never get the boy.

Okay, whole really long album recommendation. Wasn’t going to but I really want to see somebody who’s into concept albums and lyrics, actually sit down with it, song by song, in order. Map of the Soul: 7 by BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan, translates to Bulletproof Boyscouts) It’s based on Jungian philosophy. This is a very personal album, from a very young group. The youngest was 14, the oldest 19 when they started predebut ten years ago. There’s 7 members and they’ve been going since debut for 7 years. This is also the year they had to decide to resign their contract or not. That’s the only context I wanna give cuz spoilers and I know you don’t like them. There IS a Map of the Soul: Persona but it only has two songs that aren’t also on MOTS:7. Their entire discography is five different concept eras with multiple albums each. So if you go for it, you’ll have Army (name of the fans) showing up en mass to recommend and spoil stuff. Just a fair warning. And when I mean en mass I Mean it. Naming the fanbase Army turned out to be a bit prophetic. There’s also two other cumulative albums that bookmarked the end of solid narrative concept eras. “You’ll never walk alone.” And “Love yourself: Answer” But YNWA connects with too many storylines in previous videos (including a web comic, 7 short films series and a novel). Answer is Really good too but I just like MOTS:7 better. By a thin margin. Anyways, that’s my over enthusiastic recommendation from a long time TOOL fan And a Melanie Martinez fan. Recent and now too obsessed Army convert.
