This song is about what actually "goes down in the kitchen" (a lyric from Dollhouse) which provides a deeper look into Cry Baby's family life. Sippy Cup is about Cry Baby's mother murdering her father and his mistress. The sippy cup itself is metaphorical for the lack of being willing to acknowledge reality, the unwillingness to confront one’s own reality, especially when it comes to relationships. The "syrup", in this case, is actually alcohol, an allusion to Cry Baby's mother's alcoholism. Putting an alcoholic drink in a sippy cup doesn't mean it's no longer alcohol. No matter how much a person may try to dress up a situation, in the end, the problem persists.The lyric, "Kids are still depressed when you dress them up" describes how no matter what we do on the outside, our inner feelings remain the same.

Here’s what actually happened. No Crybaby didn’t die! Her mom caught her dad cheated on her so she decided to kill both of them. Then Crybaby woke up and found her dad and his side chick dead in the kitchen (that’s why in Dollhouse is says “don’t let them see what goes down in the kitchen”) Crybaby’s mom drugged her so she wouldn’t remember what she saw that night. So she didn’t die but she WAS drugged.

I know many people hate when artistes write about situations that they never personally experienced, particularly sensitive subjects, but I don't mind it at all when Melanie does it. She is the kind of lyricist that isn't just putting her life on paper, but let herself be a storyteller. She's creating a complete story with characters, narratives, drama, character development/regression, etc. It's a complete story chronicling the life of a fictional character but instead of reading it in a book you get to enjoy it musically and visually. And it's the icing on the cake for me as someone who has experienced some of what she writes about to varying degrees is that I can see myself and people I know in the characters while interpreting it through my own lenses. The fiction of it doesn't make it less relatable for people any more than a fictional book would make what the characters go through less relatable. We've fallen into the trap of putting music into these boxes; lyrics should either be meaningless fun or autobiographical and that steals the creativity from the art. I don't think Melanie needed to have gone through these things for her art to be valid any more than Thomas Harris needed to have eaten people while practising Psychiatry to write the Hannibal books.

hey! just wanted to say i really like your melanie react videos!! you pay attention to the videos and the lyrics and really get the message! :) also, just wanted to tell you melanie did have a good upbringing, no where near as bad as the character ‘Crybaby’ however it wasn’t perfect. melanie is bisexual and while she was growing up her parents made many homophobic jokes (they fully accept her now) and she felt she couldn’t talk about her feeling. you will see this in the song and music video ‘Soap’. hope you react to more of her music!! so yes, melanie did have a pretty good upbringing and isn’t crybaby but they are similar and based off each other. melanie also became famous off ‘the voice’ (the tv show). she didn’t win but got pretty far! her audition with toxic is absolutely fantastic, i would highly recommend it! anyway, keep up the great content!!

I didn’t catch it the first time I listened to this song at all but the lyrics “got weights in your pockets when you go to the doctor, your favorite candy’s cotton that’s why all your teeth are rotten” is a reference to anorexia I believe, it goes along with the theme of trying to put up the illusion of perfection when in fact it’s definitely not

Melanie didn't have a perfect childhood, she got bullied a lot which is where the idea of the "cry baby" character came from in the first place, however she didn't grow up in a broken home. She did however grow up in a neighbourhood and have friends with family problems like the ones being discussed in some of her music. So that does come from experience, just not her own, if that makes sense

I think the “your favorite candy’s cotton” lyric might actually be referring to OxyContin (“contin” ~ “cotton”), especially since opiod addiction has become such a major problem in the last decades, and it affects so many small town / suburban communities where people don’t even notice until someone ODs...real sad but like that’s my interpretation, and it goes hand in hand with the mom’s alcoholism bc they can often be coexisting addictions...

The third Sad Olympics contestant is DEFINITELY Marina (formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds). Her most iconic album is called Electra Heart and it's a sort of character study of troubled American women. That album paved the way for artists like Melanie. Edit (just to avoid confusion): There is long series of videos for Electra Heart that has a story order, but not all the songs are the same as the album. It could have been a little confusing if you don't know the difference, but it's all really great pop music.
