Miley did a series of "backyard" concerts to raise money for her foundation, and their voices blend together amazingly. Melanie influenced me to become a vegetarian in the late 1960s. She gave it up after seven years? I hung in for 12. At a point I owned 17 different vinyl LPs, with duplicates of some of them. RIP Melanie, you've been a big part of my life.

She wasn't a great guitar player. She wasn't a trained or great singer. But she was Melanie. And for me, at 18 in 1971, she was an important part of my musicical experiences. What I've learned today, upon hearing of her passing, by looking at many interviews and older concerts was that she was a grounded individual who stayed married, stayed being MOM, and stayed true to her principals and core beliefs. A Jersey girl. This single post is my tribute to her and her family.

Melanie had a fabulous voice. She composed and sang some brilliant songs like Brand New Key, Lay Down/Candles in the Wind, What Have They Done to my Song Ma? and The Nickel Song. Besides that, she was brilliant at interpreting other artists songs. Like Mr Tambourine Man and Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? I am a lifelong Rolling Stones fan, but I think Melanie’s version of Ruby Tuesday is better than Ruby Tuesday by the Stones. That’s how good she was. I also agree that she was terribly underrated.

I wonder if anyone who covers other people's songs related to the original meaning of a particular song. Maybe none of us totally feel the say way or even understand the original feelings of the song writer. Yes, she had permission to adapt the song for the cause she speaks of. When she speaks of writing it, she's referring to the new lyrics, not claiming to have written the song, although the way she worded it may have given that impression.

She came to Buffalo NY in 1971 and a bunch of student nurses with very little money went to see her at Memorial Auditorium. We started singing along when she sang Brand New Key as did most of the people there. She stopped and rudely told us how we were throwing her off key, no pun intended and literally couldn't get herself back on track. I never went to a concert before or since, where people didn't sing along with the singer or the band and never once got treated the way she treated us.

I remember Melanie a the Isle of Wight Festival. I was working backstage and she was sitting alone of the grass and she spoke to me as I went past. Most of the 'stars' were stoned, cagey or aloof in some way but she was just rea, maybe a little lostl. I think that refusal to play their game put her out on a limb somehow. I love it when people discover her now and can't believe what they are hearing. Eva Cassidy had a lot in common with her.

I used to idolise her but still enjoy most of her music, except for the Nickel Song that she had to include on every album 😄 So sad she's gone even though in latter years her talent seemed to wane in my opinion. Hope she will be in the resurrection to come (Rev 21:1-4)
