Music had a meaning in the sixties and the seventies unlike today. Melanie is wonderful. She asked us to raise the candles high against the black sky after woodstock. And she wanted all of us to be beautiful people and for us to wear the beautiful people button to show common ground as human beings. And music today....? Lets be together....and raise the candles still higher as beautiful people.

Notice how quiet the audience was during her performance and how the set seemed so peaceful and relaxed. Those were simpler times. No need for flying logos, quick cuts, flashy special effects, or electronic noise to capture viewers with short attention spans. Instead they keep it simple to let one concentrate on the subject at hand, which provides a measure of depth and nuance that would otherwise go unnoticed and unappreciated. And Melanie was certainly worth it.
@boggy76657 жыл бұрын
It was expected for audiences to be quiet. Polite or wild applause, as appropriate, only when there was a break in the program. I think it was the 80s when it became usual to 'whoop' and 'whee' and applaud whenever one felt the urge. An early sign of the breakdown of society, and I'm only half kidding. They're extra-quiet here because of the two special ladies on stage. Melanie is positively captivating. The other woman is Sandy Duncan, also a sweetie.

Boggy : I remember concerts in the early 1970s where the audiences screamed “Boogie!” through the entire performance. There were some bands where that was to be expected, like Deep Purple, but it got to the point where every show was full of downed out howling idiots. The Auditorium in Chicago wouldn’t even turn off the House lights! Its become way worse since then.

@Pattie Noah My best friend (also a rock critic) did a late introduction of Melanie to me. Wowwwwww! Beautiful song by a beautiful young woman. VERY unique, and her style/look reminds of a bit of Linda Rondstadt and Alanis Morissette combined. But, I was REALLY blown away with how sweet a girl/young woman Melanie was in his clip. What an angel of a personality! You can tell that Carson was smitten with her, as well.

Seems Melanie was the "it girl" of 1963..., so it would appear from the interview recollection of the time they first had her on the tonight show. I'm 63 now and am so grateful to be able to see all these tv clips, videos, and international performances that us kids in the US probably didn't get to see until KZbin. She was the original hippie chick who I looked up to as a teenager and her beautiful smile, huge voice, and sweet personality were always an inspiration to me. Still today, I'm finding new videos and be so uplifted by them. She is truly a gifted songwriter too. So Pattie, you're a lucky lady and thanks so much for sharing this video! Melanie isn't just "the voice of a generation;" she's the voice of all generations, especially those preferring love to war, sex to violence, intensity to blandness, reason to neurosis (now psychosis), art to routine, compassion to selfishness, music to gears' whirr, laughter to bellowing, purr to condemnation, and passion to repression; Melanie is what civilization is FOR, the making of " Beautiful People;" and I drastically hope civilization will one day soon actually understand or more importantly, feel, what really matters for life and liveliness. We're running out of time. Ohhhh How some of us would trade years to be at the Woodstock, Atlanta, or Isle Wight Festivals, rather than concerts charging $5 for a bottle of water and featuring robotic music. But at least Melanie still plays and plies her song, regardless of what the fanged philistines and hybristic hucksters tried to have done to it, MA, and will be a-coming this way soon. We need Melanie. Now as much as ever.

Pattie Noah Absolutely! Her songs told stories, conveyed deep feelings, and sometimes had great drama and sometimes had great humor, and all wonderful. To hear her talk about how the agency told her she shouldn't play her guitar, wear a blue dress, and imagine all the young artists who were led into what "some professional" thought would bring commercial success reminds me of what a unique and strong personality Melanie must have had to be able to withstand the pressure that industry puts on young artists. Thank God she found her way through it all without changing.
