Little White chick with an acoustic guitar Toe to toe with one of the best Black choirs ever. And rocking it. Look at the cuts to Edwin on piano, He knew they killed it altogether! Great collaboration for sure!

Janis Joplin was heel groot. R.i.P Melanie Safka. Je hebt iets groots neer gezet wat generaties nog van genieten en steun geeft in moeilijke en zware tijden.😢😢😢.

The honest days of music. No auto tune. True voice, true passion. Might be off pitch, but I'll take it over today's fake stuff anyway. Made you feel something.

This song was recorded live in The Netherlands where my parents are from. I understand everything the host is saying. Using the Edwin Hawkins singers to back her up was genious. This song was so compelling.

We were so close, there was no room We bled inside each other's wounds We all had caught the same disease And we all sang the songs of peace Some came to sing, some came to pray Some came to keep the dark away So, raise the candles high (Up high) 'Cause if you don't, we could stay black against the sky Oh, oh, raise (Raise) them higher again (Up high) And if you do we could stay dry against the rain Lay down, lay down, lay it all down Let your white birds smile up at the ones who stand and frown

Melanie didn't mention it in the interview clip, but she performed at Woodstock. Basically she'd been booked to play but not at the time she actually played. It was pouring with rain, and no other of the booked artists would play, so she volunteered to take to the stage. Candles In The Rain was inspired by the event.

I remember Melanie's songs growing up in the 70's. She had hits such as "Brand New Key", "Ruby Tuesday", "What Have They Done To My Song Ma", "Beautiful People", "Ring The Living Bell", "The Nickel Song", "Bitter Bad", "Together Alone", "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" etc. "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" was inspired by her experience of performing at the 1969 Woodstock music festival.

Rest In Peace, Melanie Safka. Maman was a tween when you recorded this classic in 1970. She says you are a worthy successor to Tina Tuner spiritually and vocally with your own unique power and timeliness. All the rain today was cheers greeting you in Heaven!

Some things to consider regarding the audience reaction. This was something very different for them in this time period- 1970. And in the Netherlands I believe so language also a factor. They were not a concert crowd but an older audience there for this talk show that Melanie happened to appear on. Given the time period, language difference etc I thought they responded well.

As for the crowd, they were in the Netherlands, and a lot of those older folks had been thru the war. Suits and dresses was the rule of the day. I remember my aunts and uncles dressing up like that for family gatherings. So it was the times. Stoic faces, but at least they are clapping along.

About the audience: The clip was from a Dutch TV show where, at the time, the audience was asked (before the taping) to sit quietly & clap when asked to. It was just normal for them. I hear it was similar for German music shows.

The crowd, forgive if I'm wrong, think they're an Irish audience?, Welsh?,..they listen to Celtic songs, which can be very emotional, moving,.especially when done by quartets, groups of more, it's a choir like feel, so this, this is an American choir version, it's a little different, but you still get that emotion, that spiritual feeling,..this is them being very moved, and touched by the performance, trust me,..saw older women smiling, as they clapped, they totally appreciated the performance, the strength and fervor of it,..they were moved,..as I am every time I hear this,..it just goes right through you, as the people say in church, the holy ghost, just hits you,..this is so a spiritual song and performance, so glad footage like this, songs have survived and are still here for you young people, and artists like Melanie walked the Earth,..Rip, Godspeed, Peace ✌

Not everyone has a " pitch perfect " voice. If all singers did it would be boringto listen to. Important in opera only! Great pop/ rock/ r&b & jazz have unique qualities. You focus too much on " vocaling".. whatever that means! Melanie was one of the great ones! And this performance was outstanding!
