I know this comes 3 years later, but wanted you to know that the video is still much appreciated. I chose one of the companies you recommended on the list. Not all paint by numbers are created equally - some turn out very pixelated and with dull colors compared to the original that they show you. My order will be here, (Canada) in about 10 days or so. Hi! I hope my response isn’t coming 3 years late, because I run behind about that long too sometimes 😂. You are so correct! Not all PBN companies are created equal, even though many use the same manufacturer. Most of them have strict guidelines for their quality, and they will make the factory push for better results for their brand’s products. Many of the newer companies are making their own products in-house now with their own paints. I’m so thrilled to see this hobby and the PBN community is thriving and growing! ❤️❤️❤️

This is especially helpful when I see some sites selling things for so much and others for so little, and I don't want something bad that's cheap nor over-pay because some think price equals quality and people take advantage of that. I've found that so many crafts are getting this treatment, but you're the only one I've come across addressing companies are exploiting people just wanting something to do/create and things that can be therapeutic. I had thought about doing a series of PBN for a number of people for the holidays, then I thought about homemade soap, but so much felt uncertain and things changed that this year is a wash. But this will be helpful for the future perhaps. Thank you!

I'm so glad you decided to post this! I had been eyeing one of your trusted companies for awhile as I continued to work on my first painting. I just finished and am hooked! About to start on the second but was dismayed by a pale streak of dirt I found on the canvas. It's in a spot where I think I can cover it but I was afraid to order from that source again. (A seller based in China, via Amazon.) I just ordered two fabulous kits from CanvasByNumbers. It may take awhile, but I have at least 2-3 weeks of work ahead on the one already inn my possession from the other place.

Karen Lusby I don’t know if you watched the whole video, but I included tips that I follow when I am going to order from an “unknown company”. Pay with PayPal; check their social media to see if they have customer reviews; check the address & look it up on maps; check the phone number & actually call them to see if it is a legitimate phone number. I hope these tips help!

Hi Melanie! Right off, I apologize for how freaking long this is, I tried to edit it down but it's still a short story! I first found you because I was looking for someone who blended their PBN paintings because while I love doing them, I really don't like the sharp PBN edges you get. I was thrilled when I found you, so thanks for being that person! I'm inspired to start one. So, I watched this video earlier, and while I'm not one to leave comments, I just had to on this one. First though, thank you so much for recommending places that you trust, that's so appreciated, even more so after this.... Similar to you, on April 1st I ordered, over $100 worth of paintings! Hindsight being 20/20 and after watching you, I can't believe that I did that from a company I knew nothing about. But we were in lock down and excited to do this. It's now July 20th and like you and everyone below this comment who's ordered from ORIGINALPAINTBYNUMBERS I got the same BS form letter. I actually wrote an email back saying that I found it amazing that all of the delivery companies they mentioned as being the reason I wasn't getting my order were somehow delivering daily to my neighborhood. After that, I did actually get an email back from someone I assumed was a REAL person, a woman named Fran, basically telling me the same thing, but I was simply encouraged by the communication. (Interestingly, I can no longer find that email in my system.) What killed me the most however, was watching them advertise 24 hour delivery and sales galore, day after day. ( I thought you might like to hear this part.) So, I kept trying to take advantage of these "daily sales" just to see if they were legit and EVERY TIME I got to checkout the code was invalid. Surprise, surprise! But still, yes, this is the bonehead move, I thought I'd see that if I ordered just one painting from them, would I actually get it? So on July 9th I ordered one from OPBN and another one from MYPAINTBYNUMBERS. I received an email receipt from OPBN but I got nothing from MyPBN! Seriously?! The only record of the purchase was the fact that I luckily printed out the online receipt. Unbelievable, I'd been had again! I wrote an email to them right away explaining that, BUT, at the very end I added that I was currently dealing with a different & very disreputable PBN company and to please not let me down. The next day I got an email from them and within 3 days I had my order! I was shocked to say the least. I'm going to write one more letter to OPBN as a formality and then go through my bank to try and get my money back. They, did in fact, also charge my credit card the day after I placed the order, over 3 months ago. While I'd love to be surprised by a package showing up at my doorstep I'm not holding my breath. I'm really sorry this is so long (this will definitely be a "Show Less" comment, hahaha) but I wanted to specifically mention the fake daily sales offers on OPBN and acknowledge MYPAINTBYNUMBERS because they really came through. I'm excited to get started, I'm just not sure if I should stretch the canvas first or just mount it on hardboard and get on with it. Thank you, thank you for this video! It helped me realize that I wasn't the only one this happened to, which doesn't really sound very good, but you all know what I mean. And, thank you for your patience in reading this.

I feel you on all of that!! I feel like a dufus for being “had” by OPBN! I knew better, but I had ordered from them and gotten my products, so I took that chance 🤦‍♀️. We’ve all done it unfortunately. I will look into the other company you mentioned! Thank you for acknowledging them, because I will be recording the “July Legit or Scam” video soon! As far as your question...I usually put mine on a sketch board to paint. When I stretch mine first, I tend to put too much weight in the center of it with my arm, and since canvases stretch, it can get too loose. That’s just my preference though. If you have one stretched on a frame, you can always put it on an easel to prevent that from happening, but I’m a lap-painter. 😂

In the mean time I am working on one i got as a gift by Pink Picasso and the paints are terrible. since you loved yours I'm wondering if the gift giver had it sitting around longer than she let on? If you get a cheap "canvas" painting, folded with wrinkles (likely from China) -- here is a way to have a wrinkle free surface you can paint on. Do not iron it because the heat of the iron can cause it to buckle. Get a piece of mat board the same size as the canvas. Spray one side of the mat board generously with 3M spray glue --- spray evenly and consistently with back and forth motion across the whole thing. Carefully spread your canvas out on top of it -- with your fingers, work the wrinkles out. The wrinkles will be gone and you will have an even, flat surface to paint on. For framing, if you want a sturdier back than the mat board, you could always affix it to a wood backing or book board backing.

Since this video three or four years ago, I recorded four or five different methods for mounting the canvas. I absolutely hate ironing and refused to do it. 🥴😂 I personally don’t use a spray mount because of the mess and the smell…{anything with an odor can trigger migraines for me 🙄}… but I did demonstrate several different techniques for mounting with other methods. Your option is also a great way to do it! Thank you for sharing that. 🥰❤️

My very first order for a paint by number type of artwork was with Original Pain by Number in April of this year. Just like you said, an email came telling me my order had shipped...and that is it. I truly wish I had searched out reviews first but I was sucked in by the lovely pieces and the affordable prices. Five months later and many emails requesting the status of my order or a refund, and I too have received "goose egg". I feel I have been suckered out of $40. Lesson learned...always look at company reviews before purchasing.

I actually received mine a few days ago and could not believe it! You will probably get a package soon. The quality was great for the paints & canvases, but I still won’t recommend them because almost 6 months is ridiculous!!

Amazon has a 30-day money back refund policy, so you should be able to get your money back with them...but you have to go directly through Amazon and not the third party seller. Original PBN is the one who took 6 months to receive, so of all of the companies on my list, they are the last ones I would order from, but they do have good prices and had good paints. I’ll cross my fingers for you!

I have had really good luck recently with NumeralPaint. Got an order in about 3 weeks. Placed 2nd order 1 week ago and already got email of shipping. Fingers crossed. I just got a painting from NumeralPaint and it was garbage. The canvas was wrapped around the frame (which I had to put together) a tiny little pic of the finished picture not in a box and it was wrapped in a garbage bag for shipping and it took 4 weeks from China. Also, you can hardly see the numbers.

I actually purchased it from Michaels and so far it very relaxing and fun but my eyesight isn't what it used to be so I had to buy an magnifying glass (or plastic) to actually read the numbers. Oh my god you just HAVE to try Schipper and Rvensburger! As a german i have the easiest access to their PBNs and they are AMAZING! If you have a chance to try their PBNs do it. I can´t recommend them enough to people.

I have purchased two Schipper kits from Hershners. They do not come on a canvas they come on a board. I did a paint by numbers painting when I was a teenager, so winter before last I decided to do another one. This is the only brand I’ve done as an adult so I don’t have anything to compare it to. I bought them because Schipper got great reviews. I have only just discovered your site because I’m looking for better brushes. Their brushes are ok I am using them. I’m just looking for the best ones. I am noticing now that Hershners are out of stock on many of their kits but the actual company in Germany looks like they have them. I am really liking some of the sites you have used. I love big huge flowers.

They are out of stock of the first one you talked about so I’m still deciding on how I want to proceed. I made a bee line to the paints too 😁 First I looked on amazon then I went thru your link. I was new so I got to spin the wheel and got another $5 off so I paid 45.00 for them thru your link. Tbh once I spun the wheel I was in a dead heat for the 120 piece set...lol but I don’t think they have them plus I needed to calm down. This is good for now. I kept hearing you talk about the difficulty covering the numbers but I haven’t had that prob. So I looked again when I was painting last night and the markings they use are a soft grey. They are easy to see and I don’t have any prob covering them. Ive had several art classes throughout my life and since learning how to blend a sphere in middle school art class, blending has been my fav pastime. If you blend in the direction of the object it looks more lifelike. Thanks for all the great tips!

I’m just getting started so ordering cheap sets from Amazon to practice on. Some come folded and despite all my high temp ironing, laying out flat then pressing with a book I can not get done creases out!! Not all of the descriptions mention whether it’s folded or rolled. Do you have a list of budget friendly Amazon kits that are not folded? (how’s that for freakishly specific and somewhat annoying ?) 😬

I've not painted in 2 years but just bought a gorgeous PBN (from all reports) - the Schipper Tryptych Indian Summer Model - I couldn't find any American sites that had this in stock, so wound up ordering through Amazon - but it's coming from England and shipping via DHL. Apparently their path to Indiana is to go from London to Germany, and then to the US. I ordered it on July 29, and it is scheduled to be delivered August 4th. I just hope it doesn't get hung up in Customs but I've always had great luck with international shipping via DHL. Considering that shipping increased my cost by 50% I've also updated my brushes and actually bought clear gesso and flow-aid to give me the best chance for a good outcome for this lovely tryptich.

So it’s on the “slow boat” from overseas, huh? Lol! I have quite a few on the same “boat”. 😂 They have that painting (or at least they DID have it) at Herrschners.com. They carry all of the Schipper paintings and the Paintworks, and a large selection of other companies. Could you let me know how you like the Schipper brand? I’ve heard great things but have never ordered one.

Herrschners did appear to have it - but they didn't have the actual painting - they had the optional frame :-) I found a good number of US sites that carry the brand, but very few had any in stock. I've used Herrschners in the past, but not for painting. I will let you know that I think. Nice thing about the triptych is it will take me until at least spring to finish all three. I'm a monogamous painter who also is a violinist (and the violin takes most of my spare time).

I’ve done a lot of videos on their kits in the past, so please go search “Melanie B paint plot”, and you should find some in-depth reviews on their kits. In fact I liked them so much I even did a few instructional videos for their company a few years ago. I haven’t purchased from them in a while, but I can’t imagine they would have changed their code of ethics. 😊

I’m so sorry I didn’t see this comment sooner! To be honest, I started with one that I wanted and didn’t pay any attention to how hard they might be, so I think as long as she loves the image, she can rock it! I do think the ones from PinkPicassoKits are good for beginners. I definitely do not recommend Masterpiece by Numbers to start. They’re scary intimidating 😂. Any that have larger openings with scenery (not grass) or ocean types with beautiful blue skies would be great.

Check out Winnie’s Picks. They are in Belgium so production and shipping can take 4-6 weeks but they can create a custom canvas for you based on the upload of a favorite photo of a pet or loved one or other. Very responsive nice people! I have ordered several custom kits. Very happy !

Curious, you called out Amazon, Wish, Aliexpress for folding their canvases, is it possible to get good PBN kits from those sites? Like if I found one I like that was already stretched on a frame? Could the kits be decent, aside from the improper treatment of the canvas? I want to try to do a PBN, and was looking at some on Amazon since they could be shipped to me quickly.

Brittany Taylor those sites have different sellers, so they aren’t all folded. I’m saying that the reputable stores tend to have rolled canvases, but if you get folded ones, they usually come from third party sellers on Amazon, Wish and AliExpress. Those paintings are usually less expensive, and they package and ship as cheap as possible. There are some great sellers from those sites, but since they are all third party sellers, it’s hard to say which ones are ok and which ones aren’t. You can definitely get good quality paintings from any of those sites. Once you find ones you trust, you will know they are reputable in the future. I have bought some good ones on Amazon, but I bought two that were crap! The seller didn’t accept returns, so I ended up having to file a complaint against them to get some money back.

I have a question and would love to see if you have tips for this. I ordered a paint kit from Canvas by Numbers in mid-May. It shipped and with the tracking number from China they show it arrived in Los Angeles on 6/7 and was given to USPS on 6/9 at 10:00am. It also has a USPS tracking number and when I put that in for tracking it shows “Pre-Shipment”. It’s now June 21st. I called the post office but they told me there is nothing they can do. Do you have any suggestions? I wondered if this had happened to you before. Thank you so much.

Anabanana .com does a wonderful job for custom paintings. The trick is to choose the highest number of paints for the project. If they offer 48, order it with 48. If a photo has a million colors, you need as many paints as you can get. I have only tried custom paintings from two companies and had good experiences from both, but AB will give you a preview usually. Tell Josh that Melanie B. sent you! 😉

Thank you for this video. I was wondering about which websites may be a scam - I've had a few adverts appearing on facebook lately. I was going to order from victoriasmoon.uk. They seem to have nice paintings and then had a look at their reviews. Hum... no... not sure if it's a scam or not. There were a lot of complaints... (I checked last month) I'm aware that, at the moment, orders may take longer to arrive. Ended up ordering 2 from amazon; one already arrived (arrived about 1 month after ordering it) and yes, folded... It was, at least, 2 days under heavy books and had to iron it, then it was okay. I haven't finished it yet, but yeah, it's enjoyable. Easily you'll find yourself sat there for good 4/5 hours and not noticing time flying :) Just wish I could see more people's artwork

So I wanted to post my own update to Victoria's Moon. I placed an order on 5/1 (I'm also in the states) and the order arrived yesterday (6/20). Quick shipping overall, however I do not recommend ordering from them. Here is why: i ordered 4 canvases but received two tube/boxes packaged together. They took all 4 canvases, rolled them AND THEN FOLDED THEM in the box. Then stuck two of the paint packs (which dont look like anything special) and shoved those on top. They aren't doing the special foam holder thing for their paint kits. Some of the canvases are so big they came with two paint packs. A bunch of them for one of the paint packs look to have opened because there is paint in the packages. I'm going to look into that paint you recommended from Amazon to replace those colors. I expected the items to take a while considering present circumstances, however the packaging and how the items arrived, I do not recommend. I also ordered some from PaintPlot. I'm looking forward to getting those ones. Last note: I loooooove Herrshners. They have wonderful products and quick shipping. Although I've mostly ordered yarn from them, I have no doubt their paint by number kits won't be any different. ❤️

Melanie, Since we had discussed companies to avoid, another one is Paint Plot. I ordered from them, the quality is alright. They say "we offer refunds, but you have to ship it back. " they fail to state *anywhere* on their website, they are located in AUSTRALIA. So sure, you can send it back, however it's going to cost you $30. Also, they ship from China. So my order took *almost* as long as the one from VM.

I got my first kit off Wish or Temu and it's been great so far. I don't follow the design directly, but paints were great and I also bought more paints from Temu/Wish and they were great quality too and reasonably priced.

@@MelanieBsCreativeStudio I don't see much of a difference between the paints in the temu/wish kits and liquitex basics, but you can and probably should get the 48 set of liquitex to change colors, prevent streaking, etc if there are any problems. mostly tho I have been pleased with the kit paints. I like brighter colors so I mix brighter liquitex with the supplied paint, if it's a bit dark, but do not be afraid of getting your PBN from either wish or temu or ebay, it all seems fine. I should really do some youtubes on how to make PBN truly your own.

@@MelanieBsCreativeStudio one thing that's interesting is that they often show the original painting the artist did which is highly detailed, and then you get the kit which I think they just digitize the original painting so most or all of fine detail is missing, and there's no instructions on how to put it back in, so I just paint and repaint and experiment until I like my "new effect"

@@MelanieBsCreativeStudio you know they're probably the exact same kits. one US company will provide the tooling and tech to a mfgr in asia, then they ship the original product to the official distribritor in the US and the rest go out the back door! sad thing is, these dirt balls never pay the artist royalties, but it would be nice if someone could set up a system for that and find the artists, their works and people can donate the royalties to them since you know the asian mfgrs and even the US distributors are mostly dirtballs on that one.

Unfortunately it's unlikely. I ordered from them back in April and it's been sitting in "waiting for the item to be sent to shipper" since 5/1. I contacted PayPal a few days ago because messages to the company have gone unanswered. Keep records of your conversations with the PBN company if you have to contact your Credit card company.

The only site I’ve bought a stretched painting from is PaintbyNumbers.Shop. Theirs are top quality. I also have a video on stretching the painting yourself, if you want it to be more economical. The only smaller paintings I’ve found are on Craft-Ease.com, and it took half a lifetime to receive them. 😂 I also have a video about how to create your own PBN and print it on canvas paper, but if it’s for a gift, I would think that would be difficult, since you would have to mix the paints yourself. I think some of the paintings from places like Michaels, Jo-Ann’s, and Herrschners.com are smaller also. As far as shipping...🤔...I am unsure of the best way to do that. I would imagine that if you rolled the paintings together back-to-back, it might be better that way? They do not need to be rolled for long. Acrylic painted canvases are pretty hearty, so you don’t really need to seal them unless you want a satin or glossy finish. I hope this has answered some of your questions or helped a little bit!

Please be aware when choosing who to buy from... legitimate producers have addresses and phone numbers.. they do not steal from other PBN producers (copying existing product).. they do not steal from artists (using their art for profit without permission or payment).. they do not use copyrighted materials (Marvel, Disney, movie characters, etc) without permission. Counterfeit sellers are destroying this hobby, they are the main reason we do not have Plaid anymore among others. The materials are often seriously inferior, good luck getting assistance with a missing part or dry pot, and you have no idea if any of their products have been safety tested or contain dangerous chemicals or contaminants. It's worth the money to support legitimate companies. If you want to know where to start go to Herrschner's, they only sell legit sets. You don't have to buy from them, but it will give you safe brands to look into. Your choice means the difference in whether we have PBN's in the coming years.

Those topics have been discussed in other videos I’ve made, except for the paint and chemicals...good point. At the end of the video, when I give tips for “vetting” a company, the phone number and address are the first things I mentioned. I personally like to work with the companies who have the artists’ permission to distribute their artwork. Aanabanana won’t create a painting from an artist without it. Canvas by Numbers has gone to only paintings where they can avoid copyright violations. Craft-Ease has licensed artists, and Masterpiece by Numbers only sells from artists with their permission. The difficult part for most people is knowing which artwork is by current artists and which ones aren’t. I really hope the violators don’t kill the market. I would be heartbroken, along with my viewers and members. 🥺

It all depends on several different things. 1) How detailed the painting is... the more detail, the longer it takes. 2) How much time you’re able to paint each day. Some people only have time to paint once a week, so that has a lot to do with it. 3) If you are meticulous and paint slowly or just relax and don’t get too worried about lines, it will vary. In my experience, because I have either worked 40 hour jobs plus commuting time, or worked from home with 20-40 hour work weeks, and I run the household, it takes me a long time. If we break it down to hours, it can take 40-80 hours to complete a painting. It’s so hard to say. I could finish one in a week if I had nothing else going on, so it all depends.

Aanabanana.com is actually based in Mumbai, but I think they ship from their manufacturer in China during the pandemic. They are one of my favorite companies, have a large selection, and I love their paint!

Yep!! Same here!! They got $78 of my money, and nothing from the shipping link to show movement in tracking. I hate that I have bought from them three times before this and given them any of my money! I’m with you 😤.

I’ve not tried that company. There are so many that are similar with the website and the .co or .com or .shop. I would recommend following the tips at the end of this video & paying with PayPal if you decide to give them a shot.

I have a bad feeling we won’t be getting them. Mine was ordered on 4/3, and the shipping now says there is no “tracking status” since May 1. Some companies will just print the shipping label, so they can claim the package was actually shipped, but that is a scam. Since I’ve ordered from them 2-3 times before, I thought it was safe, but now I just don’t know. 😩

I had problems with them as well, my order just vanished and then when I called my credit card company and complained about not receiving they shipped the painting and it took more 6 weeks. But they sent the tracking with another company name.
