What a blessing she certainly was. Came across her videos when I have never made a quilt. Recently lost my daughter, and Melanie is inspiring. Making a quilt for her husband from her jeans and such. It's almost ready to sew to quilt. She still helps people. Thank you for keeping the videos accessible. I am grateful beyond words.

Hello. I just stumbled across Melanie's channel tonight (7/14) and was just CAPTIVATED by her intense passion for quilting - and what an amazing teaching skills. I saw ur comment and one other but I think I'm a little confused. Did MELANIE pass away or did ur comment refer to being sorry for her loss of someone?

@@missymouse3672 Hi Missy. Thank you for replying to my question. I went back in time thru her YT Playlist and saw her talk about her diagnosis and treatment. Shortly after that I found a video of her memorial services. I just sobbed. I may not have had the chance to interact with Mel on the Earthly plane, in this life, but perhaps I'll get lucky to do so in the next. All my ❤ to her family, especially her two babies. No matter how old they get, they will always be ur babies.

@@deliaaguilar6981 Hi Delia. Yes, Melanie was an incredible teacher. She brought SO much pure goodness to this World 🌎 Everytime I re-watch her videos, I'm reminded that there are still "good" people out there. Even though we're subjected to all of the yucky things on the news and everywhere ya turn really. So, I try to adopt Mel's loving outlook on life.🥰 Especially now that I've been diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disorder that could potentially have a much greater consequence if it's underlying something much more serious. So, here I go again with more appointments with more specialists for more testing. But not matter what, I still wake every GIVEN morning and walk with tremendous grace and gratitude. 🙏

My husband and I were both really sad when we heard of your death. It was like losing a friend. A few years ago my husband helped me make my first quilt for our first grandchild. We now have six grandchildren and have made a quilt for each. Every time we got stuck we would say ‘ what does Melanie say?’ And every single time you had the answer, offered in your own gentle , helpful manner. Thank you so much for all your kindly guidance over the years. Our warmest condolences to your nearest and dearest. You are missed . Your inspirational legacy lives on. Heartfelt thanks. I'm currently in the middle of this step (love this entire tutorial series by the way!). If anyone is questioning whether to splurge on a walking foot... do it! Mine was $70 after tax (booo!) but I plan to continue to quilt indefinitely. This foot just guides the three thick layers through like it's nothing at all. So easy!

Thanks Melanie! That was so helpful for me. I'm inspired now to make a quilt for my great-grandson. I'm so used to seeing your crochet videos that this caught me off guard. 😉 I love the simplicity of a basic patchwork quilt. I think the pioneer ladies made a lot of these, painstakingly by hand, just for the practicality of needing a warm cover. This is nothing against all the beautiful quilted patterns that people use and make into masterful works of art, but I'm a simple kind of gal and need something I can make while my g-g-son is still in the crib! Lol Anyway, thanks again for your always cheerful and easy to follow instruction for yet another beautiful, easy piece that even I can make! 😉

So, if you want to use your backing as the "edge" for your quilt, you will want to cut the top and middle layers before you sew them to the backing (and keep the backing folded away after you've needled them together so you don't accidentally cut into it. Just a heads up from another newbie quilter.

Question on this step... my corners don’t all line up, and I think it’s because some of my squares were a tiny bit bigger than others, or my seam allowances were not consistent. So as I was adding all of the rows together, some corners line perfectly, but others are up to maybe 1/4 off. How would I do these basting rows, since at some point, I’ll be either on top of my original seam, or way off to the side. I hope that makes sense.
