We purchased a house in Tampa in May (we'll be moving from Michigan next month). We've never had a pool before, but the homes we saw with pools just looked so much more inviting. As soon as we closed, we called a local pool service to do weekly water checks and cleaning. We have a covered pool, so not much cleaning required. The only thing we plan to add is a stair railing to help these old people (us) get in and out of the water safely. Love your videos!

I'm up north where we need to close pools every winter. Everything the person says here is correct, pools are amazing to have, but also expensive. I highly recommend getting a saltwater, pebbletec, rectangular (no odd shapes), with an automatic pool cover, pool. That setup has the least headache. The only thing better than that is an indoor pool - while I don't have first hand experience with an indoor pool, I would assume the heating costs would be astronomical. But even with all this setup, everytime it rains, I have to fish frogs out of the pool next day. Before I get into the pool, I have to walk around and make sure there are no spiders in the pool. In FL, my nightmare would be, me swimming and mr. gator or mr. snakey decides to join in. Melanie, if you read this comment, your videos are exceptionally well done. I like to do my own yard work, but I am super scared of doing so in FL given the gators, fire ants, snakes, bugs, heat etc. I'd love it if you could put together a video covering yard work, and associated costs, both for DIY and hire someone to do it. If you dont see yourself enjoying maintaining your water, dont get a pool. I clean it daily, and check weekly. Its like what gardening is to some folks. Relaxing. And the results are satisfying.

I you are planning on buying a house with a pool, consider this additional expenses, especially in Florida with you running your A/C 24/7 and that electrical bill alone: Increase in water bill (heat evaporation), electrical bill (running your water pump 4-5 hours a day), natural gas bill, for heating your pool and jacuzzi ( it will depend on the size of your pool )

SUPER DUPER INFORMATIVE!! thank you so much for this video lol. it sounds like a lot of work starting off. but once everything is going, and you hire a high rated, reliable company to do the inspection and the maintenance, it can last a long time. but for the most part, it sounds like getting the pool up to date with everything will be the most expensive part.

👍Very good video. Pools are great if used often - _especially in Florida !_ But they do co$t `💰´ My relatives just had to replace all the valves on their pool. They are getting older and now have a pool service take good care of it. 💕

Salt Vs. Chlorine. I wish you would have elaborated a little further. Is the equipment the same? cost the same? last as long? Etc.

Equipment is the same, i.e. filter and pump motor. You don't really save much in terms of chlorine. You pay more upfront for a chlorine cell instead of paying over time for liquid chlorine. They both equal out. Cells normally last between 5 - 7 years with proper maintenance.

If you have a home in mind, you can call the power company and they can give you the average monthly electric cost for the home. If your pool has a variable speed pool pump, it will save you some money on your electric bill. I recently had to replace my pump and my electric bill has gone down about $30 per month compared to last year. Hope this helps!

fleghel With my variable speed pump I would estimate that the electrical cost per month is $25 of my total electrical cost for my home. Which equates to about 15%. In the summers my bill used to be about $200. Just got my June bill and it was $166! Saving $30+!

Great information, things I would of never thought of with pool ownership. What is the monthly cost of electricity to run a pool? Also is there a monthly cost for a salt pool, like there is for a chlorinated pool chemicals?

The monthly electric cost to run a pool depends on how long you are running the pump for. During the summer months, you typically run it longer than in the winter months. I honestly have never asked a pool contractor that question but I would estimate around $50-$75/month in increased electric costs. Salt systems just require salt added when it gets low...much easier to maintain. I just had a pool inspection done for a client and the cost was $175 and worth every penny!

If you own a Salt Water and Fresh Water Fish Tank, it is not that hard to deal with Pool chemicals and cleaning it. Probably don't need pool heater in Florida and here in Houston.

HI Andy. Here is Florida, we occasionally have to put some water in the pool...if the water level gets low and we haven't had a lot of rain. But, usually the rain keeps it pretty full so the cost of water is very low. Gas depends on if you have a heater for your pool/spa and how often you use it. Solar panels are a good option if you want to keep your pool warm during the cooler months...gas works best for spas. Cost varies depending on usage. Most people I know with spas heat them up a few times a month...about $20/mn to do that
