My grandmother, during the depression era, quilted on the wall. She had a big rod hung on the wall. She took cotton just ginned from the field and separated/stretched it by hand into palm of hand sized pieces. These little batting pieces were quilted in as she quilted while it hung on the wall. With the rod, she could adjust the quilt area she was working on by hanging it farther over the rod. There wasn’t always groups of farm wives to do fast work of it in a group.

You need a belt holster for that can of spray adhesive. Maybe Harbor Freight or Lowe’s would have something like that. Thanks for the great tutorial. 😊

I just did wall basting two days ago because of no room otherwise! I love it and it does work with glue stick basting!! Why did I not know this sooner😂😳 Tip- after spraying the very top of the quilt edge I anchor the edge with pins , just to add peace of mind!

I’ve been basting on my design wall for a couple of years. Gravity is a great partner. I use fusible webbing strips and my iron. My design board is pink panther foam core so no problems with heat. I had my husband make a base the height of one step. So easy and safe to step up for larger quilts.

At the end you described your process for quilts larger than your design wall. I would love to see a video of this process. I have a design wall, but it’s too small for most of my quilts. I would love more information on basting large quilts.

I wish they would color the basting spray so you could see where it is. Like the purple glue sticks, where the color disappears.

To me, it would make more sense to put the backing on the wall first with the bad side facing you, then put the batting over that. And then finally put the quilt top on top of everything. That way you don’t have to keep taking it off the wall. It would be one straight process without removing anything from the wall. Anyway, that’s how I do it.

Melanie, for the design wall, do you think a piece of flannel would work just as well as batting? I wasn't sure if fabric would stick to flannel as well
@SouthernCharmQuilts
@SouthernCharmQuilts 5 ай бұрын
I've tried flannel and it works, but it doesn't work as well as batting. The flannel also has a tendency to sag and not look as tidy (probably will only matter to you if you are planning on leaving it up permanently like I do).

Late question- just found your channel and plan to try this tomorrow. Do you find your design wall gets sticky? Does overspray get onto the design wall batting? I have flannel on my wall, so I suppose I could take it down to wash but hoping it will stay contained. I have plastic sheeting I can use to protect other surfaces in my room.
@SouthernCharmQuilts
@SouthernCharmQuilts Жыл бұрын
When I touch it, I don't find it sticky. However, over the years little strings of fabric have attached themselves to it. I wouldn't say it looks bad, but just a part of quilting. There's also little fabric strings all over me. I had flannel before the batting and def prefer the batting as it doesn't hang like the batting. I hope this helps!

@@SouthernCharmQuilts I did spray baste my latest quilt on the wall and it was just SO much better. Must admit that it put a shower curtain behind it on the wall, but I didn't get as much overspray as I expected (like you said) and with window open and fans on I didn't even notice the smell. I am so glad I found this tutorial.

What do you do about the fumes from the spray?
@SouthernCharmQuilts
@SouthernCharmQuilts 2 жыл бұрын
They don't really bother me... I don't have a sensitive nose tho. Every now and then, I feel a little sticky around my nose where I must be breathing it in a little, but other than that and cleaning up every now and then I haven't had any issues.

You are breathing the adhesive into your lungs. Please get one of the Covid respirators and wear when you are spraying. Sticky lungs are really bad, and the damage is culminating - gets worse over time. It may be another 10 years before symptoms show up - but by then it will be too late.
@bbbdco
@bbbdco 10 ай бұрын
I think it would be better to put the backing fabric against the wall first with the bad side facing you. Then spray the backing. Then put the batting on top of that and smooth it out. And then finally put the topping on. That way you don’t have to keep removing everything from the back of the wall. It’s a much simpler process, and seems to work very well for me.
@SouthernCharmQuilts
@SouthernCharmQuilts 10 ай бұрын
Except that the spray instructions mention to only spray the batting. I've found this way much easier to get it done without any "lumps" or folds in the batting. The spray can blow right through the fabric, but it doesn't blow through the batting.

I’ve been following this with huge success until today… I’m using wool for the first time and I’m finding that my backing won’t stick. Help! Is this just a normal thing with wool batting?
@SouthernCharmQuilts
@SouthernCharmQuilts Жыл бұрын
Wool is much tougher to spray baste. I've done it on the wall though, so I know it's do-able. I feel like it took more spray if I'm remembering correctly. It's been a few years...

This was a very good tutorial. However, isn't the backing supposed to be bigger than the backing? Are you concerned about getting spray on the floor? Or maybe if you are, should you put a sheet down? I use my back bedroom with hardwoods. You could use a dress or apron with a pocket for the can of spray! You could use those removable 3m hooks for the nails. One last thing, should one wear a mask?
