Im from NYC and these Melbourne Trams are fun to watch. I love how the Trams start from the outskirts of the city and you see how the streets gradually get more populated as the Tram goes into the downtown area. Thanks for posting these!

Thanks for riding with me. The inner city is particularly busy these days due to the amount of high rise apartments in town. Even the outer parts are starting to get busy as well.

We love our Melbourne trams. Long may they reign. After all, Melbourne boasts the world's largest tram network.

I live in the US, and I'm jealous. We let our public transport go to pieces. I enjoy seeing beautiful Melbourne in these videos - and hearing a polite, helpful driver.

Thanks for the compliment. Public Transport is gaining more investment as it is so politically important. So much so it can win and lose elections.

Good to hear that. I grew up in Brisbane and loved the trams but the Council there thought they were old fashioned and scrapped them in the late 60's. Melbourne sensibly retained theirs and now reaps the rewards of a forward looking policy. Used to take my annual holidays in Melbourne, haven't been there for a long time as I now live in Europe but I'm planning a visit soon! Thanks for the video.

This is vastly different when I worked at the old South Melb. Depot on the Kingsway. I used to drive Route 12 in the early 1980's. It went from South Melbourne & St Kilda Beach to a short siding in Victoria Parade just past Brunswick St. The line zig zagged through Middle Park and Albert Park until Clarendon St Sth Melb and turned off Spencer into Collins and up to Vic Pde.

I'm gradually learning the network bit by bit watching these! Interesting how festive seasonal iconography is the same all over the world, even though the likelihood of snow in Melbourne at Christmas is probably pretty low.

Fantastic network isn't it! Seasons are changing over here however. Summer is more unpredictable and the autumn leaves now start falling in February which is much earlier than they used to.

Just watched the rest of this video this morning; the other things that strikes me, is the lack of traffic! For such a big city, Melbourne seems so quiet, car traffic wise (?) Loved your video as always!

At 44:00 an interesting example of a speed table for the traffic on the left hand side of the tram, to slow it down; it is also where people walk across the lane to reach the tram. In both directions at that stop. It doesn't seem to be repeated at any other stop on this line.
@Schony747
@Schony747 7 жыл бұрын
That type of stop was a prototype design for a tram stop. It's a normal curb side stop where people still have to walk out onto the road but the stop is raised for low floor trams. There are newer examples such as the ones on Bridge Road Richmond for routes 75 and 48.

I came to Melbourne in 1968 and have a slide of a number 8 tram coming down Park Street South Yarra towards the City, about to turn into Domain Road, taken at that time. I lived in a boardo in Park Street at the time and the rumble and jingle of the passing trams is a lasting memory. I say this because the sounds, the sunshine and the obvious summer heat made this vid a poignant reminder of those days long ago. And in all these years, including living off Glenferrie Road in Malvern, I never travelled on a Z1 tram...
@Schony747

+Geoff Barry and nothing has really changed either. The trams are newer and weekends are busier than weekdays these days! Z1 shape is always a favorite of mine. I just like the look.

great video! I recall this being the 112. I have 2 questions , where does the line at 43.00 go ? and is the line that goes beyond the St kilda terminus ever used?
@Schony747
@Schony747 8 жыл бұрын
+s125ish The line at 43 minutes is the Albert Park Beach shunt. Years ago some peak services used to terminate at that location. Now it's basically used to turn back late running services. The curve beyond the terminus is used daily by restaurant trams and also used when route 12 and 96 need to divert due to delays. Fitzroy St is used by routes 96 and 16 along with 3a on weekends.

Saint Petersburg has 228 km of track and 6 depot now, he should notice while living in SPb that city council is going to get rid trams there some day making less and less investment in public transportation, especially in electric one. In many other Russian cities trams are vanished from the streets already.
