Route 12 Melbourne Tram Drivers View - 2017 Update Weekday Service

English - Route 12 from Victoria Gardens to St Kilda via Victoria St North Richmond, East Melbourne, Collins St City and Clarendon St South Melbourne in an A class Tram. Mid Morning weekday departure September 2017. This is the first drivers view on route 12 since December 2014 which can also be viewed on my channel.

In situations like the stop before Casino where you were held up at the back end of the platform by the 96, what's the protocol? Are the passengers for you expected to come down the platform, or are you obliged to stop again if there is a hail from the far end when you get there? Been wondering this for about 60 years ...

If there are two trams, the people walk up to the tram behind. I certainly don't stop twice. If there are three trams, the third tram will normally stop. The biggest problem these days is people who are so consumed in their phones that they don't walk up as they are not aware of the tram. Some learn, most don't.

The white light tells the tram driver the tram will make it through the next green traffic light sequence. If the light is not showing, the tram will encounter a red light.

Melbourne is an expensive city, but average salaries are also higher in Australia compared to the rest of the world. The average unit rents for about $1,200 USD per month as of 2021, but there are more affordable ones - you should be able to find rooms for $600 USD per month and units for about $800 - $900 USD per month relatively close to the city.
