On the first direction he internally rotates for the entire time that his arm is behind his body. On the reverse direction, he externally rotates while his arm is part way up. The two movements are not exact mirror images of each other. Is this something we should shoot for? Should we externally rotate early on the way back up, even though our arm was internally rotated in that same place on the way down?

Excellent Thank you. You do keep repeating, though, that the shoulder blade should be "plugged down " when the shoulder at it's full 180 degrees flexion. It can disrupt the scapular -glenohumerral rhythm, reduce the acromial space and impinge the soft issues underneath (tendons). Any thoughts?

this is not true in this ROM, but true in all others. when the arm is overhead it is brachiating and the scapula is designed to retract and depress in that ROM.

When my arm is starting rotating on top position, I feel big tightness in front of the shoulder, what that might be ?

Calisthenics Mobility do you feel any pain or pinching or just tightness? At the top when you start to internally rotate, just back out of your circle a little and see if that helps. I would suggest you try the internal rotation PAILS/RAILS video I have up also. That will help you create more space in your shoulder joint. Thanks for watching!!

So are you consciously depressing the scapula with the shoulder in 180 degrees of flexion? I've heard it cued this way but from a biomechanical standpoint I'm not sure about it. Re: scapular-humeral rhythm / scapula needs to upwardly rotate (which we know is different from elevation...)

Great question! I like to cue it by saying 'keep the upper back/scap active and controlled (not necessarily depressed)' I just try to make sure clients are not intentionally shrugging up to fake shoulder flexion. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the instruction. Would help rehabilitation after a dislocated shoulder and badly torn ligaments, post operation?

Absolutely. Make the smallest, pain free rotations and go from there! Thanks for watching!

Hmm I was told FRC would help me recover from stroke but I can barely move my arm let alone THIS 😳
