Mello is such an underrated Death Note character! After L's death, he was the character who made the show exciting. He put himself and risked his life to catch Kira and beat Near. I think it would have been a lot more exciting if the writers made Mello the one who catched Light, after all, he gave Near all the peices of the puzzle in order to solve the case. Plus he was badass af. My second favorite character after L.

I think it is similar to why people don't like Sabo in One Piece. Sabo was reintroduced after Ace's death and possessed the same abilities as Ace. People saw Sabo as merely a replacement for Ace except Sabo didn't have all the qualities as Ace. This left fans of Ace feeling resentful and disappointed. In almost the same way, Mello and Near were introduced after L's death. They were intentionally meant to be replacements for L but neither really had the likeable qualities that fans of L grew to love. I believe this created resentment and disappointment in fans of L as well as fans of the rivalry that existed between L and Light.

Here's why I think Near was considered 'better than Mello': it's because Near's talents are more suited to an institution like Wammy's House. Near is more academic, whereas Mello is more practical. Because Wammy's House is more academic than practical, with puzzles and theoretical work, it makes sense that Near would be better at it. But in practical, real-world scenarios, Mello accomplished more, which created information for Near to analyse.

Pride and competitiveness got the better of L and Mello. L wouldn't want the case to be too easy, and Mello used the case to prove he's better than Near. How many people died because of their decisions? Granted, many of them were heinous criminals, but Kira also killed petty criminals and people who opposed Kira. Mello even kidnapped an innocent girl and killed SPK agents working for Near. He never cared about justice!

Mello and Matt deserved better. They shouldn't have been killed and Mello certainly doesn't deserve all the hatred he gets from fans. He was way different from Near and L, he used violence along with intelligence and risked his life in order to capture Kira. Sometimes I feel, he was smarter than Near. He used violent means and successfully obtained the information about the fake Death Note rules, he even figured out that there was a fake death note in circulation while Near had no clue about it. Near, sort of used Mello for his own investigation. Near was ready to trade Mello's real name for information from Light, he already suspected to be Kira, he worked with Light to capture Mello and his mafia and his main investigation and actual work began only after Mello gave him info about the fake rules which he had worked hard to find out. Mello even had a very strong and intimidating personality that even scared a Shinigami. Overall, Mello had a very respectful personality. When he kidnaped Sayu, he never intended to torture/harm her. He didn't even want to kill Soichiro, but then had no choice, because he had been ambushed and Soichiro had written half of his name in the Death Note. Self protection and survival forced him to do what he never wanted to do. He was even respectful towards Takada. Although it can be said that him not checking her clothes himself and making sure she had nothing on her was his own carelessness/stupidity which led to his self inflicted death, people forget to notice that he was being respectful towards a woman and chose not to interfere with her privacy, because if he would have personally stripped her, he would then be hated for being a pervert who had no respect for women and their much needed privacy. He also chose to respectfully and voluntarily withdraw from Wammy's, allow Near to be the successor and go on his own path to capture Kira and prove his worth. He worked hard to prove himself and chose to not cooperate with Near as he accepted that he had inferiority complexes and his competitive nature would not allow him to work with Near. But then, despite his dislike for Near and competitiveness, he kept in touch with Near's SPK in order to know Near's theories and basically, although not know to Near at first, cooperated with him to capture Kira that led to his and Matt's death. He said that if Takada needed to be kidnapped to expose the truth about the fake notebook and someone needed to do it, he might as well do it, even if he was risking his life. Mello wasn't a villainous character or a cruel dumb bitch who used others and innocent people to satisfy his ego. He was a true detective who worked hard in order to achieve success. At least, Near gave him credits for his work, in the end and didn't let his and Matt's deaths be wasted. Mello truly deserved to succeed L. Lawliet.

Wow I would’ve been hyped if Mello would’ve survived. Mello definitely by far is one of the greatest geniuses along with Near and L Lawliet. I believe the three of them were prodigy and were very similar but different characters. I agree with you one million percent. Mello truly is underrated along with Matt who sacrificed himself to help Mello. Mello by far is one of my favorite characters in all of the Deathnote series’s along with “L” and “N”

When the blonde female SPK agent revealed to Mello that "all it takes is a name".... Mello knew and chose to sacrifice himself to bring down Kira...he let go of his rivalry with Near at that moment...because they both, him and Near, knew together that they had to make bold moves to catch Kira/Light. Even Near referred to it in the warehouse. He said that the actions of both him and mello, together, would surpass L in capturing Kira

Mello is my favorite character in Death Note by far. I highly admire him for overcoming emotional problems and his inferiority complex with strong will and intellect. It was implied by Near and Halle at the end that he purposely sacrificed himself so that Kira would be caught. This is backed up by the novel LA BB murder case (which I highly recommend) as he was the narrator and stated that if anyone read this, he probably be dead, referring to himself as the best dresser that died like a dog. I wish he lived and actually teamed up with and stopped resenting Near. If only Near expressed the respect he had for Mello then maybe he would stop hating him.

The way I look at his death is that he was both helping and scolding near. It would make sense if he had access to Near’s info through some means, but realized or suspected that there was likely a fake death note, unlike near did. By forcing Mikami’s hand and confirming that there was a fake he was proving to Near that he was the better detective, as he had accounted for a piece of information Near hadn’t even conceived. This can also be harkened back to L testing light with the letters, L said the fact that Light assumed he had all the information was his downfall in that test, just as it would have been Near’s had Mello not taken action. Basically being better than Near was more valuable to him than living.

I think I would have preferred Mello being the one to defeat Light over Near. IMO both Mello and Near had elements in common with L but neither could fill his shoes adequately. I liked that Mello did things himself much like L, but his concern for beating Near seemed to make him take too many risks which ultimately cost him his life. Near on the other hand was almost completely reliant on other people to execute his plans for him while he strategized in the background. Near's strategic abilities were similar to L's but he rarely ever left that one room and even when he faced Light in person, he did so wearing a mask for his own protection. He was the complete opposite of Mello and didn't take any risks himself. Because of that, and the fact that he used the info gathered by both L and Mello, I don't consider him to be as good as the original L.

Near stated himself that he was willing to test the thirteen day rule himself in order to further the investigation at the cost of his own life, so he did take risks. While Mello would be better for a more action driven manga, the story is driven more on pure intelligence and cat and mouse chasing through wits. Not only was Near a child at the time of Kiras reign, but he also only had three active members of the SPK who wouldn't allow him to do anything dangerous either. He was also the perfect foil to Light as L fed into Light's god complex by calling him (Kira) an equal in wits. Where Near actually said he wasn't anything special and that he was just a serial killer. Near spent many chapters in the manga deducing and reasoning everything out but because the anime had to be put out in a manner that would not bore an audience for two episodes of him just....using deduction skills, he was made to just think things on the fly. The only reason Near won is because at the end of the day Near and Mello ended up actually working together. yin and yang to help each other defeat Kira.

I'm surprised to not hear Mello's relationship with Rester discussed, as it's leads to the tipping point in the whole series. Rester is the one that tells Mello about Near's plan, which gives Mello the info he needed to topple enough dominos to take down Light indirectly. On top of that, besides a brief convo with Matt, Rester is the only person Mello seems to actually interact with rather than just utilize. It's a decently humanizing element of his story. Not that this is a complaint, merely bringing it up.

Chad Schmaltz I think a big part of that is the time constraints, and the pacing of the anime, most of Near’s bullshit bat deduction actually makes a lot of sense in the manga, but you can’t very well have an entire episode or two of the anime that’s just near reasoning stuff out.

Cause then she can kill him, and both Mikami and light will put Takada in their death notes. Mello, with Matt, decided to kidnap Takada that made the real Death Note location revealed. Before that, Mello's movements are unknown since the story focus on Takada and Mikami investigation. His reason to kidnap Takada is also unknown whether because he realized the possibility of fake Death Note or other reason. But in the end, Near acknowledged Mello that he wouldn't have won without his sacrifice.

It's MIHAEL not Michael btw. It does make a difference in regards to his character because his name Mihael Keehl suppose to almost sound like "May I kill?". As in how far is he willing to go to get what he wants, and actually ends up murdering a cop when being cornered and asked to surrender himself. Nate River as in Natural River, he's a natural with his brilliance etc etc. The writers came up with these unique names for a reason. So do get it right when describing a fictional character.

Mello was L's risk taking without any moral restraint. Near was L's logic without any desire to move the board or rock the boat too much. Mello couldn't win alone because his process to learn about the death note put him in too much danger. Near took four years to gain any meaningful info and still required Mello to provide necessary info. L likely didn't choose a successor because he knew both strategies would be required to beat Kira

I am on L's side but I do admit Light was more intelligent. But the idea of Mello and Near not being superior to L is wrong. Working alone yes they are working together no they are better.

In the manga it shows light told her his name but if light knew his name he would surely kill him and the only was he could get mellos name in the first place would be lights dad but it’s shown that he couldn’t tell light in time before he died so how did light know his name in the first place the only thing I see is that takada got the Shinigami eyes but it shows her never getting it wtF

@@richardagbaje9914 that's fair. I think I would have preferred if Near had died followed by Light as a way to solidify the ending of the series. Basically L, Mello, and Near's combined efforts would have brought an end to Kira but at the cost of their own lives. Light would be stopped and be banished to the Shinigami realm for all eternity as punishment for using the Death Note.
