I noticed he doesn't use his pinky very often. That's because the world is not ready for his fourth finger. The universe would simply implode.

Neither does John McLaughlin, so he's in good company. Di Meola uses his pinky a lot and so do I. I like stretching octaves. All players evolve differently but evolve we must.

He uses it when he plays fast. When he plays melodically using a lot of vibrato (most of the time) he uses his main 3 fingers

I always thought of relative minor and major scales as mirror images. They add a nice contrast, pizzaz, flavor. It's a kind of ying and yang thing.

oh man! this vid brought so many good memories to me... i remember watching this video 10 years ago... GREAT! Dude, Marty's playing is awesome. NO ONE can deny he's got his own style and vocabulary, a real achievement in modern popular music. From the strictly theoretical point of view, he's REALLY limited: he barely uses dominant seventh chords or really basic relative minor arpeggios... but man HE KNOWS HOW to use that! GREAT FEEL, GREAT SOLOS.

Kirk is surely overated, at least as a metal guitarist. He has only few good solos, like from fade to back, creeping death or welcome home (sanitarium). Beside them, he's pretty weak. But I have to admit, he's not that bad, when it comes to load and reload solos. They are in a completely different style, but are cool. He still can't be compared to such guitarists as Marty Friedman, Chris Poland, Dimebag Darrel, Dave Mustaine or Lee Altus. Sorry, that's just a fact.

I completely agree with you here, and that's why if I had to choose because Megadeth and Metallica with a gun pointed at my head, I'll go for the former. However, I do acknowledge the importance of both bands in their overall contribution to music.

this is the kind of stuff that sepperates him from lil kirk, marty goes all over the place on the fretboard, kirk does pantatonic runs and jus picks one section of the fretboard and uses it to death!!! some dont realise how much better he is then kirk.

Become an autodidact like 90% of guitar players, I imagine... I learned guitar just screwing around with tabs and trying to play them to the song. I had no formal training but scales and stuff, but once you get used to playing solos from songs, you realize on your own like how the scales run and your ear gets to the point where you can just tell the right notes, regardless. I've been playing nearly 20 years (with some breaks in the years). Screw $100/hr lessons! Marty even said he makes it up!

Funny thing is - I only use theory when I get stuck creating a solo. When you create a chord progression - study the notes in the chords and pick what scale applies to those notes and come up with phrases- licks. Put it together and there you go. It takes time and practice. I don't think too much when I solo. I have pattterns memorized and I just know where I have to go. It took hrs of practice and fucking around. I created most of my solos just by jamming with friends and not using much theory,

@Purplino Generally, people would say the proper term is C#m, as it is just the more common way to say it. But remember, the notes Db and C# are enharmonic, so they are the same chord.
@SykoSapian

Thats the reason he plays like that, so when he picks, he doesnt hit any other strings, it also gives him a different attack..

He is freakin' awesome. He knows not only his instrument so well but his music too. What's all this garbage about him being stoned? WGAF. Plus that's just people projecting their stupid rock n roll fantasties on him. He looks pretty lucid to me, and is explaining everything well. That's not what a typical stoner does, and certainly Marty isn't typical.

@BlizzardRREVH Yes they are almost the same. With fretted and keyboard instruments they are exactly the same but with violin they are a bit different. Violinists play Db a bit lower than C# (or maybe it was vice versa, I don't remember). But if we have an E major scale, it has C# and not Db so it should be C#.

My advice is this - Buy a chord book that has thousands of chords. I bought a chord book that has over 22,000 chords. I highlighted all of the chords that I liked and put them in a chord diagram book. I named all of the notes that make up the chords to understand them better. Chords are your rhythm. Scales and modes are your licks and solos. Learn your scales and modes - arpeggioes and technique. Plent yof great videos on here and free websites. I studied theory extensively.

couldn't have said it better myself besides, much like everything else in this world the things we are taught largely stem from EGO and that includes ,very much includes SOME guitar teachers. How many times have I heard the story of the guy who kicked himself in the teeth for learning music theory at least in a way that instilled FEAR in him? It's fun not knowing what your going to play next or how exactlty your going to get to where you need to be timing wise. Improvising rules!!!!!

People are talking about Kirk Hammett. Why do you all compare guitarists. They are both good. I saw another video where people compared Marty to EVH. All the guitarists in well known bands are good and have their own styles so stop comparing them. It's everybody's own opinion who the best is.
