Melodyne • Adding excitement to vocals

In this video Rich demonstrates how to add excitement to tracks by using Melodyne as a form of parallel processing. He starts by duplicating the track, and plays them in isolation to give a starting reference point. Rich explains the Formant tool, and demonstrates how raising the formant in the doubled vocal adds a unique character. He discusses how the formant can be raised or lowered to make the character track sit where you need to in a mix. Rich then goes on to illustrate how to deal with harsh sounds that can develop here by using the Sibilant Balance tool. Next, he shows how adjusting the modulation and applying the fade tool here can be an effective technique to make a track blend. He then uses the Attack Speed tool to add bite and aggression. Finally Rich uses the Sound Editor’s ‘Dynamics’ slider and the Levelling Macro to make the doubled vocal more consistent in level and sustain.

Really? Its not apparent and in the face but the vocal is changing as per the changes. Specially the dynamics fader. It compressed the hell out of the vocals. Even you can use this approach to mix your tracks with melodyne. Reason being there are so less parameters but the change in sound is distinct. I tried it on my vocals. Its shaping the tone and volume so easily.

How do you duplicate a track? I searched the manual, searched KZbin, even searched Google. I found absolutely nothing out there. I tried copy & paste over the track (painfully selecting each blob), but Melodyne would not let me drag the copy far enough to the left to superimpose over the original track.

In Melodyne studio (which Rich uses in this video) you select a track in the track headers panel and hit CMD/CTRL D. Alternatively right-click a track header and pick ‘Duplicate Track’ from the pop-up menu. The command is also available in the ‘Track’ menu. the spectral filter was changing in function of time and the i guess musical content? oh i get it it's real time spectral analysis on top of the multi harmonics filter, well modulating the filter can be done so it was not a totally stupid misunderstanding on my part :)

oh incidentally i was talking with chatGPT, shootin the breeze and saying that the word "formant" can be confusing because in phonology i think the formant is coincidentally, the shape of that equalizer/filter curve, not the ADSR curve that controls parameters of multiple effects among which is the volume. i know you know all this but on the other hand most users are not aware of the old meaning of 'formant' ( though i dont know if the formant is not in fact in the time domain instead of in the frequency domain as i asserted just now :)

I have two vocals layered on top of each other, and they vibrate in oposite diraction, meaning when the first goes up, the other goes down (nothing I added, I recorded it like that) it makes it sound off, if I try to put them on top of each other, the timing is off, what do I do

It’s great for parallel but as awesome as melodyne is, it has glitch artifacts and doesn’t sound clean when the vocal is in the clear. If they get a clean transition it will be the standard. Right now it’s only good for background only. Too grainy, still.
