[UPDATE] March 2023: a new MiG-29 was added in the Alpha Strike update, specifically a Hungarian MiG-29 (9.12) to the Italian tech tree. It is completely identical to the MiG-29 9.12 in the German tech tree, so refer to that section to also learn about the new one in the Italian tree.

Since some of the utter idiots at War Thunder top tier are too stupid to fly the MiG-29, here is a simple guide (full of memes). This video was originally intended for the MiG-29 9.12 and 9.13, but gaijin added the MiG-29SMT and later the MiG-29G halfway through me making this video. Lets hope that gaijin does not further ruin top tier jets with a F-15 or a Su-27 in the upcoming update and makes this video outdated already.

As a Mig29 SMT main, I agree that we have been having life too good getting clubbed by F14B's and F16c's actually I think it's about time they nerf us again but leave the German mig29s out of it, it's not fair for them to get nerfed when it was clearly the Russian bias that was making us good. In fact I honestly think the snail should remove one of our engines and maybe add on a few more hundred pounds randomly like they did before to better help the other nations keep up with the times. F16c is fine where it's at though, we wouldn't want to upset the US mains.

I never said to nerf the 29G. On the contrary, im glad they get to be strongly competitive at top tier again. Im just pissed that i had to rewrite the script again for a un-announced addition and delay the video again. This video was originally only about the first MiG-29s and was supposed to come out about two months ago before we saw the SMT in the Sons of Atilla teaser.

The reason why you don't really see a fuel capacity increase between the 9.12 and 9.13 is because the "dorsal hump" doesn't contain extra fuel. It was planned to have an extra fuel tank there, but it was later decided against, instead the space is taken up by an EW suite, which isn't modeled in game.

Currently grinding the Mig-29G as I write this (100k away), Gaijin absolutely spat in the face of SMT players when they add the G variant, but still I am happy for Germany to get a competitive jet that doesn't come late.

Great video! US Main here, I want to say that the F-16CM bl.50D shouldn’t have been added, instead give me a block 30 or block 40. The SMT doesn’t affect me anymore than any variant of the 29 does because they all kinda scare me unless I’m flying my F-14B. I think Gaijin should’ve added more 80’s/90’s variants of these planes in the game instead of jumping straight to the 2000’s.

Man the 29G is just such a pain because the radar blows. I’ve stopped playing it and pretty much just spam the 2K C-S4 because the radar and flight performance is so much more fun. You can do some crazy shit with delta wings that catch people completely off guard.

Video was great, but I disagree with the last section, although they said they would never add R-73 to 9.12/9.13 pretty much all mig29's got the R-73 irl and well Germany doesn't really have a competitive plane for top tier right now other than the Eurofighter which is NOT ready for the game yet, they will probably buff the SMT in the future to make it seem more distinct and 2005 like.

They didnt. Iran let them borrow a few F-14s to test afaik. In return, the russians adapted their weapon systems (R-60M, R-27R) to the iranian tomcats and sold them said missiles to supply the tomcats since Iran could no longer buy Sparrows and Phoenixes from America.

what. MiG-29SMT is a 2005+ upgrade program for Russia, and exported to Yemen, Syria, and Algeria. Germany never had a MiG-29SMT. MiG-29G is a german MiG-29 (9.12) upgraded with NATO avionics after the re-unification of Germany. The USSR/RU never had MiG-29G. The best action was to add the MiG-29SMT (9.18) instead of (9.19) to russia, since that one would be far closer to the German MiG-29G ingame performance.

But Germany has a far more better mig29 with better flight performance as it’s predecessor but with r73s so that makes the mig29g op in top tier but the smt is pretty good in ground striking and the ets are op in my opinion. Also I think their adding the su27 so that makes it better

Got so annoyed with the mig-29 in WT, I loaded up DCS again. Gotta say, getting aerial victories in that sim feels so much more rewarding. My mate and I got into a fight with 4 enemy planes, who knows what type they might have been. Splashed three, didn't notice the third as we thought we were only fought two, and I thought my first r-77 missed. Turned back since radar cane back clean and rwr said "all good bro". I don't know might have been a strela from the ground too. Anyways I was dead, my mate was dead but we were happy. War thunder doesn't give you that past 5.0

Ackchyually the SMT is only 540 kg heavier empty than the 9-13, and since its drop tank is 480 liters larger and its engines are slightly more fuel efficient, you can take 20 mins of fuel + the larger drop tank and only lose 45 seconds of full A/B time in total compared to the 9-13 with full internal fuel + the smaller drop tank while becoming 722 kg LIGHTER than it right after exhausting the drop tank and only a few dozen kg heavier than the 9-12A and the G. And if you take the usual 30 mins, it's only 374 kg heavier than the 9-13 since the SMT's 30 minutes of fuel are 166 kg lighter than the 9-13's 30 minutes.

If you were around for the bug that let you mount a Soyuz rocket to a Mirage 3 a few years ago, then i assume it would be like that. Saturn V mounted to jets. And no, the soyuz wasnt functional. It was a bug that caused the R.530s on a Mirage III to look like the Soyuz Rocket model used in the Cosmonauts Day hangar. It switched back to the right R530 skin after launch iirc.

I want German aviation i.e. the Eurofighter Typhoon or at least the Meteor (or similar missiles like IRIS-T) for other german used aircraft like the tornado. That way the Torndados radar would actually be usefull beyond the last ditch effort to go guns whilst flying a bomb-bus

​@@codexnrdc There are far better CAS options to add instead of jumping to a Typhoon right away. We want to avoid another F-16A --> F-16C CAS jump incident. First off, gaijin could add the F-4F ICE with its AIM-9Ls and upgraded air-to-air and air-to-ground toys. If push comes to shove, gaijin can just give it AGM-65Ds like the israeli late phantom, even if its fictional for a German phantom, just like the older German Phantoms get AIM-9J they never used. Another option would be to add the ASSTA3 tornado under the current ingame ASSTA1 with all its upgrades and new toys. Of course, the third option would be the Dornier Alphajet, which im surprised we dont have ingame yet. A far fetched option would be a swiss sub-tree for a swiss F-5E + in the future a swiss F/A-18 I wont even mention how some of germany's current CAS (namely Tornado IDS ASSTA1, Su-22M4, and the Tiger UHT with the PARS missiles) are still very good for their BR near top tier.

What do you mean? The variants ingame are pretty on par. The F-16A we have ingame is a early 80s block, while the MiG-29 (9.13) in the soviet tree is a mid-80s block, only because there *was no* "MiG-29 model produced at the same time as the F-16". The F-16 went into service more than half a decade before the fulcrum. The F-16C with JHMCS ingame is a 2006 variant, whereas the MiG-29SMT we got is also the 2006 variant.

Hungarian MiG-29s were similar if not identical WTO export models to the one already in the german tree (9.12) so it wouldnt have required as much changes to the script as a whole new model (SMT, 29G)

MiG-29SMT is an1998 and the MiG-29G is a bit older so I think it makes a bit more sense the MiG-29SMT to be a bit better

The MiG-29SMT variant we have ingame (9.19S) is a 2006 variant with the N010 radar, not the 1998 one with N019 radar. It makes sense since its a direct equivelant to the F-16C variant we have ingame, the 2005 one with JHMCS targeting.
