Since some of the utter idiots at War Thunder top tier are too stupid to fly the MiG-21s, and especially the premium ones at 9.7, so here is a simple guide (full of memes). This video was originally intended for the MiG-21bis and J-7E since they faced F-16s and MiG-29s, but branched out to also include the rest of the MiG-21 family. Lets hope that gaijin does not further ruin top tier jets with AMRAAMs and R-77 in the upcoming update and make this video outdated.

Lmao none of MiG21 are bad. Even that goofy ass F-13 at 9.3 BR (it just lacks ammo but otherwise very good at its respectable BR). SMT, on the other hand is one of the strongest 10.3 aircrafts if not the strongest. bis is great in downtiers and decent in uptiers (even bought myself a talisman for it to boost research) MF might be worse than SMT but you don't really notice it playing random battles, unless it's some rare situation where the difference kicks in. J-7E is one of the greatest 11.0 in game surpassed, maybe, only by viggen due to better kit. Ah yes, forgot the SPS-K, but it's hidden and as for now unobtainable. This one sucks.

Don't forget congress completely screwing over South Vietnam by gimping them with Korea era weapon systems all for public brownie points and to blame their political rivals for losing a "war" that wouldn't have happened in the first place had their "darling" of a president didn't orchestrate the incident that brought the country into the war. Also president Ike for not telling the former colonial empire to get bent and let colonies be free would have been better in the long run.

@@darykeng definetly not from 1.5km but yeah non all aspect missles still can often get lock even from a head on if you are within like 500m and the enemy is afterburning but due to the fact that pl5's accelerate that quickly there is no point in firing them in a head on since they will never pull in unless the enemy doesnt dodge and you lead the missle perfectly

A note about mig's radar. It was intended to guide pilot towards a visual range in low visibility weather. The idea was that general instructions for the intercept were provided by gci (and later by an auto intercept system, a predecessor of modern datalinks), and the radar was used for precise guidance towards an intercept/dogfight at close range, where the precision of a ground radar isn't high enough

19:42 I highly disagree with statement that R-13M1 is an AIM-9J equivalent. R-13M1 always had superior acceleration compared to any AIM-9J clone on it's BR, extending it's range and making TTK much shorter. I would ALWAYS choose R-13M1 over AIM-9J under any circumstances since it has much greater effective range and I would even choose it over 1x R-60M (Usually used mixed load of 2xR-13M1 + 4x R-60M on later MiG-21s) because effective range is so much better and due to short burn time of just 2s compared to 5s of AIM-9G family it is also quite stealthy at those ranges(3-4km in rear aspect easily).

MiG-21 MF is my absolute favourite jet to play. The combination of flares and R-3R's is the only reason (especially in 8.7-10.7 battles). It's still very ugly though. 3:56 This looks so, so much better.

1 correction the russians were actually cooking with the r13m1 and its has a much stronger motor then aim9j giving it one of the best ranges for a missle at its br also worth mentioning is that while all the radars of mig21's are kinda dogshit they are J band radars making them undetectable to many planes at their br's (notably - f5c,all the f8's, some of the f104's , kifirs and many other ones

I'll be honnessed, i had a lot of fun in the Mig-21 F-13, of course, it's hard to master it, but when you learn how to fly it you easily get 2 or 3 kills every match. But yes i takes a while to learn flying with it, so i understand that most people don't like it. And about the Mig-21bis: I got an ace in a 12.0 match with it while it was completely stock. That's why i love it most among all Mig-21s

The Bis-SAU is honestly one of the more fun fishbeds to play, in my opinion. People just ignore you because "lol what is a mig21 doing here" And then they get curbstomped by a dorito that turns into a kite and simply hovers next to them while they stall at a higher speed. It's even more of a menace in SB...

i remember when New Power dropped and the bis was mistakenly added with thrust curves as if it was always in its highest power emergency mode (which the engine only withstood for a few mins at a time irl) and it could maintain mach 1 in an almost 45° climb on low fuel *with* missiles. in my opinion that jet's still the first high performance fighter ingame, though its t/w is only marginally worse now

also 38:45 the mig21 is really interesting abt this! i personally call it 'rudderswinging' cuz if ya drop flaps and hit aileron one way while ruddering the other, it can induce this crazy maneuver by swinging the ass end of the aircraft around. hit elevator during that and you can induce a weird spin while basically drifting! this is because the rudder of 2nd and 3rd gen MiG-21 airframes becomes EXTREMELY powerful during situations of high drag (e.g wing damage, flaps down). you can learn how to control and finesse this in a dogfight, and force the MiG-21 to ''swing'' impossibly fast around a circle it may otherwise never be capable of turning. definitely love using it as my go-to sleeper build for destroying Mirage 2Ks and F-16s in custom battles because to them it really does look like im pulling PSMs :D

The Mig-21S is probably my favorite soviet jet to play. It sits at a BR where it outperforms nearly everything with its fm, while having a fairly competent missile set. I run ~24min of fuel, 3x R3R & 1x R3S, and I just space climb at the start of every match and dick on anybody that tries climbing. The only other decent radar missile at the BR is the Aim-9C and I think I've died to it like 5 times across 800 matches. after you've let off your radar missiles you just dive down and pick people off with bnz attacks and use your remaining IR missile on targets of opportunity (usually an unaware A10A early). When you space climb you typically avoid running into any A10s, as they're forced to stay near the ground, and end up behind them by the time you've finished taking care of the higher alt opponents. They also typically run out of missiles by the time you run into them so they're easy kills. The Sapphire-21 radar is also surprisingly good at low altitude and you can keep a lock on people while in a 90 degree dive while looking straight into the ground, or targets on the horizon above like 500m.
