Around 15 years ago I had a friend who wanted me to come with him to a card shop to play some yugioh. I borrowed one of his decks as I never actually got into the game. I don't even remember how well I played; just that there was a grown man there who made all his own sound effects. Not just yelling out his spells and flourishing his draws, in what I assume was an imitation of the anime... but also making explosion sounds and death screams for his monsters. It was morbid... fascinating... unsettling. I had a hard time focusing on my own games, and to this day am not sure how I felt about the whole thing. I mean, it was... memorable? (For clarity on why I never got into YuGiOh, I've been playing MTG for over 20 years before the YuGiOh game even existed, and prefer the game's resource management. Other than my above friend, I never really felt the urge to pick up a different card game. On the other hand, I actually remember reading the OG manga for YuGiOh before encountering the game; thanks to a Japanese friend who provided JUMP. So YuGiOh had a different identity to me than most other kids. For most kids, YuGiOh was a card game anime franchise... for me it was some dude referring to his alter ego as the darkness,(Yami), and killing or scarring each chapter's antagonist in a variety of imagined games. Quite the contrast.)
