I saw my first Indianapolis 500 May 1976 on ABC. Back then, the race was shown on tape delay, in the evening. The first live broadcast occurred in 1987, with Al Unser, Sr., winning his fourth 500. Incredible achievement. All of these finishes are amazing!!! I have been lucky to see most of them!!! My personal favorites: Al Unser, Jr.’s first win, Jacque’s win and Helio’s fourth win 🏁🏁🏁

12:50 The most dramatic finish in motorsports history together with Sainz Sr's motor exploding under a kilometer away from the finish and losing the Rally world championship title. I'm not sure anything can beat this and that rally finish. Classic. To this day I feel so unbelievably bad for Hildebrand even though its great that Wheldon won it after what happened soon later. I wish that some day Hildebrand could somehow win Indy 500

To think this all started because he never got a proper shot in Formula 1, bar five races for Manor F1 Team the year prior to him joining Andretti. The rest, as they say, is history. I can't wait for tomorrow's running of the 500 for the 106th time.

The craziest thing about the 2021 race was that was the only time in the entire race (which had a grand total of TWO yellows, mind you) that the leaders hit a significant amount of traffic. And they didn't actually have to get through it, because they hit it on the last two laps.

The 1992 race was the first auto race I'd ever seen, and at the time I couldn't tell who won at first. I thought for years it was because I was young and it was a close finish - but no, that cut away to the flag stand as they're crossing the line! Shows you how far coverage has come - I doubt you'd cut to the artsy glamour shot now, or replace half of the final lap with images of worried wives like they did ten years before.
