In this extra-length episode of the Homeschool Journal, Carrie sits down with Cheryl Swope, author of Simply Classical and mother to two incredible special needs homeschoolers. Join us as we hear Cheryl's incredible story and dive into her experience as a mother of special needs kids. You'll learn how homeschooling, and the flexibility and confidence it can bring, allowed Cheryl to navigate the world of raising and teaching her kids, and provide her the experience to craft one of the most effective books on homeschooling children ever written.
--[HJL: 112 | Cheryl Swope]--
Check out Simply Classical:
The second edition of this revolutionary book guides parents, teachers, and schools in implementing the beauty of a classical education with all children. Cheryl is an advocate of classical Christian education for students with special needs. The love of history, music, literature, and Latin instilled in her own children has created in Cheryl the desire to share her message that classical education offers benefits to any child.

I actually emailed Cheryl and i was shocked to actually receive a response in less than an hour and she so helped me confirm how and what level to start my special needs son i will be ordering the simply classical level 1 with some kindergarten emotional learning with it . thank you so much for being so willing to help with our children and giving us parents the confidence and support to take on this challenge. Our children may have started life with challenges but with Christ Jesus and a classical Christian education they will shine for his glory. God bless.

Cheryl did the same for us when our son was first diagnosed with Austism, later with my Dyselxic son, and so on. What a gift from God!

I’m always so encouraged when I read (or hear or watch…) Cheryl. I started homeschooling my 11 yo son with Down syndrome this year using SC and it has been a tremendous blessing to our family. She is a gem!

Immediately I feel encouraged! I appreciate the reminder.. have been in the same boat with my child where we think she is behind in certain subjects, we didn't prioritize those. She wasn't showing to the charter school instructor that she had those skills...(we discovered she is very partial to showing certain skills once she's figured it out she will not want to repeat them if they don't hold interest). Turns out when it came to testing her through my methods vs the state standards, she is at or above grade level in some subjects. The instructor had insinuated that we were desperately behind in many areas, or just didn't say anything and I was too overwhelmed to look into it myself. Keep faith string, even when they ARE struggling! Parents that actually parent know better how to work with their children I think than any out-of-home instructor could.

Is the "special needs" curriculum best for dyslexia, dysgraphia, and autism? Or has there been any research (or experience) with using this program with children who have Down Syndrome (and or Fetal Alcohol Syndrome)?

For mild dyslexia, dysgraphia, and autism, schools and families successfully may adapt the traditional Memoria Press Classical curriculum as needed. For more significant manifestations of those conditions, people tell us that the Simply Classical components and full curriculum have been a godsend. Schools and families also teach effectively from Simply Classical Curriculum for children with Down syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. For a complete list of diagnoses in the children and youth that Simply Classical serves, please see: www.memoriapress.com/curriculum/special-needs-about/.

Wondering how to decide between one year and 2 year versions, specifically level 7/8 for my 15 year old daughter. She’s cooperative and motivated, struggling in ELA, about 5th grade in math.
