Hey Johnny Boy. For most of 1983 I was still serving in the US Army. My last 7 months I was an AIT instructor at the " Lance Missile " school located at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. I had plans to start a Professional Photography Studio with a civilian partner in Houston, Texas when I got out of the Army in Aug 1983. Every weekend I would drive my 1982 Ford Pinto ( Chariots of Fire ) from Lawton, Oklahoma to Houston, Texas to help my partner get the business setup. It was an 8 hour drive. I would leave Houston Sunday at 10 pm and get to Fort Sill about 6 am in time for PT.

Seeing Sally Ride talk about her flight on Challenger was kind of sad for me as I remember being a college student in FL on a very cold January 1986 morning in Tampa (25F that morning, lots of ice everywhere) and I remember seeing a flash in the Eastern sky. We would soon learn that it was the Challenger exploding with all aboard lost including Christa Mcauliffe who was to be the first teacher in space. Extremely sad.

I remember it so clearly. My 1st year of college. Everything was exciting yet uncertain. Glad i experiemced that time/year as a young adult. Things were not perfect -there were recessions and high interest rates and unemployment but those things did not affect me or my family. They started to take funding awzy from mental illness population ehich dramatically increased homelessness and “just say no” did not do much to fight the huge drug problem. But it was a great time if you wee a young white person from a middle class or upper middle class family.

In popular music, while Micheal Jackson dominated the scene of the early to mid 1980s (and rightfully so), all of the great new artists of the day seem to get left out of these retrospectives. The "new wave" of rock and pop, and the post-punk scene which gave us R.E.M., The Talking Heads, B52s, The Cars, The Cure, the Go-Go's, Squeeze, etc. One other observation, Cheers, in my opinion, stands as the greatest situation comedy of the 1980s.
