I remember watching Abbot and Costello movies every Sunday morning after church with my dad. Alot of laughs! "Back....back....back, he thinks I'm Dracula". As I viewed this collection of Americana, I noticed that the music themes of virtually every show was unique. I was whistling along with many, like Mod Squad and Get Smart, and others. Not only did those commercials, movies, and TV shows that aired on Channel 11 bring my family and I together for a certain amount of time on a weekly basis....but the impact obviously continues on today in 2020. Think about that for a moment or two. There were many other shows like Hawaii 5-0 that were enjoyed on CBS if I recall correctly, being a kid through out the '60's and '70''s was terrific.

I also didn't mention that I watched "The Quiet Man" with my dad too over the years. It was one of his favorite John Wayne movies. The programmers from WPIX would hopefully be impressed that all these years later that a kid who grew up on so many of those shows and movies still remember every one of them, and I'm grateful that some of them help forge a bond between my dad and I. As a kid I used to have a crush on Carol Demas from the Magic Garden. Hard to believe she's now 80 years old, and as beautiful as ever. Carol Corbett who did the Patchwork Family show with Cary Antebi only lasted one season in 1972-73. It then continued to appear on tv as reruns until 1989. Amazing how they pulled that off with the very limited time they were on.

Thank you sooooo much for this. I loved channel 11 during the 70's as kid growing up in the Bronx! I remember Jack McCarthy so well--ding ding ding three bells all is well! And Chiller Theater on Saturday at 11pm! Oooooh! That hand scared the hell outta me! Also, some of the shows I saw on other channels, like Get Smart used on WNEW TV Metromedia Channel 5, Gigantor and Dick Tracy was on WOR Channel 9 and Rocky and Bullwinkle was on WABC on Saturday mornings. Gilligans Island was on Channel 5 too. Oh, you also forgot a biggie...Soul Train on Saturdays after 11 am or 12pm (I forgot)---I remember American Bandstand was WABC on Saturdays after the cartoons.

As usual: pure gold. Brought back a lot of memories, and not just what I was watching ... but where I was, who I was with, what I was doing. Like, Sunday mornings I always had breakfast with my dad and we’d watch Abbott and Costello. Saturday nites were a toss up between Chiller Theater and Creature Features, and for many years I could always count on The Honeymooners, The Twilight Zone and The Odd Couple after a late night with friends. Thank you for keeping this alive.

We had channels: 2-4-5-7-9-11 & 13, and ALWAYS something to watch! Can't count how many times, as a kid, I had to climb up on our roof to re-attach the little wire to the great big antenna.

So true Chris. Sports, movies, Sitcoms, News. There was always something worthwhile to watch. Great times for sure :):):)

Chris Brady Yes! The flat brown ribbon like thing with a wire on each side that you had to splice the coating off and attach to the antenna on the roof drop it down through a window and connect it to the TV. And it was such a miracle when it worked!! :)

Does anybody remember the complete 11-Alive song with the lyrics? "We're really flyin' high...Eleven...Eleven alive!" probably around 1978. The commercial had footage of Coney Island and the Yankees.

WOW!! I thought footage from Joya’s Fun School no longer existed. I had tracked it down years ago on the internet. I see some stuff has turned up. I vaguely remember wpix running it for a week in place of Magic Garden every month and a half. It’s amazing how much quality programming there was with only a few channels. Great work!!!

Great stuff! So many fantastic memories. I'm sure many of my fellow Boomers remember the old Saturday high school football games. And how about those classical matches between Iona Prep and New Rochelle during the annual Turkey Day bowl games? Army football? Recorded Navy game highlights (or were those Navy games on another channel?)? WPIX also presented local small college football and then it presented some Big East teams in the 80s so far as I recall. Didn't we see some old roller derby games as well? Man, oh, man ~ some great entertainment back in the day.

Thanks WPIX and Thank You SO, SO, Much, Johnny!!! I think you took me back all the way to 1961 or so!! I kind of remember back then that Captain Jack was on at 11AM or Noon and The Merry Mailman at 12:30. Chuck McCann was my Sunday morning favorite - so creative!! Even in college, I tried to schedule my classes around The Adventures of Superman or as I called it, Superman. I have a memory of another TV host, short lived, around 1963-65, Fireman Todd Russell. He was on around 4 - 4:30 but I can't remember who he hosted, though The Little Rascals come to mind. My imagination or did this exist?
@Johnnyboy7926 жыл бұрын
He escaped me... but I did some research and it said he hosted The stooges very briefly for only a few months. I think the thing that made these shows so memorable with Bozo, Capt. Jack and Officer Joe was that they looked directly in the camera and talked to you like you were the only one that existed. That was the magic.
@JeffFrmJoisey6 жыл бұрын
Johnnyboy792 Thanks for the Fireman Todd info, I knew I wasn't imagining it! Back then, my best friend was the girl next door and it was the first time I ever saw a girl go bonkers for a guy!!! She was totally crushing on him at age 5!!! I agree with how the hosts looked right into the camera. It seemed that all the local kids show hosts did that (at least around NYC). Besides talking right to me, they showed respect for us kids, their audience. They made you feel that they were as smart as your favorite teacher and as wise and lovable as your favorite Uncle. To quote Cher, "If I could turn back time."

iirc - in the 1960's Channel 5 had Warner Bros. movies & cartoons, Channel 9 had RKO movies, and Channel 11 had Paramount movies & cartoons
