If walls could talk, the military base would have 70 years of stories to tell.
The Army garrison, designed by the Royal Engineers, was built in 1953 at a cost of £10 million.
Dhekelia Station sits in the Eastern part of the British Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus - made up of British military and local citizens.

I was there from September 1964 until September 1967 (with a short break off to Libya for 6 months) - I had a really good time there. It played a big part in my formative years, I had my 21st birthday on the beach and visited some ancient sites all over the Island. Horse racing at Nicosia.

Excellent. I served as senior medical officer in Dhekelia 1997-2000. Happy memories. Great to see the place still going.

My wife and I lived in Cyprus in the late 1990's and made a weekly crossing through the Dhekelia base from north to south and back in order to source items not available in the North. I believe the Anglians were stationed there at this time. We enjoyed our years there and wished that both sides could put their differences aside and return to being the good neighbours they had been for centuries before.

I was there (Ayios Nikolaos / 4 Mile Point) from 1973-75, so was caught up in the Turkish invasion in 1974, and participated in the evacuation of civilians from Famagusta, being bombed on one occasion. Not withstanding this, I enjoyed my time there, and my son was born in BMH Dehekelia in August 1974.

Lol! Sad that people who have no knowledge of history of Cyprus would talk as if they know everything. From 1571 to 1878 Cyprus was ruled by the Ottoman Turks and then ceded Cyprus to the British in 1878 with a guarantee to stop the Russians from invading the island. Hence that's why there are British base until now. GREECE organised a local terrorist organisation ' EOKA ' to fight the British in late 1950's and hence got independence. I had been living in Cyprus from 1962--2000( 16 years in Dhekelia). The Greek Cypriot national guard had committed a lot of atrocities against the Turkish Cypriots in 1963 and Turkey restrained from invading because of pressure from Nato but in 1974 because of coup by the National guard with help of Greek Junta of Greece and overthrowing of the President Makarios. It all started few months before when the re-emergence of 'EOKA ' and starting a campaign of killing and bombings against the Cyprus government. Turkey felt once again it's community was in danger and decided to invade.

The Greek Cypriot community co-existed perfectly well with the Turkish Cypriot community perfectly well until the criminal Turkish invasion.

It’s strange we’re spending billions to help Ukraine fight a Russian invasion but we’ve done nothing to help the Cypriots throw the Turks out of Cyprus.

Turkey is a NATO ally. Can't see that going down well with other NATO members. Also, after so many years of being attacked and killed by Cyriot EOKA terrorists, and the wider independence movement, I'm guessing British political and military sentiment wasn't particular pro risking more British lives to assist Cypriots at the time.

@@Orbital_Inclinationah so if it’s a fellow NATO member who invades a sovereign nation illegally then it’s ok? Sounds like the typical western hypocrisy.
