Truly touching, inspiring, and beautiful. I had known some of these anecdotes from Kenji's Interview with 1Up a while before his passing, but was so touching to hear it recollected by his good friends. You can feel how much Kenji meant to all of their lives, and can only hope his stories continue to inspire others out there. Thank you for creating this :)
Thank you for the inside look at this rebellious creator. I knew he was special when I heard he made a game for the blind.

I've been waiting for this documentary for months. Eno was a visionary far ahead of his time. The greats always leave us before the world can begin to understand them.

Reading this brought tears to my eyes. Could not agree more.

Hope the wait was worth it. Between his indie game & "direct-to-user" approach, use of Laura as a virtual actress or accessibility, there are indeed many themes where Eno was really ahead of his time.

The intent has always been to make the content as accessible as possible, hopefully it can help more people discover Eno's philosophy and titles along the way.

He was a true maverick and storyteller. His contributions sadly under appreciated, especially here in the states. It takes people like us to keep his memory alive and front and center. His legacy deserves it.

In 1997, as video games were gradually becoming more visually stunning and elaborate with the evolution of hardware, ENO went against this trend by creating 'Real Sound,' a game devoid of visuals with only audio. The game's advertisement used braille. Over 25 years ago, there was someone daring enough to do something so intriguing. At that time, I revered him as a figure akin to a punk rocker.
@ArchipelDocumentaries11 ай бұрын
Real Sound was indeed a pioneering achievement in terms of accessibility. Hopefully something similar can still be achieved this day.

Wow, just incredible. I watched this whole thing from start to finish. It is truly incredible that content this amazing is free. I have done my own research and learnt about Kenji Eno, but the level of insight you have provided is fascinating. I feel I have similar goals and personality to Eno, partly why I'm interested in him. It feels like a shame that as soon as he was getting back on his feet, he passed away. I feel he was rebellious just doing whatever he wanted, and when expectations arose he felt the pressure hard. I believe staying out of the limelight was beneficial to him, so he could be the creator he wanted to be. I've been following this project since February, and the wait was worth it. Well done, Archipel.

Thank you so much for putting this together! I attended the Archipel Caravan event in Tokyo as well, and having seen the exhibition I have a much clearer picture now of Eno and his creative prowess. Admittedly, I’ve never heard of Eno. I almost think it’s a crime that I haven’t. As an aspiring creator myself, his (literally) indomitable spirit as well as his drive to entertain and surprise people through any medium he touched was very inspiring. It is difficult to put Eno in a box and label him simply as a “game creator” due to how many mediums he dabbled in, which reminded me a little of Yoneyama Mai. I think it’s difficult to strictly call her an animator, illustrator or a director as well due to the range of things she does. Indeed, perhaps true, boundary-pushing creatives simply don’t have bounds themselves. Above all, from what I’ve seen of Eno, it seems that his strength wasn’t just to create, but to make anything interesting. Whether it was just a hell of an experience with friends, comical marketing tactics, or anything else, he seemed to be someone people could look at, shake their head, laugh and say “well, that was crazy, and I probably won’t be seeing anything like that anytime soon”. Eno truly was one of a kind. Glad that I heard about him now through this feature but wish that I knew about him sooner. Thank you Archipel!

Thank you for this translation! I learned of Eno's work through a playthrough of "D", and was impressed by the ambition of it, and I would love to try "D2" sometime in the future. I was also surprised to learn that Eno was also a big YMO and Ryuichi Sakamoto fan, and I enjoyed his own arrangements of their works. Truly, a resonant calling.

Been waiting for this to drop since it was announced a few months back. It feels good to finally be able to watch it. Honestly, at the time of writing this comment, I haven't played any of Eno's games, but I have been reading and watching interviews with him or about the games he worked on, and believe that his vision and way of doing things influenced a lot of japanese videogame authors for the past two decades. It was hard to not tear up for most of the doc. Thank you for making this (as well as all the other docs/interviews that you've done through the years). Love from some portuguese fella.

Watched this again with English subtitles (didn't know about that the first time). I was very touched. I never knew Kenji Eno personally, but I was so wrapped up into his music & his games at the time, it felt like I knew him. So many great memories such as...playing "D" over & over until I found all 9 beetle locations. Playing endless matches against friends in "Trip'D". Feeling on edge like never before in a game with "Enemy Zero". Getting the "God Of Hunter" trophy in "D2" for taking out 99 of each animal. Thanks for the documentary.

I often think of Kenji Eno. I miss him a lot. Like many, I knew it with the release of D, for me it was on the Sega Saturn. I continued to follow his work after that. His death shocked me. He was so young, so talented. It is unfair. He no longer wanted to play a game with Laura unfortunately. To my great regret. I'm French and unfortunately we don't talk much about Kenji. Some players my age have forgotten him. New generations don't know him. 😢 Thank you for this very beautiful documentary. Which I watched alone on Christmas Day. Thank you so much

Man, just finished this and I'm a lot of words Kenji Eno was one of my heroes that I admired growing up and the Work he did was truly one of a kind. D was my first exposure to him and was pretty engrossing as an adventure game and Enemy Zero was while at times difficult, was a very good and unique survival horror game. D2 for me, is one of my favorite games and Stood as one of the first and greatest examples of how special video games could. It felt very personal and unlike anything that has been made before and since then. I can never think of a game that gave me a similar feeling by the end, that D2 did and I thank eno for making that. His Passing 10 years ago was a real loss, He made games that were unlike anything on the market and put a lot of himself in them. Not Only that, He was an equally very talented musician and him scoring music for his games made it feel more personal of him. Knowing there were others in the industry that knew and admired him is very heartwarming. Seeing this makes me want to go back to the games he made again. Thanks a lot for this Documentary of a man who had one of the most unique voices in games and one who was truly ahead of his time.
If Kenji Eno was alive, he would have made the craziest most realistic VR game ever, he was a man that wanted to create weird stuff and cutting edge stuff, at his time, CD-Rom pc games and the 3DO were the ultimate cutting edge for the living room, also the 90s were a very "auteur" decade, in cinema, music, tv and of course videogames, many of the creative minds that created several out of the box masterpieces came from his team, like Fumito Ueda the creator of ICO a game that was copied and studied to death and of course Shadow of the Colossus, i still think the last guardian is incredible and a very original creation that was too copied even when it was not released; love his stuff, very original
Beautiful, heartbreaking, and a monument to the power of creators like Kenji Eno who live to create and to share their love of creation with the World. Thank you, Archipel.

I haven't played any of his games but it was a really touching documentary. I thought his wife was really brave at the end and the memory of his travel to San Fransisco was hilarious; a great tribute.

It’s nice to see him recognized in this film. Rest in peace, Kenji. I so wanted to see more of his work. He would have gone on to make horror masterpieces that were like no other. I’ll always at least be thankful we got D2. It was truly the largest and greatest game he had made. I would have so loved to see what he would have done afterwards. Especially on today’s hardware.

The first time I learned about Kenji Eno was Enemy Zero. It was a game I was so intrigued with on a lot of levels. And the more I learned about Eno, the more I realized we were very much alike - eccentric and full of ideas on how things can and should be different. RIP Eno-san. And with Enemy Zero, I want to thank you for giving me the most intense levels of fear my life has ever experienced.
