The movie was inspired by a real life serial killer case in Korea. Apparently, they have caught the killer this year. Lee Chun-Jae ,the serial killer confessed and was surprised that he wasn't caught sooner. Nice reaction btw!
I believe it was last year. I remember obliviously watching the movie while I was out for business and then I researched the film and found out they caught him the same day and year I watched the film.

@@Johjibebop He was already in prison for the rape and murder of his sister in law (1994) and is doing time for that murder. He unfortunately can't be prosecuted for the infamous serial murders because statute of limitations had already expired

Imagine that this movie is released and a real serial killer is watching this movie in a theater and enjoying the memories of what he did. He was recently caught by the police, but he must have seen and enjoyed this movie.

Fun reaction and amazing timing. I literally finished watching this flick a few hours ago, just on a whim. As for the true life serial killer, I believe they identified the man responsible. Apparently, he was already serving a life sentence for the rape and murder of his sister-in-law and modern day DNA analysis was able to link him to 4 of the murders. He eventually wound up confessing.

This is one of my favorite movies. It was suggested that people would feel differently about the movie now that they know who did it. But I think that's a crazy story on it's own. Sad for the poor guy who did 20 years for murder #8 but they said he'll get the equivalent of 1.6 million in compensation.

Personally I like this movie and "Mother" the most among Bong's movies. Since the real killer was not specified at the time of the movie, the last scene of the movie was especially unforgettable. Whenever I see this movie scene, I feel sad and heartbroken, because it is a story about people who actually suffered and who must be still suffering. In addition to the women who were raped and murdered, their families had to have a more painful time because the murderer was not caught for more than 30 years. There have been several false confessions due to coercive investigations, 3 men have committed suicide, and some have suffered from torture. A man served 20 years in prison and was recently acquitted.

There is a serial murder case of Lee Chun-jae as a case similar to this movie. He was raped, murdered, and served his sister-in-law in prison after a persistent investigation by investigators, and he also saw this movie. But he was not punished for the expiration of the statute of limitations.

Another thing about the last scene, even though the killer is caught, it shows how desperate we get when we can't find the murderers, and how much it affects us. Not just in this case but in general.

As you know, this movie is based on a true story, and at the time this movie was made (2003), the criminal had not been caught. Then, in 2019, the real culprit, Lee Chun-jae, was arrested using newly developed DNA restoration technology. Lee Chun-jae had already been sentenced to life imprisonment for another crime (1994) and was serving time in Busan Prison. He watched this movie in prison and said he felt nothing. With this, this cold case has been solved...

Great reaction. Tbh, I really don't like the color correction to this movie. The original print is so full of color and makes I look more interesting than depressing. The look of grey gives off a David Fincher vibe and it pisses me off so much.

That is from a true story and they already knew who the killer was, but the killer couldn't pay for those serial murder crimes because the they have expiration for the judicial proceedings. I'm sorry I forgot what it's called. Anyway, isn't it unjust? So sad for his victims and their family. :(
