Memorization is king for pre-meds and med students alike. You have also probably looked into how to improve your memory and come across key techniques like spaced repetition, flashcards, memory palace (method of loci), and mnemonics. But while many guides report the benefits of using each of these methods, it’s difficult to know how to actually implement each memorization method in your study routine. In this video I go over how I used each of these memorization methods to learn vast amounts of information in medical school quickly and effectively. Memorization was not one of my strengths, but using these techniques has made it much easier. I hope you find these tips equally helpful!
I go over:
1. Planning your memorization technique based on the type of information you need to learn
2. Flashcards (Anki)
3. Mnemonics
4. Memory Palace / Method of Loci
5. Reviewing each method regularly
Also, I have completely redone the www.medschoolinsiders.com website. It will be jam packed with high quality blog posts and content to supplement these videos. I will also be featuring guest posts on a regular basis from other medical students and residents. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Can we talk about how weird it is that memory making techniques and practices arent taught in school from a young age. Like I understand that one may develope them while in school but doing a class on them along with the other basics like english or maths would build better minds in kids. Dont know exactly how we could impliment it but the fact that we havent tried is whats interresting.

I've written on my blog extensively about this issue, Ima. The problem is that certain kinds of memory techniques really are taught in school - just not well. I suggest that we also not place the responsibility solely on schools, but also on parents who could be demonstrating these skills themselves. I have interviews with two parents and their kids who do just that and its incredible what comes out of it. Finally, I have an interview with the great Lynne Kelly who wrote The Memory Code. She takes these techniques into schools and does amazing things for kids with them. I think if we support the people already doing the work and do these things ourselves so kids see the value in it, then schools will pick it up naturally and probably much more quickly. Institutions are slow moving machines, after all, but we don't have to be.

it's probably because every individual has a different way of memorising and mostly you can't typecast methods that would be good. In my high school, my chemistry teacher encouraged mnemonics for memorising periodic table and functional groups, and making songs and stories about reactions and properties and I absolutely loved it, but a lot of students found it wasteful and useless... so probably that's why.

Well I don’t know what kind of school you went to but in my school they did teach us that.. I would tell you the name of the school but I can’t remember. But that’s ok, the doctor gave me some pills to take that promise to improve my memory. I just keep forgetting to take them. Jaja 😂

I’m in the police academy and I used the memory palace for memorizing the Penal Code. I made each room in my house represent a level of offense (C-A misdemeanors, 3-1/Capital felonies). I then walked into each room and studied the offenses tied to that room and repeated for the rest. I now can’t think of a specific offense without seeing myself standing in the room it’s connected to. I suck at memorizing so this really helped.

Great video, hope you all are having a nice day.

Hi! I'm in a masters in biomedical sciences program so it's a postbacc program that's designed to be just like med school but just a little less. I'm having some issues with memorizing all the information in such a short amount of time. I make a "study guide" for each lecture where I type up my notes but in my own words and then if I'm still lost of concepts I make ankis off of them. Do you think this is the most efficient way to spend my time studying? Thanks!

Hey I have a question! In order to get into medschool I need to pass a test (so be better than about 80% of my competitors). One subtest is to learn 15 patients with 5 attributes (i.e. Name, Age, profession, condition, a thing about their personality) in 6 minutes! And also 20 abstract figures colored in some place to be learned in 4 minutes. Then 1 hour later after some more tests( understanding long texts) You need to recall these things. 20 questions about the patients (i.e. The arrogant patient has...) in 7 minutes. And recalling where all the 20 figures were colored in 5 minutes. What memory technique can you recommend? People say I need to make abstract stories but I can't really do this in 6 resp. 4 minutes! I need to get full points!

The thing that’s somewhat discouraging (and also frustrating) of all the people I’ve met in life that have incredible long & short term memories... they aren’t actually using (ie) Loci or memory palace techniques, which I find incredibly amazing seeing how memorization and recall can be so incredibly easy and near effortless for some, while others struggle and need to apply a ton of specialized and exhausting antidotes, just to retain and recall things from one moment to the next :(

@kodiererg
@kodiererg 7 жыл бұрын
Rocket Gaming I personally learned to write c++ in high school, but javascript or any other will work too. Write a program to do each formula for you. You'll find by the time you have your program wrote, you will have memorized the formula and found the most efficient method of doing it. It's also useful because then you have a handy computer program or phone app that can do those formulas as well.

Seems odd that you separate out Loci as a separate category from mnemonics. Generally the method of loci is considered a subtype of mnemonics. Generally visual association, acrostics, rhymes, stories, loci are all considered mnemonics.
