My first college test ever was in a huge auditorium with the little desks that fold over your chair. They were barely big enough to fit your test on and everyone was really cramped up together. It definitely made me think of this.

I am looking at this through two viewpoints. On the one hand, James Edwards (Will Smith) seemed the perfect candidate for the MIB: when he asked what the test was about, and the military boy gave a vague answer, James was the only one to actually still wonder what the test was about, making him understanding; when he pulled the table to help him, he was obviously resourceful;

C.I.A. Actually had similar tests in it's founding days, when they were looking to recruit new field agents. Some of the tests were meant to be a test of character, some exercises were dangerous, those who did them without question, were better at following orders and carrying out the mission no matter what, the others that refused to do the exersise, were not dropped out of the program, instead they were considered to be of a "tactical" mind set, and were trained to be operation planners, etc..

@cb2198 Funny thing is, apparently in the novelization (or so I've heard, having never read it myself), the alien targets are taken from ugly but generally harmless species, and K and Z apparently say to each other that J did do the right thing in shooting little Tiffany. Nice to see official confirmation that we were all right in assuming that the main point of the test was to see if potential agents could think outside the box (useful when dealing with non-human sentient lifeforms).

When he shot the cardboard girl with the textbooks, and gave a really good explanation to his target, he proved to be analytical; standing up for himself proved he was self-respecting, but asking if he should apologize (albeit sarcastically), proved he was able to recognize flaws in judgment; finally, he raced after a sephalapoid, making him courageous. In short, a perfect candidate.

You guys are on to it. The test was designed to test how the candidates would react to aliens in the environment. J was the only one who stopped to think about what the aliens were doing rather than the fact they were just aliens. In the world of mib aliens come in all forms and appearances and J is the only one who appreciates this. Aliens in disguise are usually the ones with something to hide. Look at the two villians from the movies - the farmer cockroach and selena in the form of a model.

There was one of each branch present, and the one who said west point class of whatever, the best of best etc etc. He was Army, learn your military uniforms. And hollywood should have enough common sense to know that people in the military are still people. Do you think when I put on my uniform i suddenly become some hardass, no Im still me.
