I gotta point out how much I love the new Lex. Instead of being a charming, ruthless businessman playboy. He's so fittingly different. What type of character embodies none of the earnest morals of a simple and peaceful rural life that Clark had. Which type of character embodies the opposite of Clark's hope in humanity and only cynicism in humanity, which type is constantly smug, stubborn and likes to show their superiority complex. They made Lex a chronic Redditor/Channer, which in todays age, being a foil to Superman is the most fitting thing ever lmao

According to TV Tropes, the Electric Black Guy trope (and yes, that is the actual name of the trope) was started by DC Comics' first headlining African-American superhero: Black Lightning. Basically the first main stream solo black superhero had electric powers, so a lot of heroes of color that came later wound up paying homage to the original to one degree or another. See: Static/Shock and Miles Morales to name just two.
@certainpovmedia8 ай бұрын
Yeah, there's a whole weird history of how electric power has got conflated with people of color. I think it is separate however from the ginger to person of color swap even if it happens sometimes on the same character, like Lightning Lad in the Bendis Legion of Superheroes
@alx97768 ай бұрын
Static Shock, I feel, is more the trendsetter, what with his animated series, compared to Black Lightning's relative obscurity. Hell, you could argue Storm was the original. And between Static and Miles, you also had anime keeping the theme alive, with Naruto's Kumogakure ninja and Bleach's Yoruichi.
@josephperez20048 ай бұрын
From my understanding, part of the equation was actually trying to dodge copyright and playing fast and loose. DC didn't want to pay the creator of Black Lightning when they were mskingvthe Superfriends, so they creted their 'completely original' character.... Black Vulcan. And this sort of thing happened a few times, making a legally distinct copy of the original to avoid paying the creator. Andxin the process they created a half dozen blavk superheroes ALL of which were built around an electric power set.

@@certainpovmediaI think it's just because gingers in comic media was originally used to help display the struggles/act as representation for a socially marginalized group And gingers (and the Irish community as a whole) has over time slowly grown out of being seen as marginalized and was replaced by the African-American community due to those struggles being more prominent and brought to light (and still not really seen as "fixed" the same way the Irish community struggles are).

People have been saying it for a long time they just usually get dismissed as alt-right for some reason. It’s gotten to the point that me and my sister take bets on if the Ginger in an adaptation is going to get replaced. They’re already constantly discriminated and now they’re being removed from the few popular franchises they exist in. 1:55:00 On the surface this show and Ouran HHS are pretty dissimilar, but I honestly think they've got the same vibe. The fundamental core of each show is the emotional inner lives of each character, and how they each express out into the world. Like, Clark is not Superman because he wants to be a larger than life figure, he's Superman because Superman is how he manages the conflict between wanting to be normal and wanting to do deeds that happen to be larger than life. General Lane is villainous not because he's malevolent, but because he's scared and his fears blind him to to any interpretation of Kryptonian action that isn't malicious. Both shows have that fundamental trait that even when the plot goes off into crazy town, you can still consistently predict roughly what will happen next if you already know what's going on inside the heads of all the characters (including the supposedly unimportant ones).

This is not a new concept, more it is an expansion. Lois and Clark : The New Adventures of Superman did it first and Dean Cain's Clark even said "Superman is not who I am, it's what I can do." The show centered on Clark and Lois's relationship as well as Clark's trials and tribulations of being an Earth raise Alien. This show just added the anime influence that mad Teen Titans good before Go!.

There's a line Amanda Waller says to General Lane (right after he realizes Superman is innocent), "Are you having doubts because of something real? Or is it because Superman reminds you of HER?" When i first heard that line, i automatically assumed she was talking about Lois. But why would Superman remind the general of his daugher? Because they're roughly the same age? How would he even know that? Listening to your video today is when I realised- Waller's taking about KARA. Last Daughter of Krypton Kara. General Lane must've met her, a lone traumatized Kryptonian child who couldn't possibly have played a role in anything so... he let her go? Escape to the stars? Presumed dead? Living on Mars? Teamed up with Zod and Braniac??? Is Kara Zod???

Well, in season 2, we see a scene between Sam and teenage Lois where Sam thinks he and Lois are about to share a moment of triumph that has been a long time coming but instead she has an emotional breakdown and unloads on him her entire lifetime of agony and that is the mortal blow to their relationship. Zero Day pt 2, Gen. Lane has Supes right where he wants him, he is so certain that this is a moment of triumph a long time coming and instead...the alien is completely inconsolable and has a breakdown. Sam realizes he was devastatingly wrong before and could be again. He probably would have confided in Waller, his number 2, when his daughter, the prime reason he chose this path, left him. She was definitely bringing that up.

I'm thinking the core turned toxic and poisoned the planet, maybe the braniac machines were created to try to restore it then in the turmoil of people dying while trying to leave Zod took over in a military coup, converted braniac for military purposes and Zor sent Kal through the portal to escape the military dictatorship that Zod implemented. What if instead of just a ship full of Kryptonians that Zod usually has, this ends up as a full Kryptonian empire for supes to fight off and feel angsty about (continuing his current oh no my people are so violent and bad angst).

The thing with Jimmy Olsen's design change is that he's part of this overall trend, this "Profitable Calculus of Representation" you see in modern stories (and particularly adaptations like superhero ones). Since representation is more applauded and accepted these days, but company boards are still scared of internet backlash when it's applied to major (particularly preexisting) characters (combined with likely their own internal biases), you therefore get these creators caught between their own creativity and their corporation limits, and making the same choice in character design. A lot. To the point where, over time, it almost feels like a compromise. Maybe it's just recency bias, but with Jimmy here, alongside other recent animated characters like Gus from The Owl House and Bow from She-Ra, all very modern animated series with a black character as the protagonist trio's third wheel, you do start to see a 'code in the Matrix', as Blue put it. Not of one company, but of a general mindset between creators. You can start to guess which character is likely to be changed to non-white (and it's not often the protagonist), or which character will be retconned into being bi or queer (especially in superhero comics). I don't think I'd call it an outright negative trend, but it still does feel like creators are getting really comfortable with a template and often feel unwilling to just boldly go out there with an adaptation. Something along the lines of "The last member of an alien species, adopted son of Earth, doesn't have to be white", or "This main character, with some homoerotic subtext but also iconic romantic storylines with the opposite gender, can be gay this time"; these stories seem like the kind of thing shot down by a higher up for being "too risky". It feels like these modern stories have found a "safe" point, and therefore feel comfortable with not stepping outside it. (Is this saying anything? I've just been noticing these patterns a lot, that's all.)
