These guys were so lucky to be on the same podium with Phelps in his final Olympic and Wang Shun who was bronze medalist now wins gold in men’ 200m in Tokyo2020. It’s so impressive like you took picture with your idol and you become gold medalist like him.

Swimming bestows a lot of medals. So put the medal tally aside. The fact that he won on 4 different Olympics (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016) is what make him a legend.

That's not true. Bolt competed in Athens 2004 in 200m and did not pass the first round. So he has 9 gold metals from 10 races :)

I've watched this race 100 times and for him, at 31, to blow the field away in the last 50m is insane. His 150 turn is scary good here.

I remember the first time he broke 1:55 barrier was in WC 2007 (1:54.98) and after 9 years he still went 1:55 sub (1:54.66) at his age of 31.... Incredible !!!

I was in high school when these olympics happened. The school had tvs around the school and played the Olympics when they were on. And during one of Michaels races the bell went to return to class and we all turned to the teachers but they were like nah just watch it and go. Best moment ever!!

That final breast to free turn and free leg is one of phelps great moments. Over 30 and he still has it in him to turn it on and bury the best the world has to offer, and he looks so smooth when he's doing it. When that stroke rate increases the final 25, the greatness is just undeniable.

@@dylanh8659 a lot of these non-swimmers and casuals give so much credence to his feet, or his lungs, wingspan, etc. the thing they always seem to ignore is that every single one of those competitors has those features; without them, those times would be impossible. the only reason why phelps is so dominant is not due to his impressive genetics, but to his hard-working genius.

Both Lochte and Pereira fell for Phelp's game, which is to go fast and dare the competition to keep up the blistering pace. They paid the price and didn't even make it on the podium.

Sorry Michael, sorry media. But the 200IM, not the 200 fly, is Phelps' best Olympic event. 4 straight gold medals, and the races weren't close as you can see: Margin of Victory over Silver Medalist 2004: 1.64s 2008: 2.29s 2012: 0.63s 2016: 1.95s

In addition to his wins whats really impressive is the margin of victory. Athens 2004 - 1.64s ahead of 2nd place Beijing 2008 - 2.29s ahead of 2nd place London 2012 - .63s ahead of 2nd place (Lochte) and 1.95 ahead of 3rd Rio 2016 - 1.95s ahead of 2nd place He didnt just win - he dominated this event at the Olympics!

The only goal Michael left unfinished in his career was that 200 IM world record held by Lochte from Shanghai in 2011. At 3:50 you can see him frown after he looks at the clock before he smiles because he knows that was his last shot...

Something interesting that I noticed around 3:12 when Phelps transitions from breast to free is that he doesn't complete a breaststroke kick on his last stroke going into the wall. It is something I have seen occasionally from others, but never quite at this level. Perhaps it is to preserve momentum through that last stroke into the wall?

Very late reply but it's definitely to do with keeping the momentum he built up into the wall. If he had kicked into the wall, he would've been too close to fully extended into the wall and efficiently maintain his speed.
