A wonderful rendition. A classic recording with Sir Malcolm Sargent.

All soloists are in most splendid voice and together with the choir and orchestra produce a most wonderful and memorable performance. A favourite recording of mine in particular.

Grande Mendelssohn, ispirato dal Signore; ottimo Sargent e complessivamente artisti e coro.

I sang this as a chorus tenor years ago. It`s exciting to sing and it`s a shame that is not performed more often. I am always struck by the musical phrases in the Overture and the same phrases in The Hebrides Overture. "Baal we cry to thee" is a highlight and quite easy to sing once your`ve learned it. The short treble solo if performed by a good treble is a lovely addition. The high note soars clear above Elijah.

Thanks for posting this gem! Most of the recent recordings on KZbin use a newer libretto that, in my opinion, removed so much of the poetry of this older version. The list above is missing "For he shall give his angels charge over thee" after "Elijah! get thee hence"

What happens in a post-Christian world 😭. For reference check out the new Narnia movies vs the BBC series from the 70’s OR the ‘new’ Brideshead movie... dreck

No, he's mine! >=( Haha jk. =P I'm so happy that he is loved by many. Everything about Mendelssohn is worthy of our love: his music, his character, his other talents.

Seems the only thing that has kept Elias from being a favorite among perennial favorites for the last century and a half, is about 40 minutes of recitative passages.(also, probably anti-semitism) Happily, Mendelssohn composed the oratorio in such a way that they are easily omitted. The live Masur/Israel Philharmonic version is nice too. Too bad Karajan never gave it a try Wagner partisan, George Bernard Shaw called it "pretty." Not pretty: beautiful and god-wrathful

Ben Kissinger Wait, what? Anti-semitic? Which numbers from Elias are anti-semitic? And yes, I agree, this could and should be closer to the top pieces. However, singing in any other than German should be a sin: It takes away from the feeling of the music, they go together. I would prefer they not sing, than sing in Englisch.

La-ti-do oh, sorry, I meant against Mendelssohn (who was Lutheran)
