That lapel makes a huge difference. I feel like that grip in itself is too much of a threat for a knowledgeable top fighter to try that pass from that position, though, even with the leg dropped for bait (especially with the near pant leg gripped). Can the sweep still work even if the passer doesn't knee slice (and, say, squares up instead)?

I think you need both grips. There are other ways to acquire the second grip. You can watch a Bernardo highlight and see a bunch of ways he acquired the second grip. I think this set up is based off the train of thought of your opponent using a mid passing range so this is a setup appropriate for that. Bernardo often used setups when his opponent was using closer passing or he would dive in deeper himself. The Mendes brothers didn’t really play close range or deep half guards. So it makes sense the would have set ups from this range.
