I have never heard this song without getting choked up and chills at the part when Taylor sings "and if I didn't know better, I'd think you were singing to me now" and her grandmother's voice comes soaring in. It's just so beautiful.

This song gets me so choked up. All of my grandparents had died by the time I was in kindergarten. I only have a few vague memories of my grandma on my mom's side. I never really had the experience of being "spoiled by grandma and grandpa." Sometimes I get a little jealous. Lol

I've been trying to convince my mother (in her mid-80s) to write out some of her childhood memories of life in the outer boroughs of NYC as a keepsake/memoir for her grandchildren. The inspiration for that request came from this song. Thanks, Taylor and Mere!

This song is so beautiful and inspiring. My best friend, who was like the sister I never had, was tragically killed 53 years ago but I have never forgotten her and how she inspired me. She has always been alive in my heart. Now at 73 and I look at the picture of her age 21, newly married and 3 months shy of finishing college…forever young. By the way, I had to tell her husband that she had been killed on that snowy, icy Illinois weather in 1971.

@@mendwithmereMy maternal grandmother is suffering from terminal cancer, and my mother has suggested that I record conversations with her about her life and then transcribe them myself. I have the first part of it, and on the next trip we are going to take to visit her, I hope to have several more parts of it. Also, I had also thought about asking her to give me her wedding ring, because I have many things that she has made specifically for me, but the ring is something that she has had for the 51 years that she has been married to my grandfather. There is a small drawback, and that is that she is a deeply religious believer, and that may make her want to give it to my grandfather before me, but trying to keep her from it.

My grandmother lived until 2019, but my grandfather passed in 2000. It was extremely hard because it was unexpected. My biggest worry was how my grandmother would cope with losing her soulmate, so we had all these long talks about him. She said that the hardest part of the day was going to bed and him not being there. She had chronic insomnia for a while. Then a friend told her she should write a letter to my grandfather to say all the things she didn’t have time to say at the end because it all happened so fast. She wrote him a letter and put it under her pillow. She told me she had a beautiful dream about him that night and her insomnia stopped. I like to think it was his way of letting her know he was okay and that she could move forward in life. This song makes me think of both of them. They’ll be forever missed.

This song makes my heart so warm and gets me emotional especially the bridge. It reminds me of my grandfather who I remember so well and lost when I was around 7. It's also a wake up call to spend more time with my grandmother who I haven't visited for a few weeks. Sometimes we're so busy with our lives that we forget about those who love us the most. EDIT thank you Mere. I called my grandmother after listening to this. I'm pretty sure it made her week 💖

“What died didn’t stay dead” Okay idk if there are any other gardeners out there but this reminds me of many plants and specifically the hibiscus. Hibiscus are so sensitive if you move them or the season changes they can shed all their leaves and look totally dead. But then if you give them some time they bud and bloom again. So many times I have had guests say “that plant looks dead throw it out” and they dont realize that soon it will bounce back. Even when you think there is no hope, you can be surprised

I really appreciate your reactions! I’ve always liked Taylor’s songs but I’ve never really read into the lyrics much. But I stumbled upon you with the You’re on your own kid reaction video and I love how honest and eloquent you are when relating to the music. And it made me appreciate Taylor’s music on a whole different level. I also like how different you are compared to a lot of swifties online who tend to focus too much on the history of Taylor and forget that Taylor is painting an imagery for all of the listeners with her songs. I find that so refreshing and I hope you will continue to do more reaction videos on Taylor and other artists ❤

I’m absolutely bawling my eyes out! I miss my grandma so so much, even though it's been 4 years. I relate so much to this song, and hearing you talk about your grandpa really brought forth a wave of memories. To me the “if I didn't know better, I’d think you were still around” is also about those moments when I think to myself ‘I haven't seen her in a while, I miss her so I should go visit!’ and then the painful memory that I can't just do that... Thank you Meredith, I’m really enjoying your analysis of these songs❤

I cannot listen to this song without crying, because I lost my grandmother a few years back and I feel like I lost time by not being with her when I could have. My grandmother used to give me lots of advice and when I lost her I didn’t know what to do. When she sings “I should’ve asked you questions, I should’ve asked you how to be” I break down in tears. And what you said about that feeling of them being there, I like to think my grandparents’ soul is in my little teddy bear, and it has been a great way for me to connect with them, even though they aren’t here anymore.Thank you for making these videos, I’m so glad you’re analyzing/reacting to Taylor songs because because she is such a clever lyricist.

This song makes me feel so so so many things. When this song was released, it was one day after the one year anniversary of my mothers passing. I remember just sitting on my bed, headphones in, sobbing. Grief is so weird sometimes, I see my mum everywhere all the time, in my siblings, in the birds chirping, in silly little phrases she’d say all the time. I’m all the way in New Zealand and I’d never dreamed I’d hear it live ever, never thought Taylor would play it live, but long story short I ended up managing to get tickets to the opening night of the eras tour, this was the first time since my mum’s passing that I truly just did something for myself and I had no idea she’d play this song. When I heard the first notes of the song I was immediately sobbing, it was like my mum was giving me and hug and telling me she was with me. Every now and then I come back to this song just to feel a bit closer to her. It so beautifully describes the complexity of missing someone so deeply.

I first heard this song last summer while driving past the freeway exit we used to take to my grandparents’ home. I was thinking of them and grieving, especially for my grandmother Marjorie. The way this song absolutely shook me to my core. I nearly pulled off the freeway from the emotions. I didn’t realize I had downloaded Taylor’s discography and I don’t think I had heard anything but Willow from Evermore. I didn’t even know that was Taylor Swift singing at first. I have never had such a powerful reaction to a song in my life. At the time I just couldn’t believe someone was singing the grief I was feeling in that exact moment I was actually feeling it and then actually naming my grandma’s name. It’s been a few years and I still hold so much grief for her. I’ve had a lot of regret about not being there for her in her final years. This song makes me cry every single time. And I am so beyond grateful that it exists and gives me such a beautiful outlet to express my grief and my love for my grandma. ❤

the first time i heard this song i instantly thought of my great grandpa who sadly passed away september of 2020 i wasn’t able to attend his funeral because it was going to be in mexico and i was younger than i am now so my mom didn’t let me go but i get when she said “and i complained the whole way there the car ride back and up the stairs” because when i was a child i didn’t necessarily hate going to his place but i found it “boring” but when i arrived i had the best times with him i also get when she says “i should’ve asked you questions i should’ve asked you how to be” because i’m going through a really tough time rn and i sometimes wonder “how would he handle this? or what would he tell me?” and it hurts to think that i’ll never get to know it broke my heart when she said “cause every scrap of you would be taken from me” it’s a difficult line to listen to when i can relate to it so much i can’t hear it without crying because every piece of him that i had is now gone i couldn’t even get a piece of his clothing because everything he used to own is in mexico with my family i just wish i could have his jacket he wore all the time or his cologne that he wore because i loved the way he smelt and sometimes i feel like he’s with me or watching over me one time i was in target with my older sister and this little old man passed by me and i got a faint sniff of his scent and he smelt so much like my great grandpa and it almost brought me to tears because it was like his way of telling me “estoy aquí mi hermosa mariposa”

I lost my grandfather right after high school, at a time where I definitely took him for granted as an adolescent even though he taught me so much about my love for music. This song brings me so much comfort and it was also comforting hearing you talk about your grandfather as well. Like you, my grandmother also did an auction and we lost so much of him that it still makes me emotional. I'm wondering if the "clever" & "polite" lyrics are actually words of advice she (Marjorie) gave . . . 🥹

I believe there’s no such thing as coincidence. I’m not sure if you have heard of or have any knowledge about the Akashic Records but I guarantee if you had someone open them for you that your Grandpa would come Thru. I lost my Dad in April this year and I had my first experience with the records in June and my Dad was basically busting the door down with messages to me. It was so so so comforting and unbelievable and just perfect. 🥹
