Thank you Ruth Ann. My sister just passed and I helped my niece clean out her house. She had a crock pot that I think was from the 70s. My niece was going to donate it to a thrift store. I snagged it up and she said “what do you want that old thing for?”. I told her it will outlast the newer one I have now and (like you said) it won’t burn food. Plus I remember when they first came out 🥰. The older things work the best! I appreciate you - God bless you.

@@Anita3kidsS. You can start with just a big pot. Water bath. Some put a towel at the bottom. You already have both. One set of canning glass,12, comes with lid and rings. Walmart used to have that for 11.97. Now, it is more, but still doable. Can tomatoes. Acidic foods in the water bath. Some peopel even can meat, using water bath, but that take's, at least 3 hours of simmering. Where there is a will, there is a way. lol.

I'm 64 now. I remember when my 2nd great-grandmother was alive (she lived until she was 108 (Edit; born in the 1800s - end edit), she met my 2 children) and taught me to cook from scratch when I was 4 or 5. And at times, that was bare necessity/this is all I have on hand kind of cooking/baking... just to show me different meals from her childhood, etc. I would stay with her and Grandpa over the weekends. I helped in the kitchen including clean up. I learned and at times I wasn't interested but paid attention. She died when I was in my late 20s. It's now in my blood to cook from scratch with as near organic as I can get. It's a dying-out tradition to can foods for long-term storage or whip up things ahead for prep for the following week and for that day. Thanks for reading and I am going to make these potatoes!!

This made me shed some tears. I’m 40 and came later in my moms life. She was the youngest of 7. She was sick most of my life so I learned wisdom from my aunts. Anyhow, my aunts and grandma were the ones who taught me to cook from scratch w whatever was on hand. My grandma born in 1908 had all her kids during the early start of the depression. They always said they were so poor they never could tell the depression had happened. Grandma saved everything and always had a milk goat. My much older aunt just passed away several years back (90s) and I long for her comforting hand and wisdom. You mention that this is a dying art. It truly is. Even the people who are influencers and trying to revieve the old ways…they don’t get it. There’s quarks and tricks that died along side our grandparents. Subtle things. It was truly an art form and each person an artist w their own style. I miss my aunt dearly.

That sausage so reminds me of dinners at my Grandma's in PA. She lived in an Amish area so we have a lot of similar traditions. Always had it with egg which was a cross between a pancake and scrambled eggs. Served up with lots of butter and syrup or apple butter. Such good comfort food for dinner. Dessert was her canned peaches that I would help can. Such good memories.

Thank you for the info on the crockpots and roasters and also the big potato recipe. I actually was most interested in the Pa. Style sausage. I didn't know what to ask for all these years. I'm 70 and my grandpa used to do all the butchering for the community when I was growing up. I just knew this sausage as salt and pepper so no one had any idea what it was. Now I have relocated and do not live far from PA I may have a little better luck finding something like I remember. Many thanks for that! I'm excited.

I absolutely agree about the low setting on modern crockpots cooking too hot. I didn't know why, but thank you for letting us know! I'm going to go to goodwill and thrift stores to try and see if I can find a vintage one. I'm a single working mom and a true low setting can help to ensure that dinner is ready and not overcooked by the time we all get home. For those who have a modern crockpot, I wonder if you could plug it into a timer so it cycles on and off. But I would also use one of those oven thermometers with a probe to make sure it stays in the safety zone. (I think some of them can send an alert to your phone.) The other thought I had was to put some sort of insulation between the heating element and the pot. I know people sometimes add water to the inside of their roasters. Just some ideas - has anyone tried something similar? And thanks Ruth Ann! You always have wonderful tips.
@NoOneUKnow-c3y8 ай бұрын
This explains why I have a keep warm, low and high on my crockpot and the keep warm is hotter than the low on the newer one. I also have an old time crockpot and prefer to use it over my newer one because like you say, it cooks better, it has a low and a high setting only. I was gifted a new roaster and it went out within just a few uses and I found that I really liked it for canning. I did purchase another one from a thrift store to get an older model and I love it even more than the one that I had been given. They built things to last in longer in the 70 and 80's in my opinion. Things seem more disposable and cheap these days.

I love all your videos including the music. You are a blast to watch and I look forward to watching you again. I love gardening and canning but dont do as much anymore since my children are grown. You inpire me to start back up again to teach my grandchildren the lost art of gardening and canning. God bless you RuthAnn

@shelbaforbes5502 You might enjoy the Little Village Homestead YT channel. She loves to garden, can and do many things with food. I think she is a virtual encyclopedia of all things cooking and baking. She is also a very good teacher. 😊 ❤

There are three cookbooks on Amerzon (U.K.) one called hope Mennonite cookbook plus two others. Cheese and potatoes sounds good. Yum. 😊😊

Thank you for confirming this! I always wondered why my slow cooker cooks fast, thinking it was just the model, which is a Hamilton Beach. The one I have was purchased around the mid 90's, based on the one you've shown that looks to be a late 60's to mid 70's model.

Hmmm 🤔. My newer crockpot has a "warm " setting. I'm going to need to fill it with water and take its temp after several hours to see what exactly might happen with that setting.

Did you ever do that? If so, what was the temperature?

Great instructions! I can't wait to make some wedding potatoes (in my vintage crockpot) for my family 😊

Great knowledge & recipe! I get older cookers from thrift stores because they have better quality materials, too. I’m 71 so I know the difference of old versus new😅 Blessings 🤗🇨🇦

Thank you, RuthAnn. I'm going to try this recipe. I also live in a Mennonite neighborhood. That's where I go for my dry baking goods , spices, and other dry goods. It is so true about the old models crockpot. Everything does burns.
@spmarsh37478 ай бұрын
Thank you Ruthann, I didn’t understand why I was burning simple crockpot recipes, I thought my crockpot ran hot so I learned to check my food halfway through the indicated cook time as the food was usually done at that point. I’m soooo sorry I didn’t keep my Mom’s crockpot. Thank you for this info and all your delicious recipes. God bless you and your family!

On you graters... pull your drawers out and look for them. I lost a cheese grater that way it fell over the drawer and down into the bottom of the cabinet. Good luck! Thanks for your videos!

That explains so much! My crock pot from when we got married almost 24 years ago died. I got a new one and everything cooks so much faster and I've burned things that I've never burned before.

Wow now I know why my crockpots run differently. Thanks as always so helpful. I’ll be using my older one more often. Could you do a recipe in the insta pot. I received one for Christmas and don’t know how to use. Thank you May you and your family continue to be Blessed

I love my instapot. Here's what I do with mine. Boiled Eggs, chicken frozen or thawed, roast are excellent in the instapot. You can find recipes for anything I mentioned online, with Google, Instagram, KZbin 😊. Between my instapot and my air fryer. Don't know what I would do without these appliances. Hope that helped a little 😊
