Great stuff, Ash! I remember seeing an episode of Downton Abbey, where the Hugh Bonneville character was wearing a very fetching paisley silk lined dressing gown. Curious, I did in fact look at New & Lingwood's shop. Where you could pick up a very nice example for about £3500. It is a superb example of craftsmanship, fabric, and tailoring. But, to be honest, I just cannot imagine a set of circumstances where I would want to wear it. Certainly not in public (perish the thought!). And not even in private. I wouldn't eat breakfast in it. I wouldn't shave in it. It's a gorgeous article of clothing that just doesn't fit into just about any 21st century lifestyle. We don't have valets. We do have central heating. Bathrobes are another matter. And here I think a modern gentleman will get good mileage from a good-quality cotton terry bathrobe. The perfect garment to wear while shaving or brushing one's teeth, fresh from the shower or bath. White is a good colour choice, but challenging in the long run, to keep immaculate. And a dingy bathrobe is a sorry sight indeed.

The price would also be prohibitive for most people. It's more than I've ever spent on a car.....
@vrdrew63
@vrdrew63 2 ай бұрын
@@KlausKokholmPetersen : I think prohibitive is the point. It's obviously not a garment, or a shop, that is affordable for the vast, vast majority of men. But we have to keep in mind we live in a world where there are a lot of people who have almost unbelievable amounts of wealth. There are something like 30,000 centi millionaires in the world. (That's people with a net worth of more than $100 million.) These are people who buy $8000 first class airline seats, if indeed they don't pay the $60,000-$70,000 to charter a private jet to fly them across the Atlantic. And from their perspective, a $5000 dressing gown is a mild indulgence. And I'm sure that New & Lingwood sells a couple dozen such gowns every month. The world has changed since the days of "Downton Abbey." The very rich don't live in draughty old castles any more. They don't employ armies of servants. They don't need to. They get by very well with a handful of highly-trusted, closely-vetted, highly-paid professionals. But every once in a while one of these wealthy men decides he'd like to look like a pre-war English aristocrat, at least in private. (And who can blame him?) So he buys a very expensive New & Lingwood dressing gown.

I found a silk dressing gown in a vintage store that has my monogram-three letters and all! (At least, it looks like my monogram.) That's my favorite piece of loungewear. Men throughout history have often had special affection for their loungewear. Fred Astaire was buried in his favorite smoking jacket. Many aristocratic men, when being painted for their primary portrait, would choose to be pictured in their preferred dressing gown. (Alliteration intentional.) I've never heard of lounge gowns. Is this a British thing? Either way, the definitions-along with the "house coat"-are intuitive for their name. The dressing gown/house coat is dressy and meant to be worn around the house, while a bathrobe is for drying off after a bath. My dressing gown costs something like twenty dollars to dry clean. Do be prepared for this! I still find it to be a worthwhile item. Look at antique or vintage stores, and be prepared to spend around one hundred dollars (seventy-seven pounds) on them. Rules about loungewear aren't particularly strict. Super-loud garments, monograms, and silly accessories are all fine because what a man wears in the comfort of his own home is his and only his business.

" that has my monogram-three letters and all!" That's *awesome* - I had to get a new one, somewhat expensive, though nothing remotely on a New & Lingwood scale, to have my initials embroidered. But let's face it: I just don't have the physique for true vintage items, I'm both somewhat chubby *and,* what's worse, tall - this has already led to me wearing mostly made-to-measure clothing since even the more diverse European sizing in "tall", "normal" and "chubby" (paraphrasing here😆) offers no combination that would properly fit me without substantial correction tailoring and it's probably more price neutral to go straight to MtM... mopemope🤣 Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

I have a thin cotton dressing gown in navy blue with a small white paisley pattern, which I wear most evenings in the warm summer months. I also have a vintage wool dressing gown in beige with a green windowpane stripe and a shawl collar that I wear on winter mornings or evenings when lounging in front of the fireplace. Both are extremely comfortable, yet elegant. -And I'm not embarrassed to answer the doorbell either early in the morning or late at night when wearing one of these robes.

You may well be the best chap to advise me on a tricky conundrum. What would be the latest time that it would still be considered acceptable to be wearing ones favourite dressing gown in Tesco on those days when one cashes ones dole giro? One would be mortified to be considered mangénue (or indeed ingénue) as it is bad enough being forced to rise at the crack of noon once per fortnight after all...

Ha ha…. Another great video. Have owned a variation of all three and always thought of them as bath robes, including a lavishly embroidered silk robe from Chinatown in New York - which I now know should have been set aside and used as a dressing gown. Probably would not have gone well with a fez however.

Those dressing gowns look great! But thanks to central heating, lined and padded sounds a bit like overkill. My lounge gown is plenty warm enough for me. I tweaked it a bit by adding two buttons in the front to close it more securely. A Kimono looks tempting, too. And appearantly easy enough to sew yourself, so that might be a nice project if I find a pretty pice of silk for a reasonable price.

Ash - I must correct you as there is now a 4th tier not covered here. At midday in our local supermarket we have 'chavs' resplendent in pyjamas/ onesies, wearing slippers. I am led to believe this helps them tell the time, in place of a wristwatch.

See Sir Hugh Heffner! A smoking jacket is a men's lounge jacket that was originally designed for smoking tobacco. It originated in Britain in the 1870s and evolved from the long dressing gown as smoking became popular among the European aristocracy in the 19th century. The jacket's main purpose was to protect the wearer's clothing from tobacco smoke odors and to keep them warm and comfortable while smoking.

It's been around for a *long* time, as one would expect from such a simple hat, but it's entered western consciousness starting with the Ottoman army's headgear, introduced the early 19th century, encountered during the much romanticised Greek War of Independence (1821-1829). It truly entered western dress as a "home-wear-hat" in the later parts of the 19th and the ante-bellum 20th century following the many, today one would say "pop-cultural", orientalist crazes of public fascination with "the Orient". And since it's not coded into any of the western social codes for when and what hat to wear, except under the label "exotic foreign hats seen on exotic foreigners", it became a preferred item for home-wear. And yes, the cheaper ones tend to look "clownish" but the "proper" ones really don't - and as a German with many Turkish friends I associate it more with the Ottoman Empire than anything else, but this is no criticism, just a different base of perception!^^ Best regards Raoul G.
