Hi Rita and Melissa. You are not alone! Unfortunately many women experience similar symptoms. It can be a very debilitating condition. I recommend that you have your neck and brainstem assessed to see if there is any fault there, as this is usually a treatable condition. Unfortunately, as you pointed out, Rita, over the counter medications often don't help, and a lot of prescription medications are not a lot better.

This is the worst of periods! Not the bleeding or cramps, This! Recently had this happen and I'm only 20. Started off with severe dizziness, eye problems happened, severe moods swings that messed with my depression, really bad migraine that switched sides (first time ever having a migraine), heat Intolerance/hot flashes, sensitivity to light and red eyes. Scared me to death! Google popped up numerous things that scared me more! Countless trips to docters and hospitals for 2 weeks straight! Finally once the pain ended and everything went back to normal now again it's the same thing and it's only been about 3 weeks since the last attack. We just never catch a break!

I would assume the stress I'm going through (taking care of my sick mother who had surgery and my grandma who's on her last stage of dementia) would be the cause. I haven't missed any periods and they're on time, I guess it's just low estrogen because the headaches do go away during the period it's just before. Heat intolerance could also be a thyroid problem, (been scared of having graves disease since it's very common in 20yr olds). Plus it's very hot here outside so yeah. If it does it next month I'll go to the doctor. Thankfully the headache and all is gone, just dealing with eye problems (blurry and floaters) but I am slightly nearsighted so it could be the problem.

Absolutely. The brainstem is part of just about every process in your body, to some extent. Migraines can cause all sorts of unusual symptoms, and some are not well documented. Just eat three or four soaked almonds in the morning because you have a magnesium deficiency because you are getting headaches in your periods, and also take greens or iron and magnesium supplements you can take also, and be in the sun for some time in the morning for vitamin D. I know you are not taking any kind of sunlight and any kind of vitamin D, and you are doing a very stressful job, so do the techniques of reducing stress and build your mindset like that, so you do not have to stress all day, and do a physical activity in the evening or in the morning, it just can be a walk, or simply 10 minutes stretches, or playing badminton, bicycling, anything, but do it for one month, and your next period will be so calm, and you do not have to cry for a headache, it's not hormonal, it's not for estrogen, whatever, it's about your health. It occurs once in every month during or after my periods. It will last many hours and I feel sick and nausea. During that time, light or sound makes it worse. Also even though it lasts many hours when I vomit it goes away eventually. After a hot bath it's all over. But I'm not sure whether it is migraine or not🤷♀️
@thorasaylor50753 жыл бұрын
It could possibly be. When I get my migraines (always with my period - before or during), I get an aura (my warning symptom), and then the migraine. I become sensitive to light and sound, and typically also get nauseous, resulting in vomiting. It usually lasts 4-6 hours, counting the time that I rest/sleep. Sometimes 8. The day afterwards my head will not hurt, but sudden head movements to the right or left make the back of my head hurt. Same goes if I jump, run, or bend down. By the third day, (typically) I am fully recovered. Hope this helps!

Thanks for identifying cause. Could you also pls tell how to desensitize the brainstem? And why it became sensitive in 30s
@brisbaneheadacheandmigrain3863 Жыл бұрын
@babyboy9255 Thank you for your question! The brainstem is desensitized with gentle hands-on treatment. This can be done by a Watson-trained headache clinician. First they will have to assess the first three vertebrae of your neck to determine which segments could be causing increased sensitivity of the brainstem. From here they can then create an appropriate treatment plan. In terms of what could cause the sensitivity, it can occur as a result of changes in your lifestyle (e.g. posture, work duties), injuries to the head or neck (e.g. whiplash, concussions) or if you had any illnesses around your 30's. Is there anything like this that may have changed or occurred in your 30's?

Hi Lecia, Thanks for your question. No, this isn't the same as chiropractic treatment. It is more like what a physiotherapist would perform, but is a little more specialised. Thankyou for this video! This is so helpful! I have a question for you- over the years I noticed that my neck has become so sensitive to even physical posture and exercise that a tug triggers a migraine or a knot in the shoulder also triggers a migraine. I usually get migraines at teh beginning of the period and at times 3 -5 days before now but in the beginning when I had no idea what was going on, and my stress levels were very high i used to get them all the time. So questions is - is it possible to have the brainstem become eventually sensitive to the physical musles too? and is it reversible?
@MascaratoMidnight3 жыл бұрын
I dont have an answer for that question but I know my neck always hurts from migraine and I have a lot of trigger points there. I wish he would have given more info on how to correct that. I get botox for my migraines and all the needling in those trigger points is a great relief.
@brisbaneheadacheandmigrain38633 жыл бұрын
The short answer to both of those questions is yes. Hormones act as triggers when people experience a menstrual migraine. Stress is also a common releaser of hormones, so the same can happen. With regards to muscles, they become tight and start pulling on the vertebrae in a way that could also be a trigger for you. Those muscles can be treated through exercise and massage to relax them. This should hopefully help a bit. For the hormones, obviously we can't stop hormonal changes, so that is where treating that sensitised brainstem is so important.

I only watched it once, but it sounded like he said vertebrae in the neck being misaligned. If that's a cause, then chiropractic adjustments may be helpful. Many people get relief from headaches through chiropractic adjustments. I personally don't like the method of adjustment involving swift turning, so I ask for the activator to be used. It's a little spring-loaded device. My mother didn't like it, she said it made her feel nauseated. But each person is different.
@brisbaneheadacheandmigrain38632 жыл бұрын
Hi Wen, thanks for your comment. The vertebrae in the neck actually don't misalign. Chiropractic treatment can indeed help temporarily relieve the symptoms of a headache or migraine. To properly address the primary cause of the migraines, a headache & migraine clinician is the best option, as they can do a thorough assessment of the neck and brainstem. I hope this helps! Please feel free to ask any questions.

If I get these migraines, and am on a birth control pill (which majorly helps preventing them) should I still get my neck checked out?
@brisbaneheadacheandmigrain38632 жыл бұрын
Hi Thora, thank you for your question. It is normally recommended to get your neck and brainstem assessed so that, in the future, if you decide to cease taking the birth control pill, your migraines have less chance of coming back. I hope this helps! Please feel free to get in touch if you have more questions!

That's fantastic that you've found relief from giving up those two things. It always amazes me how often caffeine and alcohol can have an effect on migraines, and it's not always a bad effect. Many people find that caffeine in particular can help to ease their migraine.

Can i ask? What type of menstrual migraine i have if before 2 to 3 days before my period, i experiencing a symptoms (menstrualmigraine) then after that the moment my period start i experiencing it again for almost 3 days(the whole day)? Is it really normal? (I'm sorry for my English grammar)
@brisbaneheadacheandmigrain38632 жыл бұрын
Hi x 블링크트레저, thanks for your question. That is quite normal for menstrual migraines. Normally people will get symptoms of a menstrual migraine the first 1-2 days before the first day of their period or 1-2 days starting from the day of the first period. And then this can continue last from a few hours up to a few days depending on the individual. If you only get migraines during your menstrual cycle, you're more likely to have pure menstrual migraine. However, if you get migraines around other times of the year (unrelated to your menstrual cycle) you're more likely to have menstrual-related migraines

when i was 49, ive got a coil fitted for heavy menstruation and severe migraines with nauseaand pain from the back scull and neck. After 3-4 months i got much more less pains and menstruation. Now one year later, i had a severe migraine with nausea again, although with no menstruation, coming out of nowhere although it was away for months. im taking Zolmatriptans, as a back up. Can you please explain, if im still peri menopausal or In menopause? And what to do about it? thank you.
@brisbaneheadacheandmigrain38632 жыл бұрын
Hi Ann, I'm sorry to hear you've been experiencing this. You may have to discuss the correlation to menopause with your GP as they'd be able to do more thorough assessments for this. In terms of the sudden onset of migraines and nausea again- I'd also recommend discussing this with your GP to see if there is are any underlying conditions that caused this. If there are no other causes, it may be because of an issue in the neck and brainstem that has caused the migraines to come on again- for this, you would benefit from seeing a headache clinician. I hope this helps! Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

Hi Jayne, the type of specialist you can seek is a Watsons Headache Practitioner. The type of assessment and treatment method used is called the Watsons method, where the neck and brainstem are assessed to see if that's what's causing your headaches or migraines.

@brisbaneheadacheandmigrain38632 жыл бұрын
Hi Diane, thanks very much for your comment. There are likely some short term remedies that your GP or Pharmacist may be able to give you more information about. However, the best long term solution for menstrual migraines often is to have the first three vertebrae of your neck assessed and treated.

For some, a hysterectomy may help. However, it is definitely not a guarantee, and if you are considering this, you should have a chat to your local doctor about what your options are. We have seen many patients that have been promised pain relief if they had a hysterectomy, only to find that the migraines persist. It is understandably a difficult condition, and it sounds like you've been suffering quite a lot to start considering those sorts of treatments. Hopefully you find the help you need!
