I had similar experiences as this guy. I'm a 32 year old guy. When I caught it around age 25, I reexamined my relationship to sex. I had been into "free love" and casual sex, if I'm being honest. It forced me to think about what sex and relationships really are. I had seen them from a hedonistic perspective, but I started thinking from a biological perspective. I was similar to someone who reexamines their relationship to food, who starts seeing it as fuel rather than fun. I also thought I would have a better shot at marriage than at casual relationships, because if we're married, catching it wouldn't matter for her as much... Although I'm not sure that logic is accurate, it did cross my mind. Most of all, catching it showed me I was being risky, and it made me appreciate serious relationships much more. I became more sexually conservative and monogamous-minded. I don't want to blame others for my mistakes, nor to prescribe a single lifestyle for everyone... But I think modern culture (post-sexual revolution) downplays the risks of sex. People in serious relationships have better and more frequent sex on average. To put it bluntly, using condoms is not as fun, but neither is having kids with the wrong person, so the solution is a relationship with someone stable and good for you. Culture used to encourage people away from hedonistic casual sex and towards committed monogamous relationships which were probably more fulfilling on average than post-sexual-revolution hookups. The "do whatever you want" attitude of society is a bit like a negligent parent who lets their kids play in the street.

I will say that free love and sexual revolutions have done a lot for groups stigmatized for their sexual behaviors. I do agree that the risks of sex unfortunately were downplayed. The source, in my opinion, was because most modern cultures still feel a great amount of shame about sex. Therefore, that shame is based in ignorance, myths, education... all leading to negative health risks. You have to tell society not to shame about sex rather than to have it aimlessly, without abandon. Once you educate how to not shame, you allow those who want to have "riskier" encounters to do so with others who consent to the same risks.
