I spent years refusing medication because of John MacArthur's teachings on mental illness. I ultimately spiraled down into Schizoaffective disorder. I couldn't read my Bible and understand it anymore my hallucinations and delusions were so bad. I finally got hospitalized and through a court order was forcibly medicated. Within 3 weeks my symptoms were gone and I could understand my Bible again. I feel so sympathetic for people affected negatively by Biblical Counseling.

That is really sad Barbara. I am so sorry that happened to you. A relative of mine has completed his "Bachelor of Biblical Counselling" course at the Masters College. I looked at the curriculum. It is absolutely scary that people are going out giving glib simplistic bible answers to very complex difficult issues in the lives of people. There are zero courses on mental illness, zero courses on dealing with trauma, family systems etc and only one (1) course on psychology basically saying that psychology is secular and evil and blah blah blah... Scary. It should be illegal in my opinion. Read the book of Job and what God thought of Job's friends, that is what is going on. So called "Biblical Counselling" really needs to be called out, it is damaging people.

Sadly, that's true of the majority of churches. I've been blessed, that I've found a church where the pastor has a testimony that we are flawed in different ways & has walked a mile in or more in my shoes. He understands that we can have the diagnosis we do and that doesn't take away our belief in Christ let alone our salvation. These churches exist, we as God's children must prayerfully ask to lead to one that does have a pastor and elders that accept us as we are and pray for us and help us find the help we need as long as we ask and the leadership is able it's a good thing.

I suffer with Complex post traumatic stress and social anxiety and I’m currently under the adult mental health crisis team after very close calls to ending my life over the last few weeks. I don’t want to die, I just want the depression, pain, trauma and flashbacks to end as I’ve suffered with it since I was a child. I have a really close relationship with Jesus and a strong faith but unfortunately when I get this low is SO hard to take the scriptures in and I end up feeling really guilty😞 my Dr has started me on an antidepressant but quite a few of my closest friends who work for the church keeps telling me that God would Not want me taking them! And now I feel a failure as a Christian. I’m having a few nasty side effects from the medication and they say that’s proof God doesn’t want a child of God putting that rubbish into my body and I need to really step out in faith and trust that God will heal me. I actually stopped going to church 4yrs ago as if I ever mention I needed prayer for feeling anxious or I’d been having suicidal feelings, as I was being prayed for they would be telling satan to leave me alone! And I was to trust God more and rise up into who God made me to be. It always left me in a worse state than before and again I’d end up feeling guilty and a failure. I ended up not telling anyone in church how I felt anymore and it makes me feel really sad that I’m sure so many others in church are struggling with their mental health yet there’s such a stigma about it. Thanks for the great talk it really made a lot of sense and I appreciate those Christian’s also who were asking the important questions that many choose to avoid 🙏🏼❤️

I am a brazilian medical student and Christian, I also want to be a psychiatrist, but the people in my social circles are against: my family, friends and brothers in the church. I loved the video, I believe there are psychiatric illnesses that have something to do with sin, but there are others that don't, and I believe there should be more Christian doctors and psychologists to be salt in this world. Thank you Dr. Jonathan Lee for the excellent talk, God bless you and your family , so that your patients can be healed and know God through your kindness, love and empathy with them.

I'm Brazilian too and suffer from Avoidant Personality Disorder. I inherited from my dad who had the same mental illness. We live in a fallen world, some have heart condition, some were born without a limb and some have psychological issues. We will only be made whole free from sin and pain when we get our new glorious body. I can't wait! ♡

Think of the difference between a “spiritual” dis-ease and a physical disease. If a criminal stabs me in the head and my brain is injured, it iss physical issue. If I am born with a brain defect, it is a physical problem. If I practice anger, bitterness, and revenge and have nightmares, headaches, and bad dreams it is a spiritual problem that requires confession, repentance, and prayers. Many mental dis-eases are spiritual and many are physical in origin. A schizophrenic with a brain dysfunction will not be healed by deliverance. A bitter, unforgiving man will not be healed with medicine. It is simple.

Thank you for admitting when you don’t know the answer. I work in a mental health profession and am by no means as educated as you are, but I have a heart for people who experience this type of distress. The mind is a physical organ. Due to sin, it is susceptible to disease as is any other organ. In imaging of the brain in the case of schizophrenia for example, you can see the physical effects. But some of these mental disorders- anxiety and depression- are so hard to parse out! What is anxiety’s ultimate fear? It is usually death. And what is depression’s hallmark? Emptiness and meaninglessness. (Maybe I’m coming from a more existential approach with this, and I am probably in need of some educating here). These are things the gospel addresses in full. When you presented Aaron beck’s cognitive distortions, those are not distortions, but realities of a person without the hope of Jesus. Have we considered that those with anxiety and depression might be gifted in their sensitivity- gifted in their ability to know where their hope is lacking? Whereas those who lack that sensitivity lead their life on the surface and never really consider that death will happen and that apart from Jesus there is no hope? These are just some thoughts on a topic that is so complex, I’m not going to even pretend I have the answers. I’m afraid though, that to be satisfied with no answers would be highly dangerous. We must act and we must ask for the discernment of the Holy Spirit in every step of the way.

Great video! I mean...as a Christian, I do not deny the involvement of the devil in capitalizing on the destruction of mental illness in the lives of those affected, but truth be told, mental illnesses are, in fact, illnesses. They should be addressed by clinically trained professionals and often need to be treated with psychiatric medicine. I have bipolar disorder type 1, and for years I tried to work through my mood swings via prayer, Scriptural deep dives, and support from my fellow believers, but in the end, every time I tapered off my meds, the main highs and depressive lows returned with a vengeance almost overnight. It's just an unfortunate reality. Mental illness is, in part, simply a byproduct of this fallen and broken world in which we live. We can not expect to just circumnavigate the issue with hope and wishful thoughts alone. The same is true with addiction, and those that claim otherwise clearly haven't been in the throws of it. I battle both (comorbidity/ dual diagnosis), and it is truly a life-claiming diabolical combination if not addressed professionally...and PROMPTLY!

After After being diagnosed with some DSM-5 diagnosis, I had to realize, there are organic reasons. For me, about the age of 8 I tumbled down 50 feet of cement steps, so, I take two prescriptions that help. I still read my Bible and have my quite time with God, I don't argue with people who haven't walked a mile in my shoes, when they tell me I should put all my trust in God. Yeah, I do and I still have depression, diagnosed with ADHD, bipolar. Some people are just going to live legalistic and that's their problem.

I struggle too There’s no words Christian church teaching tends to make it worse. (Pray more etc) I pray a lot all day I love God it’s not the problem. I’m serious okay it’s not lack of the Word or lack of time with God. People assume that. They are wrong. Most of the people I know that self harm or hear voices, trust me, they are praying and reading the bible more then anyone!!! A lot of friends I lost to suicide stayed up all night every night praying and seeking God. They were at every conference. The best healing I have found is just finding family in the church. People you can trust and don’t judge you. It’s messed up though And very very sad God is good. He will make it right oneday even if it is eternity

Crypto teddy bear little1 Im sorry for you that no one has responded to you directly about your concerns (especially from with the church or from a Christian perspective) i do not identlfy as a Christian but am definitely one who knows love and am very empathetic especially as one diagnosed with bipolar 2 to others with mood disabilities or challenges. Though the root of some issues may be spiritual, if you have a sore throat and fever you dont seek out a pastor you go to a Dr. As well, adressing of psychological issues should be done by a mental health professional, not neccessrily a psychiatrist...there are PMHNPs (psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners) who are less intimidating, less expensive, and more available who are also able to diagnose conditions and prescribe often life saving medications. They are not there for counseling other than to assess medication needs but are caring and compassionate just the same. Opening up ones mind to the realization that not only Christians can impart love to other human beings can be very helpful. Thanks for expressing your feelings and concern for others and i hope you never loose another friend to suicide.

Hi, crypto teddy bear little 1 I was there in the same situation 3 -4 yrs ago and i can't even describe what i was going through ,i used to thought of suicide everyday but only thing kept me alive was that god will make everything alright and suicide is sin😅(strange but true)..there were so many instances where i get angry thinking that why God is not helping me but when i came to my senses i ask god for forgiveness and continue trusting him even though there was no hope for light.i was studying in highschool and staying away from my home at that time and i used to visit my home only on the holidays and on several times when i was at home miraculously my pastor prayed for me for the same struggles i had even though I never mentioned it to anyone and i was very good at hiding them..he even came to our home and prayed for me specifically for the same thought process i had, i really believe that God communicated that to him in spirit and i started to believe in God strongly..it really helped me to come out of it..i am really great now and i don't have depression any longer those triggers which i used to fear they don't affect anymore although sometimes i get anxiety but it is nothing compared to where I have been ...i am only trying to tell u that even though it seems really really difficult and it seems like u will never get out of it plz just keep believing in God with all ur heart and pray to him he is faithful and he will change the situation,do something which will improve ur mood ( something like exercise)it helps too..i hope it may help you a little bit..

I read a book last year that really moved me on this subject of being Christian and dealing with clinical mental illness. The author wrote about how mental illness is the only clinical illness where the church will actively tell you that it isn’t a real disease and that your faith isn’t strong enough. The church would never in a million years say to someone with cancer “oh your faith just isn’t strong enough, it’s the devil. You don’t need chemo just pray more wind fast”. That part really hit me hard because it’s so true.

I LOVE your example of eating a burrito! 1 Kings 19 has Elijah running for his life from Jezebel and he says to God, “Enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers” (vs 4). He takes a nap, eats some bread, rests some more then travels forty days and nights then experiences God! Surely, this is a similar reference to God wanting us to think through our situations with an eye to caring about our bodies, brains, and minds!

Excellent! Best video on the subject I've heard. I love how Dr. Lee ties together the amazing complexities of God's created universe with the complexities of the human brain. Gentle opposition to the shame-based counseling that often happens in pastor's offices. Great support for our brothers and sisters sitting beside us in church who are often suffering in the silence of stigma. I wish there were more Christians called to the healing art of psychiatry.

As a man of Faith I also have Honours degree in Psychology. I was told by well meaning people of Faith, that it would deconstruct my faith. It's done the absolute opposite it built me and others up more. I found a ton of psychological principles already outlined in the bible. Science, like religion is a search for truth and knowledge. Faith led me to science, science led me back to faith and gave me the extra proof most are seeking. Both address different questions. However both address the same issues man's search for truth in all its forms, knowledge and meaning. I love God with all my heart, soul and mind. Funny what happens when you let God move in directions you thought or have been told thats a no go area. God uses all sorts of people places and things to achieve his plans and purpose. Never be afraid to step of the well trodden path. What would have happened if Jesus said sorry "I will just keep doing what we have always done". Peace and love ....let the light in.

As a Born Again Christian Conservative myself & somebody who experienced trauma in the first half of my life I can tell you that mental illness does exist and I strongly believe there needs to be a new push by Christian Psychiatrists to introduce Vitamins, Natural & Herbal Medicine & Exercise & Physical Fitness & Physical & Occupational therapy & Eating healthy well balanced nutritious meals which would include Natural & Organic foods as treatment options for Christians & People with mental illness in addition to prayer & reading the bible since many of the prescription drugs & prescription Psychiatric drugs have proven they can do more harm than good because of their devastating side affects plus I also think Neurologists, Psychiatrists & Psychologists need to work more closely together when treating the many different symptoms of the mind & brain what I don't like is when Psychiatry & Psychology is weaponized by Governments & that includes The U.S. Government Deep State Shadow Government, Political Parties & Politicians to conduct mind control operations on the mass population & attempts to silence & squash political dissent!!!

I train Lay persons, including Ministers who are laity in terms of therapy, how to minister life and peace to hurting persons. The single greatest positive intervention we can offer a person with emotional distress is Love and the Fruit of the Spirit. The greatest IS love. If Christians treat the distressed with respect, empathy, and warmth those who are suffering will get better over time. The addition of Cognitive Therapy is great and the two together are powerful. I think that a mixture is best because going to counseling makes you aware of the behaviors that is occurring in your head but it's not taking part in helping solve the problems that are going on in your head. Also taking medication to allow the control of your hormones in the body will help you. By the way science is a virtue but somethings are bound by human limitations and God can help by healing beyond those limitations. That's what he is there for. When you mix them together you get the best of both worlds. He's there to help.

I have been a Christian for many years and I have come to realise that both secular counselling and so called christian counselling with the christian psychology attached to it has never helped me. I have DID/SRA and have attended and seen many counselors.I dont go to church anymore. I try to be the church that Jesus really wanted in the first place. Last year I was delivered from over 65 plus spirits that was attached to my alters. I was hopeful that everything would be ok . I am still on my journey of healing but I want you to know the power of the true Gospel sets everyone free.If you choose to do these things >Accept- Believe-commit. Man always wants to take the seat away from the creator. He made us in his image ,and knows all things. We do not. I was on a lot off drugs once, God delivered me off all of them. I would never recommend any true born again christian to take medications. The word of God is alive and active sharper than any double- edged sword, it penetrates even to the dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4v12. Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is-his good, pleasing and perfect will Romans 12v2.We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God , and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10v5. equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in you what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.Hebrews 13 v 21. But God chose the foolish things of this world to shame the wise; God Chose the weak things of this world to shame the strong.1 Corinthians 1:27. for they are life to those who find them and health to ones"s whole body. Proverbs 4:22. The thief comes to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10v10. This is real medication for the believer and non-believer. The power of the Gospel has not changed or out of date in this time zone. I am not saying that christians should not seek help with mental illness. But rather be guided to trust in a awesome God that sent his son into the world to save us from sin and destruction . If someone is in need of Mental help lets first really inquire of the LORD and get his plan of attack for that situation , before putting them on psychotic medications which will prevent them from hearing the Holy Spirit trying to give direction and counsel in their lives. This is the delima I have with such medications. Cognitive Behavior Therapy ---. Can not save the soul. Jesus came to heal and deliver and save. Positive thoughts can help however they will never bring lasting change. We as christians need to show love compassion and understanding always. However the Gospel is both love and justice . If we believe God's Word and act on it and trust in his promises : then we would see many christians lives changed, . the BLOOD of JESUS is enough to cleanse you from all unrighteousness and set you totally free. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man/women .I put the ways off child hood behind me. 1 Cor 13 v11. The LORD your GOD will drive out those nations before you, little by little. You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you. Deuteronomy 7:22. I will leave this with you. The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because he has anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.Jesus said this has been fulfilled ????? I know how hard it is to get help for DID. However the true Gospel that Paul preached in the power of the HOLY SPIRIT is the answer to all our problems . Without the Holy Spirit and God's word being outworked in a believers heart both in christian circles or non christian circles .There will be no lasting change with mental health problems. Or for anyone for that matter. I encourage you to find a true compassionate friend or true spirit filled compassionate pastor who has some understanding of the power of the true Gospel of Jesus Christ . JOHN 3v16-18. Develop a relationship of accountability , trust and intimacy. When I found them it changed everything. Any one who has any mental problems comes from childhood trauma/ abuse /stress in general just living life. / relationship problems ./ drug and alcohol problems./ Post traumatic stress/ then there are the following mental conditions we have . . Mood Disorders-such as depression or bipolar / anxiety disorders/ personality disorders- dissociative Identity Disorder -( SRA- Satanic Ritual Abuse. ) for the christian only Jesus can set you free. / psychotic disorders ( such as schizophrenia ) and eating disorders. It took me 56 years to get the help I really needed. Today I am well on my way to full recovery because of Jesus christ and what he did at the cross for me and all my alters . Praise his wonderful Name He is awesome GOD ,one to be loved and be loved by the creator Father GOD himself our ABBA DADDY who never rejects us put loving disciplines those he loves.

It seems that the Calvinists like John MacArthur and the charismatics like the 700 club are much harder on mental illness than other Christians. I don’t know why. But I wish I could find Christian therapy with people who know that if you can have a bad heart or cancer, you can also have neurons and electro chemical things that don’t work right either. I have borderline personality disorder, I’m totally blind, and I’m in a wheelchair; plus I live alone and I’m so gosh awful lonely I feel like I’m being crushed by it. I have two other friends who are also less isolated because they can see each other. My one friend is blind and she has cerebral palsy and she’s a Christian. My other friend has bipolar disorder and she’s blind and she’s a Christian. They get to see each other because they live in another town and they can’t come to see me because all three of us are disabled. But anyway it’s nice to hear some thing about people can be Christian and have mental illness real mental illness and it’s not demon oppression or anything. Because I am struggling with some things that I don’t want to talk about here but I wish I could talk about it to someone who is born again but also has a realistic understanding of brains not being Nuro normative etc.

Amazing talk, there's not many christians out there talking about the intersection of faith and mental health, I've been looking for these because recently I've opened up about my long standing struggles with depression. And actually it was my pastor who directed me to go to a psycologist and a psychiatrist. But also for several years I've never wanted to pursue those treatments because I've received all those comments about having more faith, and praying more and etc. As far as last week, another church counselor kind of told me I didn't have a traumatic event in my life this year (because last year I did well) that could possibly justify my depression, so basically I was depressed because I wanted to. So I think that it's really important to educate the church on how to deal with people that suffer a mental illness, and how to discern when something is purely spiritual, or a matter of attitude o if it really is something that person doesn't really have complete control over (like a chemical imbalance, a genetic predisposition, etc)

It can stem from hearing or hanging out with people who are negative and stressful to you. It can be the weather (lack of sunshine-vitamin D). It can be from birthing a child (post-partum). It can be from a tendency to listen to or look at somber music/TV. that stirs your mind that way (the mind has plasticity). It can stem from evil people who dabble into the occult-watch who your friends are! They can bless but by who's spirit!? Paul said in the scripture's to think of things that are of good repute, honorable, etc. Philippians 4: verse 8.

I love the fact Dr. Lee is a Christian and a Psychiatrist. I wish there were more like him. I’ve struggled to understand if I need to be on antidepressant medication and felt like I shouldn’t need it. I’ve taken them for 20 years but really want to get off them. One Psychiatrist thought I might need to be on them the rest of my life which I found very hard to accept. I am still trying to understand if I truly need the medication or if I could be stable without it. I pray the Lord leads me to an answer.

When it comes to friends and people in church sharing their hurts & fears - DO NOT GIVE ADVICE or preaching. Many times I have received advice and "encouragement", that only worsened it all. When one suffering desires advice, they will ask for it or go for professional (ex psychologist) help in privacy. The biggest need for the depressed, from friends, is only selfdisclosure. What you need to give is LISTENING EARS, EMPATHY AND SHOW UNDERSTANDING. Where appropriate - only give embracement, love and prayer if the person is willing. Advice is many times wrongly interpreted as critique and belittling. A depressed person think different....... Where I only shed my tears and struggles, and the friend only listened, I physically felt the weight go off my shoulders. Until today I never share my heart with the problem-solvers / advice-givers in my family......

This was a very much needed information on this subject. I’m glad that there are Christian Counselors who combine their profession, in this instance being a Psychiatrist and holding fast their faith in the Lord, practicing His Word. Hence, giving a balanced counsel to those who need it in a way that not only helps them, but glorifies the Lord also. I would like to share the following as a means of encouragement to anyone, but especially to those who are experiencing Mental Illness. “Jesus said… Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” (Matthew 22:37). “God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believers in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16). --- 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” “9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. (Romans 5:5-9) --- 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.” (1 John 4:10-14) -- “Behold, the Lamb of Gods who take the away, the sin of the World.” (John 1:9). -- “The human family are in trouble because of their transgression of the Father’s law. But God does not leave the sinner until He shows the (remedy) for sin. The only-begotten Son of God has died that we might live. The Lord has accepted this sacrifice in our behalf, as our substitute and surety, on the condition that we receive Christ and believe on Him. The sinner must come in faith to Christ, take hold of His merits, lay his sins upon the (Sin Bearer), and receive pardon…” ❤ “Through the cross we learn that our Heavenly Father loves us with an infinite and everlasting love, and draws us to Him with more than a mother’s yearning sympathy for a way ward child.” ❤ READ Matthew 27:24-54 daily. Meditate on God’s Love for you. -- “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.“ (3 John 2) -- SIN has brought great pain to God. Sadly we humans have all been affected by it being born in this fall world. However, the Lord has the remedy for every situation no matter how devastating it is. He Loves and cares deeply for our well being, all areas. So, not only is prayer and studying the Word of God necessary, but also good Bible- based balanced counseling, Diet, Lifestyle changes like for example see the Acronyms- NEW START (Nutrition/Exercise/Water - Sunshine/Temperance/Air/Rest/Trust in God. In addition, to good love and support from family, friends, brethren in the faith etc… Love in Christ. Great talk! I was wondering about the role of proper nutrition in keeping a healthy mental state. Very little emphasis is placed on it. Also, is there a connection with lifestyle choices being a factor in declining mental health...things like lack of exercise, no connection with nature, electronics, social media, etc.

I'm New born Christian, so I have absolutely no history with church life, and all this, I was very much studying every philosophy and science and New Age, but the Scripture and Christianity ( like many who were mindlessly raised in Catholic church I had absolute aversion to any religious institution), so I explain it for context. I was deep in psychology ( though not formally) and alternative forms of therapy. I seen ppl suffering different mental problems and heavy medicated and how it was pretty hopeless ( like covering gazing wound with bandate at best and some straight committed brutal suicide after longer time on antidepressants),,,it made me angry and curious and I digged deeper and found few opposite voices of established psychiatrists ( secular), who absolutely debunking myth of chemical imbalance in the brain, I wont go here through their fairly throughout reasoning, I'll leave one name ppl can check and hear for themselves, so that's one. Society is ( specially US) highly over medicated and in same time most disfuncional, unhappy and all .. Second thing I found out from secular psychiatrists ( I realise they're still in minority, cause they're going against status quo and big business) is also myth about inheritance ( gene expression) I'll leave it too, cause I'll have to right essey, and my only point is to make ppl aware of different perspective from non religious ppl, but very highly dedicated and risking unpopularity for speaking out, so I will just say that in some stage in research and science in few fields was saturated with gene related projects and in this hype of funding and specific direction - all was put on genes...if possible they would start blaming genes for generational poverty - and not simply environment and family not only financial situation, but bitten up mindset... anyways, what is very clear here from two examples out of three this speaker gave - the lady who went through brutal, abusive marriage and divorce and suffering from anxiety - really??? Who wouldn't??? What this person needs is lots of support from community ( physical security and friendly shoulder to cry on) plus obviously professional therapy after all this years of damage...the little girl who was abused by family member- that is something which boils blood....it shouldn't, but did happen and it's horrible for this frail, innocent child to endure... similar to adult lady, this horribly wrong child will need lots of support from environment ( so she wont feel threatened) and obviously professional therapy helping her understand it's not her fault ( all children unfortunately have this tendency, ) and how to cope with it ..those two examples are clear as day - that it's not some mysterious illness, but absolutely circumstantial, so I don't know why they're choose for proving need for clinical approach ( whatever it means) . I agree that diet ( so chemistry - vitamins, minerals etc - everyone has different organisms) plays huge role in our wellbeing - body and mind, and other lifestyle choices, like exercise, being in nature, relationships etc, medication is last resort and for minimum amount of time... it's so highly addictive and with such huge side effects - most of it should be out of market, if not huge money involved...and that's the tragic truth... For ppl really caring about this issues I recommend Peter Gotzche from Denmark and Gabor Mate, also on schizophrenia - Jerry Marzinsky

I went to a Christian counselor for an entire year. Got absolutely nowhere. He refused to address my childhood trauma. He had no answer to the mental and emotional pain that I was experiencing despite having everything I could have ever wanted now in my life. I had everything but all that trauma was still trapped in my body.. I had to leave Christianity and religion to finally experienced freedom and healing.. the only thing that counselor would emphasize with me was that I just didn't understand God's love for me. But that didn't get to the root of my pain. Now I know that I suffered from complex PTSD. I've made great strides in my own personal development completely without God. Christianity made me much more neurotic. I was a fervent believer for 16 years.

Praise the Lord you received the proper treatment and have healed substantially (it seems). As a believer I want to encourage you to work out salvation with fear and trembling and dig deep into what the Messiah really accomplished. Fundamentalism is a dangerous subset that easily confuses law and gospel. There is “much more” to life than self actualization and freedom from mental illness. That “much more” involves both the joy of living and the reality of death. Christ is truly the only escape from death and the only way to a genuine relationship with the true God of the universe. There is an eternity beyond this life.

I have the same problems as you. I just want to cry my eyes out. I spent most of my life terrified of God. Afraid because I couldn't be what he wanted me to be. I was taught that I best be good or I was going to split hell wide open. I was sexually abused by my randfathers, uncle, step-dad, dads friend. It started at 3. I had nowhere to turn so I turned inward. I loathe myself and see no value at all. I have been beaten, and told my whole life that God was angry with me inspite of the fact that I tried to make my parents proud of me. I am an adult now in my 40's and I am battling to understand the true radical grace of God.. I wish you would listen to Tullian Tchvidjian. His teachings have taught me that God loves me inspite of my failures because failures are all he's got. God loves me and he loves you just as we are not as we should be. Pray that the heaviness in my brain will lift and that my walls come down. Pray for me.

You blew it for me on the pharmaceutical question. While I respect pharmaceutical use for legitimate reasons, perhaps you are unaware of the long-term trade-offs, negative impact; and the excessive prescription abuse which has resulted in the creation of additional mental illness. I'm looking for a pharmaceutical minimalist resource, and your response to the question seemed to elevate pharmaceuticals over parents, thus giving the medical system authority over parents. That is VERY DANGEROUS.

"Wacko! Wacko!" Yes, mental illness does cause a lot of pain, suffering, torment and even torture. Many people have overcome mental illness to varying degrees. Some people have overcome severe mental illness entirely! So there is hope in holding on to truth. The truth is that only your Maker can perfectly cover for you Himself and remake you again from the inside out by the power of His true word as no one else can. The weight of the world does not have to be on your back since God has taken the weight of the sins of the world on Himself so we can be free from all the pain and suffering that we are unable to bear.

Sorry to hear not only that you are experiencing some form of Mental Illness, but struggling with getting back to the Lord. 😢. However, as a Christian myself, that have experienced depression at certain times in my life and in 2 instances where the Devil was clearly trying to get me to go out of existence. But as Scripture puts it, “the Lord was my stay.” I called on Him and he delivered me from the attacks of the Enemy. Praise God. JESUS is the ANSWER for any and every situation. Please READ the following Scriptures (Jeremiah 31:3; Isaiah 55:7, 8; John 3:16; Acts 3:19; 1 Peter 3:9; Hebrews 3:7,:8 and Revelation 3:20). These are just a few Words to start with. His Word is very healing to the soul. We need to seek the Lord always, trust in Him, pray to our Loving Father in heaven through faith - the Merits of the Shed Jesus Christ by the power of His Holy Spirit for relief. Prayers for all those experiencing illnesses, especially Mental Illness. ❤ As it relates to my walk with God, there have been time when I supposed being young in understanding, I leaned on my feelings of did God hear me, or having difficulty when my prayers did not get immediately answered or in the way I desired. However, as I continued praying- learning the importance of confessing any sin or offense against the Lord, while focusing on God’s Love in sending Jesus Christ to die for me, and our world, reading Scriptures and meditating on God’s Love, has been the means how the Lord has and continue to bring healing to deal with lives issues. Keep on seeking and putting your trust in the Lord. ***God Loves you *** and is waiting with open arms to receive you. In fact, He is doing so for every human being. This is reason He sent His Son - Jesus Christ. I will leave you with these encouraging Words that has blessed my soul. Praise God. “5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. I can tell you as a Christian I’ve taken meds for over 20 years. I believe there is nothing wrong in taking meds! I used to be a skeptic on the chemical imbalance theory but I do believe now that some do have it. Some develop it later in life and some have had it all their lives but there is NO shame in taking medication. I pray this comment gives you some peace if it’s something you’re still considering. Sometimes God’s answer to healing is medication.

Psychiatrists I've been involved with make that same diagnosis of the brain without testing the actual person but by your scientific assumption. What makes you so certain that this is the diagnosis without testing? My cousin was diagnosed scriptzophenia - he passed away last week with brain tumor! My son was diagnosed 4 months ago with scriptzophenia - the meds are just a plaster on the real issue then when ripped off - All hell breaks loose!! My son was doing amazing on the meds, If the plaster isn't ripped off (reliant on the meds) how much longer will they be drugged up - life!! Trusting in God's Word has been my only reliant - it's hard no doubt but my Son is worth my suffering.

Perhaps as far as Therapy and talking to God was the way God made it where we can find healing. It was meant to be a way of therapy and changing out minds by firing neurons and new pathways in the way they ought to. However, I do understand just like pain medicine is given for back ache medication can be given to correct unwell hormone levels and pathways in the way that can't be fixed by themselves like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, adhd, etc. Take it as a way of thanking God for allowing medicine to exist for healing.

As someone who has gone through some trauma, it is my firm belief that JUST AS we ALL have rebelled against the Lord since the beginning and being in gross sin and immorality… even though we sinned greatly against Him and this concept “But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬ ‭CSB‬‬ I can say that God wants us to forgive. Maybe not reconcile with everyone who abuses especially if the abuser is not a professing believer, God wants His children to love each other. Look at David, in some translations it suggests that David might’ve raped Bathsheba and not just seduce her and have consensual sex. Regardless he sinned greatly! And the repercussions from that and all that unraveled afterwards was so so bad before the Lord and even to his own brothers in the faith. Murder and lying. And yet he was still declared ‘a man after Gods own heart’. Wow, what a testimony from the Lord! I hope anyone reading this, understands what I am trying to convey and get out. Please let me know if I can clarify if it doesn’t make sense

Christian churches should not have a psychiatric wing they should have Christian deliverance to cast out these spirits causing mental illness I personally do Christian Deliverance and people are being set free and healed permanently without any drugs, I follow up with people for many years afterwards

That John MacArthur quote is sickening. 🤢 "Ye shall know them by their fruits." Compare the thorny fruits of this fellow to the healing gifts of Carl Jung, for example.

I never heard you say you were mentally I'll. So I need to move on because you will never know fully. Words sound good and can sound hopeful to people and I'm a Christian minister but you are wrong. I am bipolar and have studied obsessively everything you have except I suffer and you do not. That's what we do. We obsess over what is important at the time so our studying and view is what created every invention and all that we know on earth. It was almost all done by people like me. They call them mad scientist for a reason. These high paying jobs you educated yourself for is not very effective. Even the substance abuse community understand this simple concept of having recovery coaches involved in all aspect of addiction recovery. Psychology should do the same. Get people that have a passion unmatched because they also suffer from the same thing. Your head knowledge only gets you so far. But someone who has been there and done that is a much greater tool. BE PRO ACTIVE in getting more of these folk trained and keep your day job at its location.
