There are thousands of mental health apps out there claiming to do everything from easing insomnia to treating PTSD symptoms, but are those really effective?

I'm a mental health support worker; my experience is that these apps and online CBT can be a useful "stepping stone." for people who have difficulty with face to face interaction. In an ideal world this wouldn't be necessary but i'm seeing more and more people who only feel comfortable with digital interaction, not just the younger generation either.

watson483 i want to point out, as a bipolar patient (who doesn’t drink!!) alcohol works on the same part of the brain as benzodiazepines. Benzos are prescribed to patients with bipolar to quell manic insomnia and other issues tied to bipolar disorder. I would like to think the “take a shot” advice was well intentioned and not just “f it, just drink it away like the rest of us” kind of thing. But god. It’s BAD advice!

I love seeing my therapist over video call (one that I started seeing in person and found through traditional channels) but I’m extremely skeptical that a phone call or a text would work nearly as well. I need to see her move and talk and hear her words like I would in an office. Video chat can provide that, but I doubt that other forms can.

I agree. Seeing someone's expressions and subtle reactions to things is really important. It's also way easier to lie/bend the truth in text communication.

Researching supported self management mental health apps or web-based interventions is my dream. With how many people are at risk of developing mental disorders, and how current mental health services struggle to keep up with demand, apps and online interventions have huge potential to help.

Me: This mental health app is evidence based, has good science, was developed by a reputable organization, and doesn't have a lot of unnecessary features. Everyone else: BUT THIS OTHER ONE LOOKS SO MUCH BETTER!!!
@ritme7769
@ritme7769 4 жыл бұрын
This is a big problem in the healthcare sector in general. It may look slick to an executive, but to a trained eye, it's cluttered or burdensome. When developing RITME, the focus on keeping the features to a minimum was always front and center. We do one thing and one thing only; get people within arm's reach of their next task when they need the extra push. Our hope is to eventually create an API that allows more complex interactions, but even then, it stays at the basics.

@@johnopalko5223 My personal bugbear is that most healthcare apps that receive funding suffer from a lot of feature bloat, but were funded on the basis of providing information statically. That can sometimes work, but those apps don't need that much funding. RITME cost tens of thousands of dollars to develop because we develop the features. We luckily got funding for that, but only a minimal amount.

Looks do matter though. Color emotion theory is very much a factor. Poor graphic design/layout/colors on apps/websites not only make them difficult to use but also stressful. An app to help with anxiety that has lots of animated text and bright colors and is overcomplicated isn't exactly going to help.

I think it's great that people can seek help online. Im not suffering from mental health issues now, but I know for sure if I could not seek help anonymously if I need it, I would just never seek it at all. The risk of getting locked up in a mental hospital and lose all personal freedom is just way too serious to take. I could have any mental or physical illness in the world and I still wouldnt seek treatment if that was the consequenses. I cant be the only one But then again, if someone would rather seek treatment in person thats also up to them. And maybe the right decicion for some

Your all missing the point of privacy.Manufactures of these apps need to encrypt them against data gathering which can be more harmful than what the patient is actually being treated for in the first instance.Otherwise they should be portable battery operated apps that don't require internet involvement.

They only "destroy" your brain if you misuse or overuse it. You can have perfectly good mental health and intelligence despite using computers/cellphones on a daily basis. But if you dont get any breaks at all apart from sleeping I see why it would damage your mental health
@Acetyl53
@Acetyl53 4 жыл бұрын
@@zakosist I agree, overall. But I'm talking in hard physical terms, not just in psychosocial degradation, addiction, laziness, conditioning and so on. There is a direct physical action of its emissions, on the brain. Not speculation, based on hard data, known for the last 70 years. Although just from the social etc aspect, I don't think people can handle it there either. Eventually most will end up carrying their brains in their pocket. If you want more information on that let me know. Whenever I put links to pu bm ed youtube hides my post, puts it in the channel's spam review section or whatever they do with it, never to become visible. So It takes a degree of trial and error for formatting.

RITME is an adaptation of the 'implementation-intention' intervention that's a common technique in CBT, aimed at enhancing executive functioning outcomes. That is; turning a change of thoughts into a change of activity. Starting next January, a 4 year trial will start at the University of Twente to test the 'Design Your Life' method in customizing mental health applications and technology to the needs to individual papers. RITME was developed by Alderick van Klaveren, an autistic entrepeneur who struggled with executive dysfunction. If you have trouble acting on your intentions, perhaps RITME or one of our competitors is right for you! For more information, comment below or visit our website RITME.codes!
