This is a fantastic quote from the book "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl. (No offense to Nietzsche, but if someone liked the quote and wanted to know the origins of the body of work it came from, they can now read it in full. And it's an incredible book, and Logotherapy is amazing, so I hope anyone looking for more to life might pick it up).

Dr. K, I can:t thank you enough for your work. I am of the camp, rich in sour karma. My parents thought I was deft until 4 because I was neglecting them in return, all but one high-school friend self deleted, I don't let myself date anymore, and I'm rattled with a rotating cast of addictions. Though ever since I started listening to you while I work, and followed your advice, I've started adding patterns that I enjoy and are positive in my life. I've rebuild my workaholic lifestyle and am focusing on sharing a better version of what I enjoy, and that is teaching gardening classes, instead of trying to do the growing of the food myself to try achieving validation of giving food security to a parent or making them live longer with food quality. I feel I can grow way more food by enabling people to do it themselves, and ot excites me, rather than work myself to death, burning out every season. Thank you! Success to your family

Great lecture as always. You do an outstanding job connecting it with something tangible/practical we can do right now. Love the last lesson you gave on going to the "Careers" page of some company that offers an interesting position and inspecting the qualifications--I think it's important we have a clear picture of what we're doing and where we're going, in order to not hate school and get good grades.

The life stages piece fascinated me. Although I'm a very late bloomer in terms of establishing a family, I do otherwise find myself in late Householder/early Transition stage. (And at 31, I'd say I'm a bit precocious in this regard!) I have a general sense of the attributes my dharma has (leadership, teaching, technology, etc) but as of yet, I've not had any problems present themselves that I could act on as my dharma.

On the idea of one’s focus on studying as duty to save a future person’s life, this is an extrinsic motivation. Make sure not to have too much stress from this. The reason is that it may cause one to be more inefficient, or worse, to miss opportunities to improve the system in a more fundamental way. For example, preventing a problem from happening in the first place, I.e. dealing with the problem more upstream, vs. managing the problem that happens. It may be better to focus on intrinsic motivation. This can open one up more to other possible ways to solve the problem, due to not being as stressed out when things don’t go smoothly.

My university actually taught me the opposite. At first, I was like Dr. K. Establish myself then help people. Then, the Jesuits encouraged us to live a life of service, and we can actually make a living while doing so. We can also help now, not just in the future. And well, I wasn't really living a life of service and following their advice. lmao. Although I still wanted to help people as a side gig. I think I'll just go back to my original thought. Establish myself then help people.

Do you think meditation can be swaped into other activities ? Like for example improvising on instrument ? You kinda express your feelings, you forget about the world around and you feel happy after playing sick improv and getting better at it. It’s my way of chilling and making my mind clear and staying positive, but I wanna know what do you think about it.

About finding your dream job, isn't it quite contradicting with what Dr. K said before that making your job your goals wouldn't push your best foot forward? Like you're checking the boxes of qualifications to get into the job, but once you're there and got the job, there's nothing else to push you forward? It's so similar to my situation right now where I was once so motivated to get this job that I want, but now that I'm here, I feel lost and not sure of what's the next thing for me

Don’t really understand how karma works
@Conzetle
@Conzetle 4 жыл бұрын
Gridrek Gridrek Most know karma to be something like, “every action has a reaction”. Or something like that. If you do something bad, it will come to bite you later on. Vice versa. This is the only take away western culture has taken it seems. Karma is much deeper than just this. I can sum it up and you may get a better understanding overall (if you want the full details of it, I recommend looking up “karma yoga”, or “karma Vedanta”). Every action has a consequence. Cause and effect is the best way to describe it. Everything subscribes to it and will always. All thought, emotion, sense, knowledge that you experience has a reason for being there. In this sense, there is no free will. If I know every circumstance, every atom of your being, everything you’ve gone through, your thought process, I can determine your action. This applies to the world too, not just you, which is why we have science. Karma is applied in this way in two major ways. One is the short term, if I hit a table it will make a sound. The other is the long term. If I disclose a secret to someone, that will have an effect later on. Good karma and bad karma is determined to be the latter. It has an effect that persists to manifest later on. The implications of good and bad karma is too vast to describe in honest effort in a comment. (You would have to look up what I suggested) But I can explain to you why karma is important. It is important in duty. Not because of what you can get out of it, but because of the complete opposite. Because of karma, we try to be the owners of our destiny. We try so hard to have good grades, a good job, this and that. We try so hard to have good results and we try to look for any way to obtain it. We try to control so many things. Karma does indeed indicate that everything has a reason, but you can not know every reason. You can not know what the actions of another will be, you cannot know what the actions of the world will be. In this sense, it is said to rely on God. Since you truly have no control over the results of your work, you have no reason to be attached to them. You have no reason to want to obtain a good or bad result. This can be confusing to some. And if you take a Nihilist approach (nothing matters), can really ruin your work ethic. So how is this good for duty? If you realize that you truly have no control over your results, then that is truly freedom. A good grade will not affect you, neither will a bad grade. A successful career will not affect you, neither will a terrible one. What happens is not that you’ll become lazy, but instead you will see that you have the freedom to work. Not because you need a result, but because you are no longer attached to the result. Anytime you work, it will be because you have the freedom to do so. This is called karma yoga. It’s implications are vast as well, but I will do my best to illustrate the main one. If you have the freedom to do anything, what will you do? Get money? No because then you would still be attached to the results of your work. Would you work to be happy? No, you wouldn’t. Would you do anything for yourself? No, you would not. You have no reason to. Would you work for others? You may argue that you wouldn’t, but it truly is the only thing that you would work for. The sake of the world. Because you are not attached to your works results, you have no reason to pursue work. However, this is truly freedom. There is another part to this, which is why it may seem confusing or incomplete. That is the self. I recommend also looking this up in Vedanta. This is the only reason to work if you are unattached.
