Love and hate are opposites. Apathy is a neutral feeling. Whereas, you can occasionally get away with apathy, most things in life need a feeling one way or the other, and especially something as emotional as a relationship. Apathy is emotional withdrawl from a situation. I understand why one might express it to protect oneself from more pain. But if it continues, you lose the other person in the relationship, because everybody needs interaction and emotional investment

@@craighenry9512 Oh, Craig... How I envy you. Love and hate are very close cousins. You have to really love to hate. See Eminem's song Kim. If he never loved her, he would NOT be able to boil into the rage he expresses in that one. The passion is the same with both cousins. It's just your goals that shift. And even that's not completely true. You want them to feel what you're feeling. You want them to experience what you're experiencing. In both cases. You crave to show them on a level both emotional and physical how they make you feel. Express those urges that are dying to get out. And changing one into the other, love into hate, is as simple as one act of betrayal. One step across that thin line that separates them. Aparhy is really a much better fit. It is the lack of caring. The lack of interest. The absolute lack of Fs to give. You could not care less. And that is the opposite of both love and hate, where you couldn't care more in both cases.

Honest truth. I got to know, hang out with Slipknot since first seeing and meeting them in ‘99 at Ozzfest. Corey Taylor has been through so much in his life. Even survived suicide before, became sober and helps fans and people no matter what his fame is. There music and even conversations we’ve had has helped me so much towards my own struggles of mental health and past suicide attempts. If it wasn’t for the fact that I met Corey Taylor, read his books, know he was also a survivor of many kinds of abuse in his childhood, I would not had been able to find a comfort to where I was able to let people know I am survivor of sexual, physical, verbal, emotional abuse from my own childhood all these years later. Sometimes, our most hurts can be used to help others. Thanks for what you do, Amanda. I just found this video last week as a suggested video from the Slipknot videos I watch.

I’ve watched several reactions/responses to Snuff and this is by far the most intelligent and on point commentary I have heard. You put into words perfectly why I am so taken over by this song. There’s nothing more insulting than when someone says “you’ll get over her/him/it” or “just don’t think about them”. It’s hard to speak about things that hurt that you’re passionate about when you know nobody cares. Some wounds aren’t meant to heal. Some we don’t want to heal.

Some wounds we shouldn't allow to heal. Some we should keep revisiting and reminding ourselves of. Ripping off the scabs and making sure to scar up there. To be prepared. To remember. To never be hurt like that again. Some wounds are left by things we survived by the skin of our teeth. Things we would NOT survive again. Things we need to see the early warning signs of, so we don't make the same mistake again and notice when it's already too late to back down.

"some wounds are not meant to heal" That sentiment is something I feel so deeply I had it tattooed on me. So many people truly do not understand what that statement means and why it's so important. I find it hard to explain to people, so it's always nice to come across anyone who understands this. This song is interpreted in COUNTLESS ways by so many people, which just proves how extraordinary this song is. Its really rare to find a song that is so effective as this one.

I don't post often, in fact, this may be my first time posting on your channel, but for one who has been through a marriage where I was betrayed by my partner and then dealing with the mental and emotional anguish, the depression from that loss, this song hits home in the feels for me. It's cathartic. I've probably listened to "Snuff" hundreds of times, and it still reaches down into my soul and hits me the same every time. I tried to deal with the pain and loss of that relationship by drowning it and self-medicating with alcohol. I probably was already dealing with depression before the failed marriage from a traumatic experience I had as a child, but either didn't realize it or want to admit it. The divorce was enough of a catalyst to push me into the pit where I couldn't hide it. Music was one of the things that helped pull me out of the bottle, and it is people like Corey Taylor sharing their own struggles and pain through that medium, especially with songs like "Snuff," where you realize you aren't alone in feeling the way you do that is a big reason why. While the studio version of the song and video is good, I prefer the stripped-down, acoustic version with just Corey Taylor, his 6-string, and the crowd. This song has always been a difficult one for Taylor to perform live, to get through, and you can really see the emotion come through when he sings it. I highly recommend that you or anyone that watches your reaction take the opportunity to watch it if they haven't yet. Nice review, the song is to a person in Corey's life that he fell in love with while they helped him through a dark time in his life, and the struggles of letting go because they didn't return the love (I can't destroy what isn't there) due to their own darkness (my heart is just to dark to care). Being suicidal myself, this song really strikes deep and cold into my own self-conscious. "My heart is just to dark to care." I can relate with that so much, I've had it at times, where I would literally shout at people not at what they said, but by how something inside myself clicked with one of their actions. I'm a Self-harm survivor as well, I've been cutting myself ever since my grandfather died, and that's the only way I can express my pain physically. Life has been dragging me under, and I've written lyrics as a form to ratify myself, and to express my emotion outside of hurting myself. Truly, the best music in my opinion comes from heart-ache, because everyone can actually relate, apart from songs that sing about being rich/drunk/happy. Those songs are all lies, that's the main reason I'm a metal guy, the music actually understand you.

I'd imagine the hardest part is that one partner who understands it and can be mentally resilient as you described, is only human and will have days where they react and they will have to carry a large weight on their shoulders. You'd need friends and family to 'get it' and support too and that's unfortunately rare to find people that mature. Both parties in the relationship would need a support team. Thanks for sharing.

The live accoustic version by Corey is amazing - and has more emotion as it was recorded after his good friend in the band (Paul Gray) had died Its not really a representation of Slipknot as a band - most of it is super aggressive hardcore metal (but ace at the same time) but deals with a lot of issues around depression, mental health, alcohol and drug addiction and more. This song is beautiful.

My two favorite lyrics are “If I can change, I hope I’ll never know” and “I only wish you weren’t my friend, then I could hurt you in the end” I was and still am those lyrics. I’m working on it so damn much and I have a partner that showed me the biggest show of love. She discovered something I was doing that hurt her to her core. We barely talked for almost an entire week. In my head, I’m creating all these scenarios in my head because I know she’s gonna leave. We finally talked about what I did, waiting for the words, but instead of leaving, she tells me that she knows that this is not who I am. She looked me in my eyes and told me she would be with me through this journey of healing I’m going on. For years, I knew I needed to change, but no one else did. I kept secrets from everyone. My therapist actually told me I create and bubble of secrets to protect myself. She pierced that bubble and still chose me. I genuinely believe I still wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her.

This song was written about a female corey loved who didn’t love him back, later to be a tribute song to Paul gray the bassist of slipknot who died a couple days after this song was released (now ex drummer joey as well has passed) this song is barely ever sung bc corey has a hard time performing it.

I've been through a lot thanks to my mental health, even with help and meds, it's still a struggle. I do DBT, a therapy for BPD and it works great but I myself am flawed so it's still a struggle, years after trying to work on it. You nailed everything on the head with relationships and validation. When I got divorced in 2018, I played this song over 300 times (thanks Spotify for telling me THAT at the end of the year). I was in so much pain, and so much of this song resonated with me then. "So break yourself against my stones, and spit your pity in my soul. You never needed any help, you sold me out to save yourself." A woman that I loved very much threw my love for her right back in my face. I was somewhat of a rockstar and I went of the deep end. I ended up a heroin addict. I have been sober since Feb 9, 2017. I've been watching a wide variety of music reactions lately and I was genuinely surprised when you spoke so candidly about your BPD. My fiance was raised in a broken home and her mother and likely more than one of her siblings is textbook BPD and it's shocking and frankly terrifying how dramatically their whims can affect our entire family from day to day. You seem very well adjusted and it gives me hope for them that they too can some day learn to find peace and harmony in their own lives. Well, not my mother in law, because she's also a sadistic psychopath so...

BPD absolutely can be managed and those living with it can have happy and fulfilling lives and relationships. They have to be aware of the disorder and actively working on emotional regulation and family members have to be educated about the disorder and supportive. I plan to create more content about living with BPD so stay tuned!😊

@@MentalAmanda The mother who is the chaotic center is fortunately mostly out of the picture but as far as I know she hasn't been officially diagnosed with anything. She has done prison time though and frankly should do much more. The girls were diagnosed early on but are still in their 20s and seem to use their conditions as an excuse for erratic behavior rather than actually trying to manage or understand their issues and the family members who still have relationships with them generally seem to do the same. "Oh, so and so did something crazy? Well yeah she has X and Y and used to be on Z meds." "Oh yeah? Is she still in therapy? On meds?" "Oh no she's done with all that. That's just how they are." "Ok cool thanks call me when the house is on fire... again..."

Bless You, your efforts, and willingness to share, I was with someone with Borderline Personally Disorder. The fear of abandonment, the pushing away, the "I hate you.... Please don't leave me." Was too much and I did what I thought she wanted.... I left. I had NO CLUE what I was dealing with, wish I'd had known at the the time. Mental pain is as bad, no, worse, than physical pain. Keep up your good work.

Thanks for reviewing this one. It's such a strong, emotional song for a lot of people. It hits me every time, but you opened my mind to hearing it from the opposite perspective. I, like quite a few commenters, just had a marriage fall apart, but your comments have really opened my eyes to what happened....maybe she didn't quit on me, maybe I quit on her? I teared up to your reaction, as I always do when I listen to snuff, I won’t lie. you nailed most of my thoughts and interpretation of the song. You said something that will make me think for a while, “you need to be two wholes and not two halves, like you need someone else to function”…I was like…f***…the way I see the video it’s just somebody tormented by the end of a story that gets tangled so much in a bargaining-remembrance-rejection loop that he starts to…yeah, identify as the other half too, cause as you said…he wasn’t able to be a whole by himself. I hate when people think this video is weird. From the moment right before the music slows down, I believe to be the most beautiful song/video representation ever made. I loved it when you said we can save a lot of heartache if people could say I love you and I know your hurting I wish people I cherish dearly could see when I'm in pain but I'm trying to stop put up my walls when I'm suffering I pushed away a girl I loved when I was in the middle of a transition from high school to the real world I was missing all my former teachers that had a positive effect on me and I was dealing with the loneliness that lead to depression since I did virtual school my senior year I was also dealing with some friends of mine who took their lives that weighed heavily. I got the help i needed. Slipknots song snuff gives me those memories of the hurt I've endured and given out as my defense mechanism.

I don't know why, but for some reason I've always avoided your reaction videos, without ever having seen one. I think it may be the "suicide survivor reacts" titles, I don't know. At any rate, I think part of me was refusing to allow this to happen in my head. For another unknown reason, this morning I saw this in my feed and decided to click on it while doing paperwork. I got no paperwork done. In fact, I spent most of the video with thick tears rolling down my cheeks aa I nodded along to your analysis of the song's various meanings. Thank you.
