And you have seen him act that way a few times in different circumstances. Wow, it sucks to see it laid all out like that. We brought you in to make this company better. So we're gonna step back and let you do that." And it could've all blown over by now. @janetjane4861 Жыл бұрын
The waterblock debacle is worse than you mentioned here: Linus COULDN'T be bothered to test it according to company instructions and used mismatched card, the waterblock obviously failed, then Linus completely trashed it and called it bad product and then defended this opinion by implying the company is bad for even trying to make clearly enthusiast grade expensive edge-case hardware for those who want it, because "it's bad for consumers". And then he sold it off instead of returning it. Also, Mister 100 Million dollars claimed that spending 200-500 bucks to test it properly is a waste.
@peckservers Жыл бұрын
He didn't ever trash on it, and in the video there was mention that the reason it didn't work is because they used the wrong card. They looked at it from an objective perspective and even didn't use their test results as a contributor to their conclusion. Their take away was that it was a very good product and well built, it was for niche tiny form factor builds, but it was a lot of money and for most people it wouldn't have been worth it. Even if it was the correct gpu, he would have had the same take away that $800 is a metric crap ton of money for a cooler. He was wrong for not retesting the gpu and attributing that to it "costing $500" of employee pay, but at the end of the day this isn't driven by malice, or an attempt to ruin billlet labs, it was just an overview of him building with the product, setting it up, and running a test on it. If it was a performance review there would've been actual data collected and they would've actually used the right card. I think you've fallen into the echo chamber that Steves video has created and like a lot of others are taking little tiny details and making them the end of the world.
@janetjane4861 Жыл бұрын
@@peckservers Sure, fair point on how that review went. But I consider how they handled the prototype afterwards pretty close to the "end of the world" bit.

@@peckservers they still sold the prototype at auction without permission... they didn't even reach the other company about it until Steve's video... that in itself is damning for me. I couldn't care less for their reviews anyway, i will look at hard data, look at price and decide for myself if it's good enough, the moment they are not doing proper testing any value of that information is lost for me
@peckservers Жыл бұрын
@@janetjane4861 my original reply to this is magically gone so here's a retake of it. I have to disagree on your opinion on the auction part too. What happened is that there is a department responsible for communicating with companies such as Billet labs, and the agreement was that it was to be sent back. Then an employee from another department who had no idea of this arrangement selected it as one of the items to by put in the auction. After realizing this mistake the employee immediately tried to reach out to Billet to make them whole, because at the end of the day it would be stupid of them to sell it to try to make money intentionally going against billets wish. it was purely an accident. They explained this in a recent video, and it is completely understandable how it happened.
@peckservers Жыл бұрын
@@imblackmagic1209 They went over this in their latest video, what happened is that due to non communication between departments, there was plans to send the block back, but Colton didn't know of that when he was picking things for the auction. A completely understandable mistake. they actually attempted to reach out before any of the controversy had ever been conceived under the light. That communication didn't make it through however, so when Steve reached out, billet didn't have any record of an attempt to reach out. Taking Steve at face value would paint Linus as an evil greedy bastard. But understanding the whole context of the situation just makes it look like a massive L error. you said it yourself that the data from their review doesn't matter in your eyes, so why are you contradicting by saying that if they don't provide good data then it suddenly does matter. In the original review they made it pretty obvious that the product was good and they just tested it wrong. So basically they said this test doesn't even matter. At that point why are we still focused on it. If they were clear about that why is there a fixation point on it still being wrong. It's just moot, because that wasn't the point of the video, just like the point of their overpowered server videos aren't to get exact numbers on their performance, its just more of a "this is cool" thing. Please enlighten me on why something like that is worth destroying his company over, especially when it comes to the sheer amount of factually accurate content that exists from his company. It, just like the incorrect gpu graph is such a minor itty mistake in a large pool of overall data, 99.9% of which is completely accurate that calling him a sham over it is unfair at best.

Just to add - the Billet waterblock was given to Linus attached to the graphics card it was designed for. LMG willfully removed the waterblock from this GPU, put it on a 4090 which it then did not fit as well due to design tolerances, and then ran the review - and then auctioned it. Last I heard, Billet had not recieved their graphics card back and there was no mention of this as most of the focus was on their waterblock. Imagine if I took the prototype heatsink made by two people off a Ryzen 5 series processor and put it onto an i7-13900k, then complained about the performance, auctioned it off to potentially a competitor, and then only really card about getting it back and returning it (just the waterblock, not the cpu it came with) after the company complained. Oh, and all this after having the prototype for 9 weeks before even bothering to review it - that's basically what LMG did to this two person startup company. He should know better and have more empathy.

@peckservers Жыл бұрын
There is misinformation in this take too, yes they did do their testing improperly and used the wrong gpu. that is an obvious mistake, and they are human. To attribute it to malice is where your take kind of falls apart. Doing what they did (considering that Billet said it potentially works on both 3090 and 4090) is like putting a cooler meant for an i9 13900k on an i9 11900k, it theoretically could work so that's what they tried it with. Then when it didn't work they said in the video its cause its the wrong gpu, and didn't base their conclusion on the test result. You obviously didn't give a look into any of the videos released on the topic by Linus about all of the community concerns. There is a very logical and reasonable explanation as to how the block got auctioned off in the first place. That would be asking a lot of his community to do some research on their clams though. They immediately reached out even before Steve's video had even come into existence and tried to do everything in their power to make it right. This shows that they were aware of their mistake and wanted to make it right even before any of the backlash happened. It wasn't about making money from it at the auction, which would be attributing their actions to malice. It was that it was selected by Colton to put on the auction, and Colton didn't know what it had to go back. which is not only understandable, but also is based on actual facts. You basically are just regurgitating what other people have speculated and echo chambered around like a big game of telephone and its a damaging behavior. You can't hate someone because of hearsay, unless you do some proper research on them first.

I don't understand how you can guys can "read emotions" so well but cant bothered to look at the context. It is so easy to quit if you don't like your boss, but they all love the work they do. Its a sad take from you guys. I like the point @BooleanDev Brings up in saying that they are most likely camera shy. When you walk into your bosses office at any job you are most likely not going to be willy nilly around them, you are going to be incredibly professional. Now imagine there's a camera with millions of people watching you through that, its stressful as hell.
@peckservers Жыл бұрын
@RAM_845 Yeah that's a fair take, I agree. Most of the things Linus says come from a good place in his heart, but from a PR sense don't work well. Luke (usually listening as Linus talks) will be able to pick up on these where as Linus it talking and cant really analyze the effect of what he is saying as well, whether good or bad. When I talk to co workers they do the same thing, and when they talk I do as well. Its part of expressing emotion when communicating. It still shouldn't be attributed to malice like people are trying to do. I particularly love wan show because it allows Linus to talk openly and I am able to see the true meaning of what he says, but at the same time, its that characteristic of wan show that has made it a PR nightmare. Some people take things so at face value that it becomes hard to talk at all.

You failed to mention that not only did he auction off the water block that he was supposed to give back, he also used the wrong video card with it (4090 instead of 3090) because "he didn't have the proper one on hand at the time", and then rated it badly. 2. Linus also took a hit last year (and kind of the start of the whole GamersNexus beef) over the backpack "Trust Me Bro (TM)" warranty. He seems to assume because he sees himself as a Good Guy, therefore everybody else should give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he'll do right by them. I know all the details aren't public, but it does kind of paint a picture after Maddison Reeves' allegations, and then another former employee Collin corroborated part of her story, that LMG has work culture issues. Heck, the leaked audio of an employee meeting from 2022 literally has another "trust me bro" comment from Linus.
@Alias_Anybody Жыл бұрын

I think the issue Linus has is that he takes an attack on his channel too personally and he lashed out as a result. Most of these issues seem to stem from expanding so quickly that they’ve barely transitioned from small company mentality to a more corporate structure. Ironically for a tech company, it appears that they just use a few writers for their server / PC management work. Perhaps they should have had a systems administrator in years ago. Hence why they keep making huge changes to their server. I suspect they don’t get bother with the typical HR / cyber security training that every other corporate company demands of their staff. It’s easy to skip on that when your company is a total 6 tech bros, not so when it’s suddenly over 100 with far more diversity than before. Perhaps this will prove to be the wake up call required to implement a more ethical and sustainable approach.

Steve is goddamn stubborn about doing the right thing, and that's good. The man really helps consumers and hw manufacturers as well, and he has a way smaller budget and people to work with than LMG.

Also easily more knowledgeable about the stuff he covers. Tons of mistakes from LTT in his video were just straight embarrassing.

Man, woah. Half a million. I can't wrap my head around this. Congratulations man! You deserve it. I hope LTT will improve, less videos but longer and higher quality is the side I'm basically choosing always when it comes to reviews or tech videos.

I used to watch specifically for Linus and him as a character and the comedy. Yes, him stepping away is the most logical solution, but honestly it will still result in the brand dying, just a little more slowly. The only one who had potential to replace him was Anthony, as people loved his character, but he recently came out as transgender (now Emily), so I don't think that would work out with the viewers. The rest of employees are as ordinary as it gets.

for anyone wondering how this all came to be It all started way further and it was when good ol Linus said live on Wan show when people asked why his expensive LTT bag didn't come with a warranty and he said by his own words that because it was not what was best for his family and his company GN did a video piece about that as well and called him out which also blew up Hardware Unboxed posted on twitter that they completely agree with GN's findings thus why LTT also have beef with them and it's been brewing for months now this is the reason why they cited both channels on that Lab tour which Linus doubled down on in another WAN show episode he didn't name them but every one knew who he was referring to because he is still so butt hurt about the previous call out.

I worked for a tech company with an owner with a very similar personality as Linus. I 100% believe that for all but the 1% public visible employees it is a hell hole to work for. Especially a social media manager position like the woman making accusations. It is so typical for someone like Linus who has lived, eat and breathed his business for a decade to have unreasonable expectations for employees.

I doubt her accusations are real.
@vincentvega3093 Жыл бұрын
@@ashishpatel350hypothetically lets say they are. Wouldn't accusing Linus feel impossible to what was basically a child in terms of work experience? Any person at LMG doing this would shock me, but the head honcho. Not saying he did, because prooven innocent until alleged to be guilty. If nobody gets fired, rather somebody resigns, thats the point were suits will have to clean up.

@@vincentvega3093 fired? Of these allegations were real she would be able to sue the company and rake in money. Yet she's just accusing someone right at the same time gamers Nexus dropped his video. I call bs she wants attention not to mention she was probably made they didn't use her pronouns

Terran (ceo) is having external investigation about the accusations. Would expect the perpetrators to be fired. And yes, if true, she should sue.
@ashishpatel350 Жыл бұрын
@@vincentvega3093 yes he is it's paid for by Linus so it makes me believe she doesn't have any proof of the things she says happen. There are multiple cameras in the place I bet Linus couldn't even find anything on those hence the reason he didn't fire him.
